  1. Hello everyone. My name is Veronica Outlaw and I am going to provide push information cloud applications to help you become more mobile. Go Global with Mobile!
  2. My credentials are presented before you, so I won’t read them off. To add, I have a true passion for learning and teaching technology. I am an advocate on sharing information that is useful to teachers and students that is free and is very pertinent in providing an enriched teaching and learning environment. Hence my purpose of this brief session…to show that teaching and learning does not have to be expensive to be interactive, engaging, and a positive experience for everyone. Students can use these types of applications after completion of school to build eportfolios for future employment. Everything I’m about to demonstrate can be use in school, work, or for personal use.
  3. You’ve made an excellent choice in viewing this presentation. As educators, we must take individual responsibilities to remain abreast of the latest and greatest in technology and how they may be used in distance education to make content more engaging, more interactive, more robust. How do we do this as technology continues to grow at a rapid rate? Well, first, we must not be afraid to immerse ourselves in the technology. What is new and wonderful today, can change tomorrow. What is new and wonderful tomorrow, may be outdated next week. So you see, if we are going to embark on this journey, we have got to do more than read and research about it. We must immerse ourselves, test it, try it, use it, and evaluate it. It is a good idea to stay current with conferences, professional blogs, various readings, and networking with colleagues from other institutions. Let’s find out what others are doing and how they are doing it. Before I get into the presentation, I want to inform you that this presentation will be about pushing the information to you. It is not a “how to” on using any of the tools. As I discuss the resources, you will be provided links to videos, application web sites, and other additional references. The conference coordinator should have also shared an electronic version of this presentation and a handout so you have instant access to all the links. After the presentation, I would expect you to explore on your own, think about how you could use the tools in your online courses, find the tool that best fits your needs. Due to time constraints, I am only going to discuss a few. Again, I reiterate that you take the information, play with the tools, and build upon them. They are all free and easy to use. Take the resources and explore other tools to determine which is the right fit for you and your learners (and/or even for personal use). Let’s get started.
  4. I attended the Creating Futures Through Technology conference in Biloxi, MS last month. I participated in a session presented by Dr. Reenay Rogers of the University of West Alabama entitled Top 10 Web 2.0 Teacher Tools, Helping Teachers COPE. COPE was a way to divide the technology tools into categories according to their use: Collaborate, Organize, Present/publish, and Excite. Due to time constraints, I am only going to discuss 2-3 tools for each category. Others will be shared with you at the end of the presentation and/or the handout provided for your resources. With any of these tools or others, you can watch online demonstrations and/or just play around to see if that is a tool that could work for you. Those with an asterisk can be downloaded as mobile apps on your smartphone and/or other mobile devices. At the end of this presentation, I will place my iphone on the document cam to briefly display and discuss those mobile apps. Again, the majority of them are free and easy to download, and can always be deleted if you wish.
  5. Are you still conditioned to collaborating on articles, journaling, or writing papers with your colleagues and/or students via email? Let’s remove the email mindset for collaborating on building documents and/or files that need various individuals input. By the time the attachment gets emailed around several times, it gets to be a confusing process…and outdated. Using collaboration tools removes that confusion, as individuals can contribute synchronously or asynchronously…no more email attachments. Let’s take a brief look at the two tools on this slide: Google Docs and PBWorks. Both are free. Both provide online, real-time collaborations. Both can be public or private. The user has control over whom is invited. Neither have any software to install. Prevents delays with coordinating events via email, and snail mail. Both allow you to create, share, and/or manage work online. If created for assignments, students like to see their work published, as it provides them a sense of ownership. Both allow the creation of documents and files that allows linking to web sites and other pages created and the formatting of documents using the Word interface. The major difference between them both is that Google Docs has nearly 47 other Google applications used to search, explore, innovate, communicate, share, show, mobile, email, voice, browsers, calendar). GoogleDocs also allows the creation of spreadsheets, drawings, documents, forms, and surveys. Whereas PBWorks (wikis) are normally the creation of documents that are in the form of web pages. So depending on the flexibility you need in the form of options, would determine if you use Google Docs or wikis. In your spare time, explore the links provided on this slide.
  6. Are you still conditioned to saving important files on external storage devices or on your computer? Let’s get organized! The three tools on this slide (Dropbox, Delicious, and Diigo) can help you virtually organize your files and allow you to access you files anytime and anywhere with only the use of a computer and the Internet. All of these tools are considered “cloud computing” meaning…it is a form of technology that conveniently allows on-demand access to a shared pool of computing resources and applications through the cloud, also known as the Internet. Users could access their own personal data including music files, pictures, bookmarks, etc. on a remote server from any computer that has access to the Internet. Dropbox is organized online storage, whether online, mobile, or computer access. You can access it via the account your create online, or via a short cut on any number of computers after downloading the application. If you access the account online, you are not confined to one computer and you can obtain your document anytime, anywhere. If you download the application you can access your files from any of your computers you download the application on. You can access those files and/or create new ones anytime you are ready. Once saved, it is saved to each computer with the application on it, and via the online account. This was a life saver for me because I kept leaving my flash drive behind, or kept saving files on a particular computer that I couldn’t access remotely. Now, when I need the files, wherever I am, at any time, I can access my files via online on the application. Delicious/Diigo are social bookmarking/networking opportunities and can be set to be public/private. Save your own or see what others have saved Tag web sites and see most popular bookmarks via tags Get bookmarks from any computer, anytime, anywhere – everything is in one place Can export favorites specific on each computer to delicious. The difference with Diigo is that it is more interactive in that it also has the capability to collect, highlight, and annotate web sites. It has sticky notes, notes, images, documents. If you have a delicious acct and wish to export all your delicious bookmarks to diigo, its’ easy to do.
  7. The days are vastly diminishing when the average users no longer needs to be concerned with programming and coding to create a static web page to present information. I think we are use to the term “blogging”. Well, WordPress is a hot topic these days on allowing using to create web sites, blogging, or both on one account where pages and posts are created. I had a professional web site that shared information about myself and my career. Upon the introduction to WordPress, I’ve deleted that web site because each time I had to make an update, I did it in Dreamweaver and has to FTP the files to the server to update the site. This became a pain if I was on a computer that didn’t have Dreamweaver…I would have to wait until I was on a particular computer with the software I needed. With WordPress, all I need is my login information and Internet service…no more software, no extensive coding…everything is easy now. I use UA templates so that I am consistency with the UA look and feel. I have static pages that relate to information about myself, my resume, my contact information, etc. I also have 15 plus topics that I have started blogging about. Individuals are allows to make comments, which I moderate. Take a look around and see if you get any ideas for yourself. Students could use WordPress to build electronic portfolios as they enter the workforce. I spoke about Wikis in the collaboration slide. For presenting or publishing, wikis are a great tool to use. When using Wikis as part of an assignment, students gain a sense of ownership when they realize their work can be seen worldwide. It’s an incentive to put forth their best efforts. Wikis could also be used as electronic portfolios to share with future employers. It’s a free tool that students can use after graduation. It can be used in the workplace, church, or for personal use. Slidesix is a presenter desktop application that allows a user to upload and share their PowerPoint presentations live or virtually from the desktop. It allows the record of audio or video narrations. This application is free and allow the user to upload their presentations for the world to see. I have uploaded this one to demonstrate its use and will share that with you at the end of this presenting. Educators from all over the world have uploaded their presentations to allow you to use at your leisure. And you may do the same. If you need quick presentation to reiterate a concept to your students, check out Slidesix to see if something is readily available for you to use.
  8. I want to emphasis that just because we have a vast number of resources of technology doesn’t mean they should be used just to be using it. The overuse of technology could water-down the purpose of the content. Try to remain focus on the objectives and goals of the course, rather than on the technology. Let the technology compliment or supplement the content. That said, there is often dispute about the use of the more bizarre or creative tools being used in education. Again, make sure it has a valuable place and not being used just because its available. The tools I will discuss here are meant to improve student’s achievements by way of providing means of engagement to students and possibly allow them ways to indulge in creative expressions. Voki is a free application that allows the creation of personalized speaking avatars to use in blog, profiles, emails, assignments, discussions, etc. Voki allows you to customize the look of the avatar, provides options for voice (text, voice recorded, phone recording), provides the option to publish and share the avatar, and presents a link to embed or URL link to link and/or share with others. Blabberize is a character animation tool used to create 2D talking animations. This tool allows you to use any picture you have, or templates from the application to create talking animations. The most useful I’ve seen is a lesson created by students using historical figures replaying historical events. It seems silly at first, but dig deep and consider useful ways to use it to create engaging lessons or for students to have fun with producing a piece for an assignment. Quizinator is a tool that allows collections of questions and answers to create worksheets, study sheets, exams, and quizzes, and can be grouped into categories in a centralized location. Not only does the centralized online resource library lets instructors manage the collections to update the library of questions at any time, it becomes easy to make different versions of an exam to eliminate student cheating. Are you an instructor with multiple versions of a course in a learning management system? Do you need a way to combine them all to easily update the questions as needed? Try quizinator. All you need is a web browser and Internet service and your quizzes follow you wherever you go. Are your wheels turning yet? How can you use any of these tools in your online courses?
  9. How do we put this all together? Most of what I discussed have mobile apps that can be downloaded to smartphone or mobile devices. The whole purpose of “cloud computing” is to make our lives easier…makes files and resources readily available by a computer, a browser and or an Internet connection. It makes progress more efficient. You are at a conference and left your flash drive at home. You packed your flash drive and laptop, but the airlines lost your luggage. You are face to face with your colleagues, ready to give your presentation. What do you do? Well, with the tools I discussed today, you are just a few clicks away from still giving your presentation. You know longer need to remember to pack everything. All you need to do is create you masterpiece, make a back up copy to one of the cloud tools, and ensure you have an Internet connection. Documents to Go is an all-in-one application with support of Word, Excel, PPT, PDF, iWork, and other files and attachments that allows you to view, edit and create files on the go. It includes a desktop application to provide 2-way file synchronization and a version with support for Google Docs, Drobox, box.net, idisk, and sugarsync. There is a free version, but those with more advanced features may cost $10 or $17 for the premium version. Documents using Documents to Go can be uploaded to any Google docs or Dropbox account and vice versa. You can edit documents in Google docs or Dropbox and send them directly to Docs to Go. Any changes can be saved and synchronized back to the online account so you always have the latest version. You are waiting at the airport and realize you made several mistakes on a document the students need to complete an assignment. Using Docs to Go allows you to edit the file and distribute it to the account (Google, Dropbox, etc) that you have shared with the students. Now they have the latest version and there are no delays in relaying the information waiting for you to get back to your office. With Delicious and/or Diigo you can always save your favorites and share them with anyone you choose, or make them public. Let’s say you created a folder to house all of your course links for a particular semester. You are away at a conference and learn of a new resource. You can save it to your favorites in one of these account and have it readily accessible to your students. No more note-taking or emailing notes to yourself. Perform the task and allow instant access. WordPress or another blogging tool can be a way to build resources and reading for your students, and can serve as an electronic portfolio of your work. You can make any necessary edits on the fly and have them instantly available to viewers. Any of these tools can be used alone or in combination of each other to view, edit, create, and share materials.
  10. These two links are great resources for browsing for web 2.0 tools. As I said before, the best way to learn is to immerse yourself in the tools to find the one that will satisfy your goals and to not use them just to be using them. Be sure your choice enhances the materials and provides an engaging, interactive and robust experience for your learners.
  11. Now, I’m going to access of few of the applications I discussed just to give you a sample view. Again, there are links provided to you so that you may explore further on your own.
  12. My contact information is provided for you, so feel free to contact me regarding anything from this presentation. I look forward to facilitating the discussion board that will be provided for this session of this virtual conference. I especially look forward to gaining a new network of colleagues. Let’s keep in touch to learn and teach together.
