This document summarizes the objectives and accomplishments of the WAAPP-Nigeria-NIHORT AROC Project from January to July 2013. The project's objectives were to encourage adoption of improved agricultural technologies, enhance economic empowerment of farmers, stimulate youth interest in agriculture, and ensure food security. Approved technologies included improved maize, cassava, watermelon, and vegetable varieties. Key accomplishments included forming economic groups of over 180 members, distributing inputs, demonstrating improved production packages which saw 50-70% adoption rates, and sensitization workshops. Outstanding activities included installing cassava processing equipment and expanding the project to new states.

2. Objectives
• To encourage large scale adoption of improved
agricultural technologies among value chain actors
• To enhance economic empowerment of resource poor
farmers
• To stimulate interest of youth in agriculture
• To create job opportunities for youths and women
• To enhance and ensure food and nutritional security
3. Approved technologies
•
Maize (QPM): Improved varieties (ILE 1-OB and ART 98SW6-OB)
and improved packages of recommendations along the value chain

Cassava: Improved variety (TMS 419) and improved packages of
recommendations along the value chain
•
Water melon (Sugar baby and Kaolack) and improved packages of
recommendations along the value chain
•
Vegetables: Pepper (NHV-1A and NHV-IB), Amaranthus, Okra
(LD88-1) and improved packages of recommendations along the
value chain
•
Improved soil management: Compost making and application to crops.
4. Highlight of accomplishments
• Formation of men, women and youth into economic
groups from the existing associations (99 initial
members now more than 180 members)
• Purchase and distribution of inputs (Villa. & schs.)
• Demonstration on quality protein maize improved
variety ART 98SW6-OB production packages (4 ha
esta., 50% adoption)
• Demonstration on cassava improved variety TMS 419
production packages (1.5 ha esta.) (70% adoption)

management (91 participants: 32 females, 59 males)
• Inauguration of multi-stakeholder platform (Over 200 participants
(Farmers, Researchers, LG, ADP, NGOs, Banks, input agencies,
Marketers e.t.c. attended) – July 4 2013
