Nikolai Gogol (1809-1852)
Nikolai Gogol is often referred to as the first
great Russian novelist. Gogol wrote short
stories and plays as well as novels and
was best known for his romantic style with
strains of the grotesque and elements of
surrealism. In his later writings he focused
on satirising Russian political corruption.
Anton Chekov (1860-1904)
Anton Chekov is noted in history as one of
the all-time greatest short fiction writers.
Chekov’s work focused mainly on plays and
short stories, with plays including The Cher-
ry Orchard and Uncle Vanya to his credit.
Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821-1881)
The writings of Fyodor Dostoevsky include
the novels The Idiot, Crime and Punish-
ment and The Brothers Karamazov. Critics
acclaim Dostoevsky as one of literature’s
greatest psychologists and he is widely re-
garded as one of the most influential novel-
ists from the time known as Russia’s Gold-
en Age of Literature.
