The First Hydroelectric
Plants
The first hydroelectric power
scheme was invented in 1878,
when William Armstrong was able
to power an arc lamp at his Nor-
thumberland art gallery. The first
hydroelectric power station for
commercial use launched in 1881,
near Niagara Falls at the Schoe-
lkopf station. The Vulcan Street
Plant, which was the first Edison
hydroelectric power station, began
operation in Wisconsin in 1882.
The technology spread rapidly and
by 1889 there were approximately
200 hydroelectric plants across the
United States.

White Coal
Hydroelectric power became
known as white coal by the early
twentieth century. By 1920, some
40% of the total electricity output of
the United States came from hydro-
electric sources. Today, 49% of re-
newable energy created in the Unit-
ed States comes from hydropower.
Two new hydroelectric
complexes are currently
under construction in
Russia as part of a project
to address challenges to
the shipping industry.
