New Student Seminar: Writing a Career Research Paper
Requirements:
1. Students will use the following career websites located on the Larson Library website for
writing this research paper:
● Students--College & Career
● BigFuture by the College Board--career search
● O*Net OnLine
● Bureau of Labor Statistics
● Other sources must first be approved by Mrs. McBrine or Mrs. Porter
2. Paper format: MLA
● See Larson Library website
○ Students--Research Papers
○ Students--Research Papers--Handouts & Research Tips
● Students will use proper format including in-text citations, which will align with a works
cited page for writing this research paper. Plagiarism is a serious offense, please be aware
of the consequences in the student handbook.
● This paper will be 2-4 pages in length, which includes a cover page and a works cited page.
3. Students are required to use a minimum of two sources.
4. All documents will be shared with Mrs. McBrine through Google Documents and placed in
the class’s shared folder.
5. Students are required to use EasyBib for creating the works cited page, outline, and note
cards.

Periodically, students will be given workdays during class and/or library time to work on this
career research paper; however, it is the expectation that a good portion of this work will be
completed outside of class.
Day 1: Tuesday, October 7 (Library)
● Mrs. Porter will introduce the three websites that will be used for this research paper:
BigFutures, O*NET, & Bureau of Labor Statistics, which are all accessible on the Larson
Library website under College & Career.
● Students will choose a career of their choice from websites and print information relating
to their topics using “Print Friendly.”
● Topic & printing will be due at the end of the period and must be approved by Mrs.
McBrine.
● Mrs. Porter will review Plagiarism with the students.
● WHATEVER IS NOT DONE DURING THIS PERIOD WILL BE ASSIGNED AS
HOMEWORK AND WILL BE DUE TOMORROW--OCT 8.
Day 2: Wednesday, October 8 (Library)

● Today students will focus on learning how to use EasyBib Citation Maker. Mrs. Porter will
demonstrate how to create citations using EasyBib. She will also demonstrate how to export
the bibliography (works cited) to Google Docs & place a document into Mrs. McBrine’s class
folder.

● Today students will also learn how to use the Outline feature located within the Notebook
of EasyBib. See library website for follow-up on how to use this feature of EasyBib:

● Career Research Paper Outline
○ The outline located on the below will be used as a rough guide to get you started on
your research paper. This outline must be inputted using the outline feature of
EasyBib which is located in the Notebook.

● Outlines and Rough Work Cited page must be shared with Mrs. McBrine through Google
Docs in their class folder by the end of the period today.
Day 4: Friday, Oct. 10 (Library)
● Today Mrs. Porter will demonstrate how to create online notecards using the Notebook
feature of EasyBib. Students are required to complete a minimum of 10 notecards for the
paper. The first 5 notecards are due Wed., October 15. Students will not be allowed to
start writing their papers until Mrs. McBrine receives and approves of the following:
rough outline, 10 notecards, and a rough bibliography (works cited).
Day 5: Thursday, Oct. 16 (Library)
● The format of this paper will be MLA.
● Mrs. Porter will again review Plagiarism with the students.
● Mrs. Porter will demonstrate to students how to set up the first page of their documents
using MLA format.
● Mrs. Porter will demonstrate to students how to export their bibliographies (works cited)
from EasyBib to Google Documents.
● Mrs. McBrine will continue follow up with the research paper process in the classroom.
● Students may also seek out Mrs. Porter during study halls for additional assistance relating
to this paper.
