with the course of an illness, the meaning of
a diagnosis, and the consequences of
medical treatment, reporting of symptoms,
expectations for how health care will be
delivered, and beliefs concerning
medication and treatments.
In addition, culture specific values
influence patient roles and expectations,
how much information about illness and
treatment is desired, how death and dying
will be managed, bereavement patterns,
gender and family roles, and processes for
decision making.

From 2008, we started a project to developed a European model of intercultural education
for nurses , which cover related areas such as cultural communication, cultural
competence, compassionate care, patient safety and was extended to other healthcare
professionals.

Running head: THE TRANSCULTURAL NURSING CARE THEORY 1 THE TRANSCULTURAL NURSING CARE THEORY 8 The Transcultural Nursing Care Theory of Madeline Leininger Student’s name Instructor Course Date Transcultural Nursing Theory Articule #1 Leininger, M. (1994). Quality of life from a transcultural nursing perspective. Nursing Science Quarterly, 7(1), 22-28. Leininger explains her belief in this article that the quality of life is derived from her theory of culture care diversity and universality. She tries to demonstrate how medical attendants should adopt a transcultural nursing perception in improving the quality of life as compared to how it has been perceived in most of the traditional and patterned descriptions. She talks about the five cultures that she says when appropriately incorporated in nursing care, a more advanced discipline and profession of culturally constituted care patterns will be attained. These cultures include: Mexican Americans, Philippine Americans, Anglo-Americans, Gadsup of New Guinea and Native North Americans. The article delved more on universality rather than diversity (p 26). It is complex when one tries to understand the quality of life, and thus, different approaches of culturally patterned care are used to describe the conditions and expressions of humans. The symbolic, expression and meaning referents in most cases are influenced by diversity in humans. According to Leininger, the quality of life should be understood from an inside culturally patterned establishment in order for the results to be accurate and reliable (p 28). The underlying challenge existing in nursing practice is to help health care providers distinguish and identify the inside and outside patterned expressions and meanings linked with the quality of life to help nurses make sound treatment decisions, behaviors and counseling. In summary, the article revealed that the quality of life is in a large part described by culturally patterned and articulated through our way of living as well as the prevailing cultural ideas. Leininger concludes by stating that, what determines the quality of life is not universal. However, further research is needed to validate and understand more the meaning of quality of life. Caring for a Bedouin female patient with breast cancer: An application of Leininger’s theory of culture care diversity and universality. Global Journal of Medicine and Public Health, 2(3), 1-6. In this article, the transcultural cultural theory as developed by Madeleine Leininger shows how patient care should be administered based on one’s practices, values, and cultural beliefs. Madeleine Leininger presents her arguments in this article using a clinical encounter that relates to her transcultural nursing care theory of a Bedouin woman client who is being assessed, diagnosed and treated for malignant growth (p 4). To formulate a plan of care for a culturally diverse population and develop a resource for the healthcare team in providing culturally competent care. DATA SOURCES. Books, journal articles. DATA SYNTHESIS. Healthcare workers are challenged to provide appropriate care for an increasingly diverse population. A cluster of nursing diagnoses were used to develop a plan of care addressing the unique challenges of caring for a diverse population served by a community hospital. CONCLUSION. A care plan was devised and inserted into the nursing diagnosis�based nursing documentation computer system for easy access when needed. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS. A care plan for a diverse population can promote respectful and excellent care for every patient. Discussion 1 (Lindsay) Module 1 Discussion Cultural competence is having the capability to effectively interact with individuals belonging to different cultures. Being culturally competent is essential in the nursing profession. Specifically, because advanced practice nurses (APN) care for many different cultural groups in the community. Cultural competence plays a significant role in eliminating and decreasing health care disparities. Therefore, APNs must have the ability to communicate appropriately with different cultural backgrounds to effectively treat patient’s health concerns in a manner that is acceptable to the patient. The Purnell model defines culture as behavioral patterns, beliefs, values, lifestyles, and all other factors that influence the human work and thought characteristics of a group of people that guide their worldview and decision making (Purnell, 2005). The Purnell model was a framework designed to use across all disciples and practice settings to assess different cultures. Every healthcare discipline values communication and must know their patients ethnocultural beliefs. Healthcare providers are more effective in caring for patients when they understand ethnocultural diversity. The model is a circle with three rims, the outlying rim represents global society, a second rim representing community, a third rim representing family, and the inner rim representing the person (Purnell, 2005). The interior of the circle is split into 12 parts representing cultural domains and their concepts. The 12 cultural domains construct the framework of the model. The Purnell model was developed for multiple purposes. These include providing a framework to learn concepts and characteristics of culture; define instances that affect an individual’s worldview; provide a tool that links the most significant relationships of culture; interrelate characteristics of culture that promote congruence to deliver sensitive and competent care; provide a structure for analyzing cultural data; and view individuals, families, and communities within their unique ethnocultural environment (Purnell, 2005). Communicating in a culturally sensitive way can minimize prejudices and biases. Culturally competent communication means communicating with mindfulness and knowledge of health disparities and understanding that sociocultural influences have important effects on beliefs, behaviors, and the skills used to manage these factors appropriately (Taylor & Lurie, 2004). It is also important to recognize and understand different communication needs and styles. For example, identifying patient language preferences, literacy levels, and level of English proficiency. Promoting culturally competent communication in the health care setting reflects high quality care and a holistic approach. Good patient-provider communication is associated with increased adherence to treatment plans, higher patient satisfaction, and improved health outcomes (Taylor & Lurie, 2004). ...

Regular training on cultural competence is recommended as it is considered a threat to patients (Kaihlanen, Hietapakka & Heponiemi, 2019). This paper will look at nursing from different sociology perspectives to demonstrate the need for training. Health literacy from sociological perspectives Functionalist perspective Health concepts are shared among a group of people sharing in other aspects of life as well. This is a source of continuity in identity recognized from doing things in a certain way. This is well demonstrated in Mayhew (2018), where an initial visit to a health facility, the nurse provides treatment options, which is met by indecisiveness, which turns around on the second visit following consultation with family members on the best course of action (Mayhew, 2018) for the ailing family member. The consultation gives the young mother confidence and a sense of unity in the family due to their collectivist approach. The institution of marriage is revered as well as nursing, as the mother takes time to understand all that pertains to the provided options. Conflict perspective Cultural diversity presents different approaches to decision making on health issues. Despite expert knowledge, a nurse must operate under ethical codes by respecting the patient's autonomy. This means that the decision reached, and failure thereof, must be upheld. For instance, a magico- religious culture may bar ailing members from procuring blood transfusions, even though their condition may only be helped by one. A nurse, while offering this option to them, can only do so much but respect this culture. Conflict may also arise when actions taken in an emergency situation, maybe in opposition to patient beliefs, such as first aid to the opposite sex. Symbolic interactionism perspective This perspective demonstrates the difference in dialects and jargon used by different societies. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and the National League for Nursing (NLN) have developed toolkits that provide nurse educators with models and teaching strategies to facilitate student learning in cultural competency. However, the concept of cultural competency varies as does the best method for integrating and evaluating cultural competency in undergraduate nursing curriculum. With the growing number of diverse clients, it is imperative that nursing students deliver culturally competent care. This article explores the current view of the concept of cultural competency from the standpoint of nursing education and the methods used to evaluate cultural competency in undergraduate nursing education programs. Keywords: cultural competency, simulation, undergraduate nursing education, cultural awareness, cultural humility Background and Significance Health care is increasingly complex, diverse, and growing in the United States. The United States Census Bureau (2009) predicts that the U.S. population of non-European Caucasians will be equivalent to Caucasian Americans by 2050. According to Healthy People 2020, there are significant health disparities among minority groups. A fundamental goal of Healthy People 2020 is to eliminate health disparities for all groups (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services [USDHHS]). The need for culturally competent health care is essential to reduce health disparities and ensure positive health outcomes. The National League for Nursing (NLN) and American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) include culturally appropriate care in their accreditation standards and have developed toolkits for nurse educators to assist with incorporating cultural competency in undergraduate nursing curricula (NLN, 2009; AACN, 2008). There is, however, no consensus in the literature regarding effective ways to teach cultural competency to undergraduate baccalaureate nursing students. Most nursing programs in the United States include the concept and skill of cultural competency as a program outcome and attempt to integrate cultural competency into their curricula. Attempts at integration have been reported as inadequate in developing culturally competent nurses (Brennan & Cotter, 2008). As the diversity of the population increases, so too must the cultural competency of nurses in practice. 4. Cultural difference, stereotype, stigma and discrimination

5. Cultural differences affect patients‘ attitudes about medical care and their ability to understand, manage, and cope with the course of an illness, the meaning of a diagnosis, and the consequences of medical treatment, reporting of symptoms, expectations for how health care will be delivered, and beliefs concerning medication and treatments. In addition, culture specific values influence patient roles and expectations, how much information about illness and treatment is desired, how death and dying will be managed, bereavement patterns, gender and family roles, and processes for decision making.

6. From 2008, we started a project to developed a European model of intercultural education for nurses , which cover related areas such as cultural communication, cultural competence, compassionate care, patient safety and was extended to other healthcare professionals.
