Stories

Joan Bellmann : On Getting Married
Our mission is to provide people of all backgrounds and beliefs with the opportunity
to record, share, and preserve the stories of our lives.
Since 2003, StoryCorps has collected and archived more than 45,000 interviews with
nearly 90,000 participants. Each conversation is recorded on a free CD to share, and
is preserved at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. StoryCorps
is one of the largest oral history projects of its kind, and millions listen to our broad-
casts on our Listen page and on public radio. Read more…

Bernard Bellmann
Bernard spoke French in the house until schooling
at age 5 because of Adrienne. Graduated Curtis High
School in 1932 and moved to Dresden, Garmany (1932).
Enrolled and studied at Dresden Institute of Technol-
ogy from 1933-1942 in order to spend the family inheri-
tance. Hitler would not allow the family money to leave
Germany. Bernard could spend the money in Germany
as long as it was for educational pruposes and you could
prove you were a family member.
Had to work shoveling coal on a ship to make enough to
visit the United States.
