3. Dark, dirty and slow, Zimbabwe's
trains, like much else in the
impoverished southern African country,
have seen better days.
Once the preferred mode of transport
for most Zimbabweans, the state-run
rail service mirrors the decline in the
country's economic fortunes during the
last two decades under the leadership
of former President Robert Mugabe.

Gilbert Mthinzima Ndlovu, a
veteran of Zimbabwe's 1970s
independence war and a
security guard at the National
Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) for
35 years, yearns for the old days
when trains were full and
arrived on time.
"Times are different now as we
have few passengers," the off-
duty Ndlovu told Reuters as he
rested in a badly lit first class
cabin during the journey from
the capital Harare to his home in
Bulawayo, Zimbabwe's second
city.

Now the 10-hour journey can take 16
hours, he said.
Not surprising, then, that many
Zimbaweans prefer to make the 440
km (273 mile) journey by bus or
public taxi than have to endure a cold
overnight train ride - even if at $10
the train ride costs only half as much.

The train carriages often lack
lighting and water, and the toilets
are filthy. The signalling and
information systems are often
vandalised and some tracks
overgrown with grass and weeds
because they have not been used in
years.
NRZ is now trying to improve its
fortunes.

32. "Women all over the world are working in a wider number of areas and I
think Japan needs to be a part of that," said petty officer Akiko Ihara, 31,
standing beside one of the helicopters she helps to maintain.
The proportion of women in the Kaga's 450-strong crew is about 9 percent,
a level Japan is targeting for the military overall by 2030 from 6 percent
now. That would still fall short of U.S., where 15 percent of people in
uniform are women, and Britain with 10 percent.
"We all work in different teams around the ship but we are all friends,"
Ihara added. "We do sometimes moan a little about our male colleagues."
The nine-year veteran says she has encountered no workplace
discrimination, and would challenge any man who thinks women are
unsuited for military life to work with her.

Nadia Murad, a Yazidi rights activist and
survivor of sexual slavery by Islamic State,
shares the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize with Denis
Mukwege, a doctor who helps victims of sexual
violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
They were honored for their efforts to end the
use of sexual violence as a weapon of war, the
Norwegian Nobel Committee said. Murad is an
advocate for the Yazidi minority in Iraq and for
refugee and women's rights in general. She was
enslaved and raped by Islamic State fighters in
Mosul, Iraq, in 2014. "Nadia Murad is the
witness who tells of the abuses perpetrated
against herself and others," the Committee said
in its citation. "Each of them in their own way
has helped to give greater visibility to war-time
sexual violence, so that the perpetrators can be
held accountable for their actions." Murad said
she shared the award "with all Yazidis with all
the Iraqis, Kurds and all the minorities and all
survivors of sexual violence around the world ...
For myself, I think of my mother, who was
murdered by Daesh," she said said in a
statement to Reuters, using an Arabic term for

Denis Mukwege, a doctor who helps victims of
sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of
Congo, shares the Nobel Peace Prize with Nadia
Murad. "Denis Mukwege is the helper who has
devoted his life to defending these victims," the
Committee said in its citation. Mukwege heads the
Panzi Hospital in the eastern Congo city of Bukavu.
The clinic receives thousands of women each year,
many of them requiring surgery from sexual
violence. "Rape in war has been a crime for
centuries. But it was a crime in the shadows. The
two laureates have both shone a light on it," Dan
Smith, Director of the Stockholm International
Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), told Reuters.
Mukwege dedicated his Nobel award to all women
affected by rape and sexual violence. He has
performed surgery on scores of women after they
had been raped by armed men, and campaigned to
highlight their plight. He also provides HIV/AIDS
treatment as well as free maternal care. Although
the Second Congo War, which killed more than five
million people, formally ended in 2003, violence
remains rampant, with militias frequently targeting
civilians. The Panzi Hospital has also been the
target of threats, and in 2012 Mukwege's home
was invaded by armed men who held his
daughters at gunpoint, shot at him and killed his
bodyguard. Mukwege was in the operating room
when he was told the news. "Dear survivors all
over the world, I would like to tell you that
through this prize, the world is listening to you and
rejects indifference, the world refuses to stand idly
by in the face of your suffering," he said.

Frances Arnold of the California Institute of Technology becomes only the fifth woman to
win a chemistry Nobel. Arnold, George Smith and Gregory Winter won the 2018 Nobel Prize
for Chemistry for harnessing the power of evolution to generate novel proteins used in
everything from environmentally friendly detergents to cancer drugs. She was awarded half
of the $1 million prize while Smith and Winter shared the other half. "Some people breed
cats and dogs. I breed molecules," Arnold told Reuters after learning of the award, which
she said had come as a complete surprise. Her research on enzymes -- proteins that catalyze
chemical reactions -- laid the bedrock for the development of better industrial chemicals
and pharmaceuticals. "There are enzymes now in detergents that we use in our dishwasher
and have been evolved by this process. There are also enzymes that can create new types of
biofuels or that catalyze the formation of building blocks for new medicines," said chairman
of the Nobel chemistry committee Claes Gustafsson. "All this you can do with enzymes that
Frances Arnold has developed." REUTERS/Kyle Grillot

stable contexts, child marriage
is rising at alarming rates in
humanitarian settings.

Experts say girls in their first
decade are better positioned for
success than their mothers and
grandmothers were, thanks to
advances in health care and
nutrition, and wider access to
education. But they say more
must be done to keep adolescent
and teenage girls in school, and to
protect them from violence,
unintended pregnancies and
forced marriage, which remains
common in much of the
developing world.

“Poverty, violence, and cultural
traditions oppress millions of girls in
every part of the world,” said Stephanie
Sinclair, a visual journalist who founded
“Too Young To Wed,” which campaigns
to protect girls’ rights and end child
marriage, while offering services to
survivors. . “It is still a global struggle to
have girls valued for more than their
bodies — for just their sexuality, fertility
and labor.”
The U.N. children’s agency says 12
million girls under the age of 18 will
marry this year, and 21 million between
the aged of 15 and 19 will get pregnant.
“Every girl should have the right to
decide for herself, if, when and whom to
marry,” Sinclair said. “To be allowed to
be children and teens, with access to
gender specific health care and all levels
of education; and free to determine the
course of their own lives.”

says that when one of the girls asked her
why she had a penis, a friend jumped in.
"She's transsexual," the child explained,
nonchalantly. That level of comfort is no
doubt in part because Luana herself
appears so at ease. In 2013, she became
the youngest person to take advantage
of a progressive Argentine law that
allows people to identify their own
gender for legal purposes. (AP

The decision to award this year’s Nobel
Peace Prize to Nadia Murad, 25, who
was among thousands of women and
girls kidnapped and enslaved by the
Islamic State group in 2014, highlighted
a particularly vicious form of sexual
assault.
But the #MeToo campaign has shown
that less violent forms of sexual abuse
and misconduct are all too common,
affecting women at all income levels
and across multiple industries. Even in
wealthy countries, women face
persistent pay gaps and other forms of
discrimination.
Here is a selection of pictures showing
the daily lives of girls across the globe,
all taken by female Associated Press
photojournalists.

The Soyuz MS-10 spacecraft carrying the
crew of astronaut Nick Hague of the U.S. and
cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin of Russia blasts
off to the International Space Station (ISS)
from the launchpad at the Baikonur
Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan. The two-man
crew had to make a dramatic emergency
landing when a rocket failed in mid-air, but
they landed safely without harm and rescue
crews quickly linked up with them, NASA,
the U.S. space agency, and Russia's
Roscosmos said. The Soyuz capsule carrying
them separated from the malfunctioning
rocket and made what is called a steep
ballistic descent with parachutes helping
slow its speed. Paratroopers parachuted to
the rescue site, TASS news agency reported.
