12. The main value of Prima Industrie is Technology and Innovation since the beginning in 1977.
Prima Industrie alredy invest about 5,2% of yearly turnover in R&D programs, but it is not enough!
In the last years technologies are drastically changing and digital transformation will affect the manufacturing world. University
will play a key role for the company competitiveness for three main factors:
1. New Technology. Company are always concentrated in their core business activities. New technology are not sufficiently
investigated and studied. When innovation happens, for the companies it is too late. Not enough time to recover the
technology gap with new competitors/pioneers.
2. Innovation Timing. New business based on innovation has to be profitable. The innovation timing is the most important
factor for profitability.
3. New Skills. The company change starts from skilled people. All new technologies require new skills.
Open Innovation Approach
13. OPEN INNOVATION IS THE SOLUTION
Companies and universities have to work together!
-New Technologies. New technology has to be properly addressed during joint research projects, through joint research lab and
by using company-univerty reasearch partnerships.
-Tecnology Maturation. Different TRL Technology readiness levels require different approaches. The competence centers will
bridge the research outcomes (TRL 4-5) and the new products (TRL 8-9). Full and integrated pilot lines will support the companies
by decreasing investment risks in new technologies. Case studies and applications based on new technologies will accelerate the
technology transfer process.
-New Business. Spinoff/startup or joint labs could integrate traditional business and they could become new businesses and/or
new revenues.
-Education. New skills . Master (for instance additive manufacturing and Industry 4.0) and Industrial PHD will educate and train
people in time with new technology adoption.

16. 2011 – PPPLab, Politecnico di Torino - Prima Industrie – Prima Electro joint lab
• In 2009 the laser source market changed. Fiber laser, a disruptive technology for laser material
processing, got an important part of the CO2 laser market.
• In 2011 Prima Industrie, Prima Electro and Politecnico di Torino inaugurated the solid state laser PPP Lab
to react as fast as possible.
