advises and help to an less
experienced person
Protégé
– Origin of term
• French; from the past
participle of protéger (to
protect).
– Dictionary Meaning
• One whose welfare,
training, or career is
promoted by an influential
person.
Mentors and Protégés Relationship
An organization is the establishment where the
protégé or both protégé and mentor work.
The organization participates itself as an Artificial
person by allowing employees to participate in
mentoring program for success and development
Distinguish Between
MENTOR PROTEGE
Mentor are individual with Advance
experience and knowledge.
Who support the protégé’s career.
Protégé also an individual who receives
guidance, coaching and support from the
mentor
Mentor are usually in Mid career stage Protégé are in their early career stages.
Mentor provide support that engage
talented protégés to increase job
satisfaction and work effectiveness.
Protégé contributes the success of
mentoring.
Responsibilities of Mentors
Physical organization of the firm.
Human Resource of the firm.
Development of personal Relationship with the
protégé.
Evaluating the Protégé.
Responsibilities of Proteges
Need to demonstrate commitment to the
mentoring process.
Invest time to gain knowledge of the company.
Ask questions and engage in Problem solving.
Organizational cultures- way of addressing,
dress code.
Qualities of Successful Mentor-
Protégé Relationship
Mentor Qualities:
– Stronger interpersonal skill.
– Technical competence/expertise.
– Knowledge of organization and profession.
– Status/Prestige within the organization and profession.
– Ability to share credit.
– Patience.

– Self realize growth needs.
– A record of accepting challenging
assignment.
– Ability to perform in more than
one skill area.

Phase Definition
Initiation 6 mo. – 1 year; period during which rlshp gets
started & begins to have importance.
Cultivation 2 – 5 years; period during which the range of
career & psychosocial functions provided expand
to maximum.
Separation 6 mo. – 2 years; period after a significant change in
structural role rlshp &/or in the emotional
experience of rlshp
Redefinition Indefinite; period during which rlshp ends of takes
on different characteristics (i.e peers)
