This PowerPoint contains information about a water system that can be used to recycle grey water; it also explains the terms as like Water Supply, Sanitation, Water Hygiene and Waste Management...
3. To do this we must answer the
‘What,Who,Why,When,How’ questions;
What is the project?
Who is the project for?
Why are we making the project?
When does the project have to be finished by?
How are we going to do the project?
9. Sanitation...
Good hygiene Prevents
transmission of
disease
What is it?
Human waste Removal of Dirty
removal Water
10. Why do we need to remove
waste water?
Malaria
Cholera &
many more!
Contaminates water
supplies
Breeding Grounds for
Breeding Grounds for flies mosquitoes
Dirty
water
11. Soak Pits can be used with latrines
Septic Tank
Pre-treatment Soak Pit
Required
Latrine
Soakaway
Watertight
settling tank
Liquids
Solids
12. Septic Tanks
The tank needs periodic
cleaning to remove scum and
built up sludge about every 3
years.
Waste water needs to remain
in tank for minimum 24 hrs to
ensure it settles
14. Water Hygiene
Why?
Good water hygiene can improve health and
wellbeing
What?
Scrubbing your hand with soap for more
than 20s can reduce risk of illness by up to
90%.
Does anyone know the correct hand
washing method?!
16. Why is waste management
important?
Protects human health
Reduce environment pollution
Improves quality of life
Make rural areas clean
Promotes recycling
and reuse-save
resources
Convert bio waste into energy
17. Design Brief:
Todesign a water system
grey
that can be used to recycle
water at Vigyan Ashram.
18. Water terminology!
White Water:
Portable, fresh water than can be used for drinking
Grey Water:
Left over water from kitchen
sink, bathroom, showers, hand basins, washing
machine etc.
Black Water:
Sewage or Wastewater: Any water containing human
waste.
20. Split into 4 groups
Decide on a team name
Choose a team leader
21. Survey
Survey how water is used in Vigyan
Ashram
Use a range of tools to survey:
Photographs & videos
Draw maps
Sketches
Be thorough – we want to have all the
information about water supply and
wastewater at Vigyan Ashram.
22. Photographs
Think about the photograph you are
taking:
Describe what is happening in the picture?
Why?
If someone else who had never been to
Vigyan Ashram looked at photos – what
would they see?
The camera can be borrowed for today
but must be returned by 5pm.
23. Draw maps
Water moves, map where it comes from
and where it goes.
Draw a plan of the whole ashram in your
sketchbooks.
Map water usage. E.g:
Anan’s
Cow shed
Boys’s Accommodation Classroom
Guest house
Engineering
Energy & Environment
Ama’s
Foodlab Workshop
Office/ Water Pump
Kitchen
24. Storage
Take a measuring tape with you and
note measurements of tanks.
Also use measuring tape to work out
how long pipes are between storage and
usage.
Take particularly detailed measurements
around kitchen sinks and water storage
for kitchen.
25. Answer the following questions:
Where do we get our drinking water?
Where is it stored?
Where does the wastewater from all the
toilets go?
Where does the water from the sinks
and bathrooms go?
Where would be good to use grey water
recycling?
26. But first plan how you are
going to conduct the survey as
a group...
27. Homework
By tomorrow:
Complete group water assessment
Also... write down the stakeholders involved
in this project and their needs....
If you would like assistance I will be in office.
