Vidya & Child
o Vidya & Child works with the mission to
help bridge the gap for those children
who need education and have no access
to the facilities for learning existing in
our society.
o It started in July 1998 to work toward
providing a learning environment which
can lead to a strong educational
foundation as well as help a child in
identifying the uniqueness within.
2 Confidential
o Socio-economic conditions and
prevalent mindsets make it impossible
for a vast majority of children to go to
school.
o The child is hardly exposed to any form
of learning and therefore the
personality of the child does not grow.
As the child grows in age the earning
potential remains the same as that of
the parent. The cycle repeats itself
generation after generation.
3 Confidential
o The belief that every child is capable of
greatness is the driving force which provides a
platform wherein every child is given the
freedom to explore and take decisions for a
meaningful life ahead.
o Each year their performance, enthusiasm and
increased confidence reinforces our belief
towards their inherent capabilities and
aptitude for excellence.
o It is indeed unfortunate that a large majority
of children in India are denied this
opportunity and have no hope to learn and
take advantage of the ever increasing progress
made by mankind.
4 Confidential
o Vidya & Child started with 2 children and now
works with over 700 children across 4
locations through its non formal and after
school support centres.
o There are over 100 children who have been
mainstreamed into formal schools and 11
children have finished Class XII and are all
pursuing higher studies.
o These children belong to socio-economically
marginalised sections of society, majority of
them have parents who are illiterate/ semi-
literate and work as domestic servants,
industrial workers, rickshaw-pullers, street
vendors, plumbers and carpenters.
5 Confidential
o Over the last eleven years we have been able to
connect with the parents so that they now send
their daughters to study and learn.
o When we started, many girls who came to us were
either school dropouts or had only studied in their
village and not continued with their studies after
their parents moved to Noida. As a result many of
the children who enrolled with us were highly
overaged. However their keenness to learn and
conviction to study with much smaller children was
in itself a huge learning experience for us.
o Continuous interaction with parents has ensured
that now many enrol their daughters with us at an
early age.
6 Confidential
o Each child’s insatiable energy,
determination to succeed and ever smiling
faces drives us to improve on our inputs
and reinforces our beliefs:
o Every child has a right to be educated
o Every child has capabilities that need to be
explored and channelised
o Every child dreams and yearns to learn, to
make a place for himself in society
o We in Vidya & Child can through our small
support help them explore their talents to
translate into an improved and meaningful
life.
7 Confidential
o To develop a creative learning environment for children
and help them merge with the mainstream of society
o Vidya & Child is an opportunity wherein children are
initiated into an academic environment and an equally
strong creative learning process.
o Children who have been a part of this process are
beautiful painters, kathak dancers, tabla players, can set
up their own magic show, tattoo artists as well as children
who excel in Maths, Science and Languages.
o We strive for a holistic educational environment where
academic excellence is as important as recognising ones
strengths within.
o We strive to provide a positive atmosphere where every
child has the opportunity to explore, create and focus on
their talents.
8 Confidential
o Education at Vidya & Child involves
mainstreaming children into schools for
them to complete school education.
o This crucial step is a platform from where
children can then decide career paths and
aspire for higher studies.
o It enables a child to access the vast
opportunities of higher learning that are
otherwise impossible to reach.
o Vidya & Child strengthens the child to
compete in the mainstream world and to
utilise the potential within.
9 Confidential
o Vidya & Child motivates the parent and
the child in visualising a purposeful future
and the meaningful role that education
plays in every person’s life.
o A very strong parent outreach programme
tries to ensure that the child and the
parent are motivated in investing the long
years that are needed for a child to finish
school education and move forward
towards a suitable career choice to enable
the child to be independent.

12 Confidential
o Vidya & Child first initiates the child into an
educational process through its non formal
education centres
o Our non formal education centres follow an
internally developed curriculum.
o Classes are organised from Nursery to Class V.
o The children are taught in groups of twenty each
and assigned to one teacher. This method of
teaching ensures that each child is given maximum
individual attention.
o The program at our non formal education centres
focuses on building a strong educational base for the
child to be able to cope with the formal schooling
system after Class V.
13 Confidential
o All subjects are taught through a variety of
exercises so that children get the
opportunity to develop their logic and
creative skills.
o The classes are conducted in an informal
atmosphere where children are given
ample opportunity and encouragement to
unleash their academic & creative
potential.
o A detailed plan for teaching every module
is maintained for teaching to be effective
and well organised.
14 Confidential
o Children are admitted in groups of 20 every 8
- 12 months.
o The first task is to initiate a dialogue with the
family over the child’s future.
o The importance of the child going to school is
stressed upon.
o In most cases the parents are very eager and
understand the importance of education but
are extremely disheartened because of their
harsh living conditions and financial
constraints.
o Further they are not aware of the avenues to
quality education.
15 Confidential
o It is here that we reinforce the need for
personal hygiene, punctuality and
attendance.
o All classes are held in an informal
atmosphere and learning is made out to
be fun with full encouragement being
given to a child’s creative potential.
16 Confidential
o Evaluation of all groups is made on a
monthly basis. Parents are informed of
the child’s progress.
o On completion of Class V, Vidya & Child
helps these children gain admission in
mainstream schools.
17 Confidential
o Admission to formal schools and support till completion of
School Education
o Vidya & Child facilitates admission of children into the
formal school system after the child completes Class V at
our non formal education centres.
o During years while the child attends the classes organised
at our centres a very strong relationship is built with the
parents.
o A continuous dialogue is maintained where we keep
discussing with the parents their views and objectives on
their child’s education.
o We are able to develop on their commitment towards
their child’s education and the parents are able to
appreciate the long term support that their child will
require from them for completing school education.
18 Confidential
o The schools are carefully selected by our
board with respect to the quality of
education they provide and their social
commitment towards the cause of the less
privileged.
o School Costs are borne jointly by the
parents and Vidya & Child.
o We insist that the parents contribute
towards their child’s school education
costs.
o This is to ensure that the parents further
acquire a sense of commitment to and
involvement in the child’s education.
19 Confidential
o We interact with the school authorities
to keep abreast of the child’s progress
at school and take preventive steps
wherever required in case of any issues
that may arise.
o After school hours every child spends 4
hours at our centre everyday. This time
is spent in reinforcing academic
concepts as well as in extra curricular
activities.
20 Confidential
o Teachers supplement the school
education and provide help with the
lessons.
o These teachers play a very important
role in giving the necessary support to
the children to keep them motivated.
o We also further build on their concepts
by promoting use of reference books
and workbooks in the library especially
for concepts in English, Maths &
Science.
21 Confidential
o This process involves supporting a child
through school, constantly evaluating
and upgrading the quality of education
being received by the child.
o The project also identifies the creative
potential of the child and helps in
channelling the strengths towards a
suitable career path.
22 Confidential
o To explore the creative potential within each
child and help channelise the child’s energies
in a positive way
o We at Vidya & Child believe that each child
has immense creative potential within, which
needs to be explored & channelised.
o The process of exposure to an art form is of
great importance.
o Exposure to any form of creativity expands a
child’s vision, inculcates a sense of discipline
and helps him dream.
o It’s a time where every child dreams, creates
and above all celebrates.
23 Confidential
o Every single child has demonstrated that he or she is
capable of amazing creativity.
o There are children who have been with us for many years,
children who have grown with us, amongst them we have
beautiful painters, writers, singers, dancers… they are
children brimming with enthusiasm and confidence.
o They have set an example for the community and are
motivating more children to come forward and be
educated.
o Each child’s insatiable energy, determination to succeed
and ever smiling faces drives us to improve on our inputs
and reinforces our beliefs to keeping moving ahead and
explore each child’s individual capabilities.
o Children who have been exposed to different art forms
for more than 3 years or so have turned out to be very
keen learners and very confident performers.
24 Confidential
o Children as part of this programme
have the option to learn Kathak, Tabla,
Vocal Music, Theatre, Art and Craft and
Pottery.
o The engagement of each child in these
Art Forms is very process oriented.
o The interactions take place by being
sensitive to a child’s need, to develop
focus within and work on group
dynamics.
25 Confidential
o Professionals trained in various Arts &
Performing Arts are an integral part of this
programme.
o They come to the centre and train the
children in respective fields of interest.
o The teachers associated with our program
themselves have trained under renowned
gurus and have been imparting training to
several students in Delhi since many years.
o The teachers who teach our children make
sure that the children not only learn the
skill but also enjoy these classes.
26 Confidential
o Our interactions with parents are planned
with the following objectives:
o Once a month all parents are given feedback
on their child’s performance as per the
academic evaluations. The individual teachers
also discuss behavioural issues with the
parents.
o The parents are encouraged continuously to
further increase their support towards their
child’s education. They are constantly urged
towards building a vision for the future where
the child can study and improve on her
chances of a livelihood.
27 Confidential
o We conduct workshops, every two months, for all the
parents especially whose children are studying in formal
schools or are to be introduced to the formal schooling
system in the near future.
o The parents need to provide a very strong support base at
home so that the child can continue with studies and
make future plans.
o We stress on the idea that parents are to visualize not the
immediate generation but the coming two generations.
o If their children are educated the coming generations will
definitely have access to better opportunities.
o Individual discussions are taken up with parents where
problem issues exist so that solutions can be explored.
28 Confidential
o Issues relating to health, cleanliness,
conflicts between the child and parent are
also taken up.
o We discuss on the quality of food intake
required, which need not add to the
financial burden of the parents.
o Importance on the food being cooked on
time, the boy child also being made to
work at home is stressed upon.
o This has become very important, as the
girl child does not get sufficient time to
study as compared to her brother because
of the work at home.
29 Confidential
o Interventions are also done when conflicts
between the child and the parents start
disturbing the atmosphere at home and
affect the performance of the child.
o In most cases the parents are unable to
understand their children who are in their
adolescence and exhibit behaviour, which
they are not able to comprehend and deal
with.
o Our focus is to build a strong long term
relationship between the Child, the Parent
and Vidya & Child.
30 Confidential
o Volunteers are an integral part of Vidya & Child.
o They have supported us through their belief in our
objectives, giving constant support and
encouragement to our children and being there
whole heartedly in all our programmes and activities
every step of the way.
o Individuals who joined as volunteers giving 1-2 hours
per day are now full time active board members of
Vidya & Child.
o All our 100 school going children today know how to
use the internet, work on power point and know
logo programming.
o A 3 year coordinated volunteer interaction over
weekends helped us achieve this.
31 Confidential
o A large team of highly motivated volunteers
come every weekend to teach children at
Vidya & Child.
o Children who are in Classes VIII to XII look
forward to these classes of Maths, Physics and
Chemistry.
o If children have been able to successfully
complete school education it is because
volunteers have painstakingly worked on
strengthening the academic concepts of these
children for them to do well in exams.
o Our first set of internally developed
workbooks for Class I to IV was developed
through volunteer effort.
32 Confidential
o Children learned Art & Craft for over a
year from a professional and helped in
making our exhibition of December 2006 a
huge success.
o Children learnt Art for 3 years every
Saturday in an Art Gallery and showcased
their talent at Hotel Ashoka, New Delhi for
two consecutive years.
o Our annual children’s newsletter,
appropriately titled ‘Utsaah” is the result
of a single-handed effort by a volunteer
who spends only 45 minutes per day, 3
days a week.
33 Confidential
o Most of the excursions and field trips that our children have
ever been to, the various historical monuments that our
children have seen and been exposed to has been because every
year consistently volunteers have organised them for our
children to give them more exposure and knowledge.
o Vidya & Child started in July 1998 with a small classroom in a
low income colony. Over the years it has to depend on local
landlords for more classroom space and the ever increasing
rental costs are a huge financial burden.
o To help us to reach out to more children, volunteers from
Cadence raised funds for a facility which Vidya & Child can call
its own.
o Land of 350 square yards has been purchased. The possibility of
actually owning a facility of our own where plans can be made
independently for ensuring quality education has made every
teacher and child of Vidya & Child extremely happy and
enthusiastic.

Vidya & Child Profile

  • 2. o Vidya & Child works with the mission to help bridge the gap for those children who need education and have no access to the facilities for learning existing in our society. o It started in July 1998 to work toward providing a learning environment which can lead to a strong educational foundation as well as help a child in identifying the uniqueness within. 2 Confidential
  • 3. o Socio-economic conditions and prevalent mindsets make it impossible for a vast majority of children to go to school. o The child is hardly exposed to any form of learning and therefore the personality of the child does not grow. As the child grows in age the earning potential remains the same as that of the parent. The cycle repeats itself generation after generation. 3 Confidential
  • 4. o The belief that every child is capable of greatness is the driving force which provides a platform wherein every child is given the freedom to explore and take decisions for a meaningful life ahead. o Each year their performance, enthusiasm and increased confidence reinforces our belief towards their inherent capabilities and aptitude for excellence. o It is indeed unfortunate that a large majority of children in India are denied this opportunity and have no hope to learn and take advantage of the ever increasing progress made by mankind. 4 Confidential
  • 5. o Vidya & Child started with 2 children and now works with over 700 children across 4 locations through its non formal and after school support centres. o There are over 100 children who have been mainstreamed into formal schools and 11 children have finished Class XII and are all pursuing higher studies. o These children belong to socio-economically marginalised sections of society, majority of them have parents who are illiterate/ semi- literate and work as domestic servants, industrial workers, rickshaw-pullers, street vendors, plumbers and carpenters. 5 Confidential
  • 6. o Over the last eleven years we have been able to connect with the parents so that they now send their daughters to study and learn. o When we started, many girls who came to us were either school dropouts or had only studied in their village and not continued with their studies after their parents moved to Noida. As a result many of the children who enrolled with us were highly overaged. However their keenness to learn and conviction to study with much smaller children was in itself a huge learning experience for us. o Continuous interaction with parents has ensured that now many enrol their daughters with us at an early age. 6 Confidential
  • 7. o Each child’s insatiable energy, determination to succeed and ever smiling faces drives us to improve on our inputs and reinforces our beliefs: o Every child has a right to be educated o Every child has capabilities that need to be explored and channelised o Every child dreams and yearns to learn, to make a place for himself in society o We in Vidya & Child can through our small support help them explore their talents to translate into an improved and meaningful life. 7 Confidential
  • 8. o To develop a creative learning environment for children and help them merge with the mainstream of society o Vidya & Child is an opportunity wherein children are initiated into an academic environment and an equally strong creative learning process. o Children who have been a part of this process are beautiful painters, kathak dancers, tabla players, can set up their own magic show, tattoo artists as well as children who excel in Maths, Science and Languages. o We strive for a holistic educational environment where academic excellence is as important as recognising ones strengths within. o We strive to provide a positive atmosphere where every child has the opportunity to explore, create and focus on their talents. 8 Confidential
  • 9. o Education at Vidya & Child involves mainstreaming children into schools for them to complete school education. o This crucial step is a platform from where children can then decide career paths and aspire for higher studies. o It enables a child to access the vast opportunities of higher learning that are otherwise impossible to reach. o Vidya & Child strengthens the child to compete in the mainstream world and to utilise the potential within. 9 Confidential

This time is spent in reinforcing academic concepts as well as in extra curricular activities. 20 Confidential
  • 21. o Teachers supplement the school education and provide help with the lessons. o These teachers play a very important role in giving the necessary support to the children to keep them motivated. o We also further build on their concepts by promoting use of reference books and workbooks in the library especially for concepts in English, Maths & Science. 21 Confidential
  • 22. o This process involves supporting a child through school, constantly evaluating and upgrading the quality of education being received by the child. o The project also identifies the creative potential of the child and helps in channelling the strengths towards a suitable career path. 22 Confidential
