In this sparsely populated village east of Moscow, Mikhail Korshunov’s house is visible from far away.
Portraits of Russian rulers — from the 13th-century Novgorod prince, Alexander Nevsky, to President Vladimir
Putin — adorn its facade.
Korshunov, a self-taught artist, painted them along with many other things. He uses different styles and
techniques. His portraits of Russian leaders are painted in a realistic manner, but he also made a few icons
imitating the old traditional style.
His status of a local celebrity earned him an order from one local restaurant, whose facade and interiors he
decorated, but his art is mostly non-commercial.
Korshunov, a former firefighter who now works as a forest ranger, also writes poetry.
Villagers in Severnaya Griva, 140 kilometers (nearly 90 miles) east of Moscow, like him for his talents and
generosity: He once built a wooden chute for children.
Like other residents of his half-abandoned village, he relies on his land plot to feed himself. But his tractor
also looks peculiar: an image of deer is painted on its side.

The Superhuman Sports
Society, a Tokyo-based group of

sports since its launch in 2015,
including "HADO", or "wave

dodge waves of light as they
fire energy balls at each other
in a virtual arena. The game is
similar to the action seen in the
"Dragon Ball" manga-animation
franchise and "Street Fighter"

Follow a free-spirited, energetic, and eccentric 83-year-
old Californian through her aerobic daily routine—a
true inspiration to anyone who fears that age will slow
them down.
Photographs and text by Jessica Rattner
Carol Schuldt is a dynamic, strong, and fiercely independent
83-year-old woman.
As she goes about her unusual daily routines—clad in thrift
store mini-skirts, colorful moth-eaten sweaters, and bright
silk—some might say that Carol embodies the quirky,
creative and iconoclastic spirit of her native San Francisco.
Carol’s brightly painted home and distinctive clothes stand
out in the foggy, beachside Outer Sunset neighborhood
where she has lived for more than 50 years. Known by many
as the “Queen of the Beach,” she has long been a familiar
and inspiring sight in her fast-changing city.
Carol’s weathered body (which has been through hip
replacement surgery and several bouts with cancer) houses
a youthful spirit that is energized and sustained by her
intense connection to the sun and the ocean. Most days she
rides her bicycle to the beach, where she bodysurfs naked
in the frigid Pacific. When the beach is shrouded in “F-O-G”
(a word she will not utter, but only spell), Carol jumps in her
trinket-festooned pickup and races across the Golden Gate
Bridge to skinny dip in a sun-dappled mountain spring.
For several years I have been photographing Carol, both at
her home and on her daily adventures in nature. She is a
fascinating character and, I believe, a potential inspiration
to many—especially older adults who fear that age will slow
them down.

Associated Press photographer Kin Cheung spent time recently photographing
some of the tiny subdivided housing units in Hong Kong, known as “coffin
homes,” and those who live in them. Cheung reports that there is a “dark side
to the property boom in wealthy Hong Kong, where hundreds of thousands of
people priced out of the market must live in partitioned apartments, ‘coffin
homes’ and other inadequate housing.” These residents are among an
estimated 200,000 people in Hong Kong living in such tiny subdivided units,
some so small that a person cannot even fully stretch out their legs.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei denounced the
heated rhetoric of Iran's presidential election campaign on
Wednesday as "unworthy", a thinly-veiled rebuke of
pragmatist President Hassan Rouhani's attacks on his main
conservative challenger. Khamenei's intervention two days
before Iranians go to the polls could help sway the vote by
signalling the supreme leader's dissatisfaction with Rouhani's
conduct. "In the election debates, some remarks were made
that were unworthy of the Iranian nation. But the (wide)
participation of the people will erase all of that," Khamenei
told an audience on Wednesday, according to his own

Crafty Venezuelans Use
Fecal Bombs and Bottle
Masks Against Maduro
Venezuelans from all walks of life are using homemade shields, gas
masks and fecal bombs to try to force new elections.
A Venezuelan opposition activist wearing a homemade
gas mask takes cover behind a makeshift shield as clashes
erupt with riot police during a protest against President
Nicolas Maduro on May 8, 2017 in Caracas.
In a country where finding even a Tylenol can be a
weekslong ordeal, protesters are employing every scrap
of material they can find as makeshift weaponry to
protect themselves while confronting police and national
guardsmen who fire tear gas and rubber bullets to
disperse marchers. Protesters are vowing to remain on
the streets even as the death toll mounts after six weeks
of unrest.

Greece crisis : one family’s struggle
Seven years into Greece's
deepening economic crisis,
those living on the
breadline have been hit
hard.
The Argyros family are
emblematic of the poverty
in Greece after years of
austerity demanded by the
country's international
creditors.

Five years since
abandoning their barren
Aegean island of Leros for
Athens, they are trapped
in a vicious cycle of
unemployment and debt.
Kostas Argyros, 35, picks
up only occasional work as
an odd-job man and his
30-year-old wife Olga, a
nurse, has been
unemployed for a nearly
decade.

The only evening light is the blue
glare of a TV screen, for fear of
racking up more debt. Five-watt

life they had hoped for appears as
far away as ever.
"We came here for a better future,"
Olga said. "But things went from
bad to worse."

  • 2. In this sparsely populated village east of Moscow, Mikhail Korshunov’s house is visible from far away. Portraits of Russian rulers — from the 13th-century Novgorod prince, Alexander Nevsky, to President Vladimir Putin — adorn its facade. Korshunov, a self-taught artist, painted them along with many other things. He uses different styles and techniques. His portraits of Russian leaders are painted in a realistic manner, but he also made a few icons imitating the old traditional style. His status of a local celebrity earned him an order from one local restaurant, whose facade and interiors he decorated, but his art is mostly non-commercial. Korshunov, a former firefighter who now works as a forest ranger, also writes poetry. Villagers in Severnaya Griva, 140 kilometers (nearly 90 miles) east of Moscow, like him for his talents and generosity: He once built a wooden chute for children. Like other residents of his half-abandoned village, he relies on his land plot to feed himself. But his tractor also looks peculiar: an image of deer is painted on its side. • 90. Awards Sea Change Follow a free-spirited, energetic, and eccentric 83-year- old Californian through her aerobic daily routine—a true inspiration to anyone who fears that age will slow them down. Photographs and text by Jessica Rattner Carol Schuldt is a dynamic, strong, and fiercely independent 83-year-old woman. As she goes about her unusual daily routines—clad in thrift store mini-skirts, colorful moth-eaten sweaters, and bright silk—some might say that Carol embodies the quirky, creative and iconoclastic spirit of her native San Francisco. Carol’s brightly painted home and distinctive clothes stand out in the foggy, beachside Outer Sunset neighborhood where she has lived for more than 50 years. Known by many as the “Queen of the Beach,” she has long been a familiar and inspiring sight in her fast-changing city. Carol’s weathered body (which has been through hip replacement surgery and several bouts with cancer) houses a youthful spirit that is energized and sustained by her intense connection to the sun and the ocean. Most days she rides her bicycle to the beach, where she bodysurfs naked in the frigid Pacific. When the beach is shrouded in “F-O-G” (a word she will not utter, but only spell), Carol jumps in her trinket-festooned pickup and races across the Golden Gate Bridge to skinny dip in a sun-dappled mountain spring. For several years I have been photographing Carol, both at her home and on her daily adventures in nature. She is a fascinating character and, I believe, a potential inspiration to many—especially older adults who fear that age will slow them down. —Jessica Eve Rattner Editor’s Note: Rattner’s project was recognized by the jury of the LensCulture Portrait Awards 2017—don’t miss the work from all 44 of the outstanding, international talents! This year, Rattner was a finalist for the Arnold Newman prize and the Jacob Riis Award. You can follow her work on her personal website Carol scans the late afternoon surf. • 157. Reuters / Wednesday, May 17, 2017 Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei waves before speaking to the audience in Tehran, Iran, May 17, 2017. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei denounced the heated rhetoric of Iran's presidential election campaign on Wednesday as "unworthy", a thinly-veiled rebuke of pragmatist President Hassan Rouhani's attacks on his main conservative challenger. Khamenei's intervention two days before Iranians go to the polls could help sway the vote by signalling the supreme leader's dissatisfaction with Rouhani's conduct. "In the election debates, some remarks were made that were unworthy of the Iranian nation. But the (wide) participation of the people will erase all of that," Khamenei told an audience on Wednesday, according to his own website.
