- 19. 1. VMware vCloud Request Manager has been deprecated with customers recommended to upgrade to VMware Service Manager 2. Requires vCloud Director, available at additional cost 3. Each VMware VM template will have it’s own VMDK, even if the template varies only slightly in it’s configuration options. 4. While VMware offer no alternative to Server App-V, vFabric Application Director would allow more granular control over the application layer for certain apps, and provide the ability to deploy multi-tiered services 5. VMware require multiple tools to deliver any form of insight. vCenter Operations will monitor hosts, vFabric Hyperic will monitor applications on physical servers, but simply collects metrics, without providing guidance for remediation. vFabric APM required for insight into a limited number of applications 6. Lab Manager deprecated, with customers expected to upgrade to vCloud Director, which has no connections with Development IDE. 7. vFabric is a platform focused 100% on Spring, Java, and is available at considerable expense, on a per VM basis. Development tools are disconnected from other management tools, and only vFabric APM can provide insight into the applications, available at additional expense.

- If we take the private cloud tiers and further break them down into individual capabilities, we can see how SC 2012 SP1 and Windows Server 2012 deliver on various customer requirements. Looking at VMware’s portfolio, they have several products that are required to deliver these capabilities. Further, VMware has no solution for Identity management, heterogeneous infrastructure support, or support for multi-hypervisor environments.
- As we saw earlier, VMware is trying to copy Microsoft’s model of simple licensing through ECI, so they came up with a new SKU called vCloud Suite. But emphasize that this new SKU is a licensing construct with at least 6 products, and 2 of these 6 products are suites, so if we count the total number of individual products, it comes down to around 14 different products in the vCloud Suite. Slide 18 further details the complexity of vCloud Suite.
