Web is changing. Australian government following the Obama administration - online engagement is a core strategy. New development languages on the web ( HTML5 and WAI-ARIA ) New devices to access the web ( iPhone ), Web of things: Fridge Woolworths 3 month return. Web 4.0 (india): virtual and physical world merging, Mood Human right: Internationally, governments see the need to produce accessible information is even more critical – United Nations report in June 2011 stated that disconnecting people from the internet is a human rights violation and against international law (Egypt we see the alternative where they shut the web down during the recent unrest) Ageing population: In 5 years time huge increase in the web population that requires the use of customisation of adaptive technologies to compensate for a natural decline in vision, hearing or mobility as we age. 50 something's of today are not going to just stop using the web or reading PDF files online because they are not accessible – they will demand access as a human right. Accessibility is not going away
VA conducted an internal study in Dec 2010 on 12 Federal or popular government websites: 11 of the sites failed to meet basic levels of accessibility (WCAG 2.0 Level A) Majority demonstrated some strong accessibility considerations in their design and implementation Heading in right direction, but we need that extra push... This is where the National Transition Strategy comes in that we will discuss later. 45% of websites fine now – was around 25% in 2010 Government going for level AA not just A
