 Judges will assess of design of the
robot and attachments (what you
create to complete missions)
 Judges will ask questions about the
teams Robot Game strategy
Teams interview with a panel of judges about
the operation and design of their robot

 Design robot using the Lego education
kit
 You will have enough pieces be able to
build a robot and basic attachments
 You can use any official Lego pieces to
supplement your Lego education kit.

2013 Challenge – Robot Game
 Teams program an autonomous
robot to complete missions on the
game board
 Each team has two and a half
minutes to complete as many
missions as possible
 Two members of the team are
allowed at the board during a match;
however, they can switch out if
needed.

What is FLL?  INSPIRES children, ages 9 to 14, to participate in science and technology  ENGAGES children in playful and meaningful learning  PROVIDES a fun, creative, hands-on learning experience  CHALLENGES children to solve real- world problems using robotics  TEACHES children to experiment and overcome obstacles  BUILDS self-esteem and confidence An international program created through a partnership between FIRST and The LEGO Group Team Infinity (2011) State Competition at UMBC

How it Works PROBLEM SOLVING AND CREATIVITY  Present children with a real-world problem  New scientific theme each year TEAMS OF STUDENTS AND MENTORS  Work as a team  Learn with adults and mentors DO IT ALL IN 8 WEEKS  Building, programming, testing, investigating solutions  Competing with peers in high-energy tournaments  Presenting solutions to a real-world problem to a panel of judges Patriots at Patent Trade Office (2013)

  • 11. 2013 Challenge - Nature’s Fury  EXPLORE awe-inspiring storm, quakes, waves and more that we call natural disasters  DELVE into questions surrounding how to prepare for natural disasters  CREATE a solution for what can be done when intense natural events meet the places where people live, work and play  PLAY robot games based on problems faced before, during and after a natural disaster This year, FLL teams embark on an exploration of natural disasters as they:

  • 14. 2013 Challenge - The Project  Identify a community that could experience a natural disaster  Identify a problem that happens when a natural disaster occurs  Create an innovative solution that helps people prepare, stay safe, or rebuild  Share your problem and solution with others
  • 15. 2013 Challenge – The Project  Avalanche or landslide  Tornado or cyclone  Earthquake  Tsunami  Flood  Volcanic eruption  Hurricane  Wildfire  Storm (wind, sand, blizzard, or rain) The team must select a nature disaster from following list:
  • 16. 2013 Challenge – Robot Design  Teams will demonstrate their favorite robotic missions  Judges will assess of design of the robot and attachments (what you create to complete missions)  Judges will ask questions about the teams Robot Game strategy Teams interview with a panel of judges about the operation and design of their robot Robotic Engineers (2011) Omega Supreme Robot
  • 17. 2013 Challenge – Robot Design  Design robot using the Lego education kit  You will have enough pieces be able to build a robot and basic attachments  You can use any official Lego pieces to supplement your Lego education kit.  Good place to start is Constructopedia Additional Information
  • 18. 2013 Challenge – Robot Game  Teams program an autonomous robot to complete missions on the game board  Each team has two and a half minutes to complete as many missions as possible  Two members of the team are allowed at the board during a match; however, they can switch out if needed.
