4. “There are four ways, and only four ways,
in which we have contact with the world.
We are evaluated and classified by these
four contacts: what we do, how we look,
what we say, and how we say it.“
- Dale Carnegie
Communication is an important
facet of life.
Communication skills are
essential in all spheres of life.
5. - In the present day the
importance of
communication has
increased manifold.
- Language is a form of communication
by using specific symbols and sounds
either via reading or talking.
- It is found that it helps us communicate
and show our feelings , ideas, moods,
attitudes and expressions at our will.
6. English is the most popular language nowadays,
and it has been for centuries.
It is one of the most important and crucial skills to
have for personal success, fun and any other part of
life.
It is a global formula for learning.
The English language is an international means for
communication and expressing one's feelings
anytime and anywhere.
Today we are living in a "Global Village".
7. English as a language performs four important and
utilitarian services, viz :
(a) International Language,
(b) Window to new knowledge,
(c) Library medium of Reference, and
(d) Link Language.
Sixty percent of our population will be at working age
by 2020.
So, we need to emphasize
on giving technical as well
as English training to the next
generation
8. Only the English teacher can
equip the large potential
workforce of our country to
rise up to the challenge and
opportunity that the next
millennium presents us with.
“Teaching is The profession
ThaT creaTes all The
oThers.”
Teaching English as a foreign language is
about conveying information to students in an
interesting way and communicating a love
and passion for the English language.
9. We can define an effective teacher of English as
someone who possesses 5 I’s:-
1) Imagination ; 2) Innovativeness ;
3) Interaction ; 4) Independent
thinking ;
5) Interdependence.
The general objectives of teaching English are
mainly divided into two
(i) Receptive - listening to and reading the
language with understanding.
(ii) Communicative - when he attempts to speak
and write, he conveys something.
10. Organizing Courses,
Setting Goals and Objectives,
Creating a Learning Environment and
Evaluating Students
An English teacher must
play the different roles of
controller, organizer,
participant, helper,
prompter and assessor.
11. * A quarter of the world’s
population uses various
forms of English for a
range of communication
* It is estimated that 75% of all international
communication in writing,
* 80% of all information in the world’s computers and
* 90% of the Internet contents are in English.
* We can say that for the first time in the history of
civilization, we appear to be on the verge of having a
genuine world language.
12. Hence, students would need to be given the skills to perform
the various everyday tasks of this modern world, such as :-
sending emails,
texting SMSes and
resourcing data from the Internet,
learning how to make the best use of it.
The whole learning-teaching process should be
orientated towards –
personality development
and developing an
awareness of world issues
like environment, health,
world peace, human rights
and so on.
13. In addition,interview skills,
study skills and
reference
skills must become an
integral part of the
language learning
programme.
Every effort should be expended to
developing a new mindset in the
students in order to create in the world
14. The English teachers must
be proficient in language
skills and skilled in the
proposed teaching
methodology.
The teachers must have suitable attitudes and
world view (general awareness of the current issues).
They must be global-centric rather than ethno-centric.
15. Above all be good role models ,
The English teachers need to be encouraging
and helpful group leaders who are not
dogmatic about their ideals and opinions.
The English teachers would
perceive themselves as
participants in the
learning process rather
than its source.
16. They must be able to use
the latest media and
technological
innovations and make
lifelong learning their
mission.
Unless the new technology
is adopted in English
language teaching, we can
not impart language skills
in our learners at the rate
of growing competition.
17. We are at a historic stage
of evolution in the field of
English Language Teaching.
For the first time, we have the
challenge to teach English as a
Universal Auxiliary Language
(or Global Link language) to
millions of people in all parts
of the world.
18. We, as language teachers,
have to rise to the occasion,
arrive at a clear picture of the
process at work, and set out
to successfully accomplish
the task at hand.
There must be flexibility
at every stage, with plenty
of room left for creativity
and innovation as per our
own specific needs and
environment.
19. “The mediocre teacher tells.
The good teacher explains.
The superior teacher demonstrates.
The great teacher inspires.”
– William Ward.
