2. Electric Traction System
• Trolley Wire
• Catenaries
• Current Collectors
• Feeding & Distribution Systems
• Traction Substation
• Negative Booster
3. Electric Traction System
• Trolley wire refers to Overhead line, used to
transmit electricity to trains, trams and
trolleybuses.
• A catenary is a system of overhead wires used
to supply electricity to a locomotive, tram
(streetcar), or light rail vehicle that is equipped
with a pantograph.
4. Catenary (upper photo) is suited to higher-speed rail vehicles. Trolley wire (lower
photo) is suited to slower-speed trams (streetcars) and light rail vehicles.
5. Electric Traction System
• Three types of current collectors are in
common use.
1. Trolley Collector
2. Bow Collector
3. Pantograph Collector
7. Electric Traction System
• A traction substation, traction current converter
plant or traction power substation
substation (TPSS) is an electrical substation
that converts electric power from the form
provided by the electrical power industry for
public utility service to an appropriate voltage,
current type and frequency to supply railways,
trams (streetcars) or trolleybuses with traction
current.
8. Electric Traction System
Following points are considered while selecting the site
for TSS
• Capaicty of transformer and voltage regulation
Voltage Level
• It should be approachable by road and preferably near
a Railway station for better connectivity by Road as
well rail
• Location should be free from water flooding
• To avoid land acquisition
• There is a need to convert FP with neutral section.
Such planning can be decided in advance.
9. Electric Traction System
• Negative Booster
The electromagnetic field from a single-
phase alternating current flowing through the s
ystem’s wires has an effect on aerial and cable
communication lines, on metal pipelines, and o
n other service or communication lines located
near electrified railroads. Negative booster tran
sformers are designed to reduce this effect.
