Work behavior

Work behavior is the behavior one uses in employment and is normally more formal than other types
of human behavior. This varies from profession to profession, as some are far more casual than others. For
example, a computer programmer would usually have far more leeway in their work behavior than a lawyer.
People are usually more careful than outside of work in how they behave around their colleagues, as many
actions intended to be in jest can be perceived as inappropriate or even harassment in the work environment.
In some cases, men may take considerably more care so as not to be perceived as being sexually
harassing than they would ordinarily.
Counterproductive work behavior[edit]
Counterproductive work behavior is also a type of work behavior. Most of the people do not know what
counterproductive work behavior is.[1]
Even people do not recognize this behavior, it seems normal to them.
Here are some examples in order to understand what counterproductive behavior is:
1. When someone is ignoring people at work.
2. When people work slowly and the work needs to be done fast.
3. When people refuse to help their colleagues.
4. When people refuse to accept a task.
5. When people show less interest in their work.
6. When people show destructive behavior against their colleagues.
7. When people do not appreciate their colleague's success.
These are the examples of counterproductive behavior that people confront in their daily life.

Positive Work Behaviors:
8 Straightforward Tips For Moving Up The
Corporate Ladder
Positive work behaviors is by far one of the most straightforward tips I can give you
when it comes tomoving up the corporate ladder. Do you sometimes feel that
whenever people speak about moving up the corporate ladder, it almost always has a
cunning undertone?
For career newbies especially, my recommendation is to always focus on
positive work behaviors that you can start practicing now. When the time comes,
moving up the corporate ladder will seem effortless. This is because you do what is
right and focus on the positive. Bosses will notice and when the right time comes,
the promotionyou want is just a natural next step.
So what are the 8 straightforward positive work behaviors for moving up the
corporate ladder?
1. Ideas
Regardless of how junior you are in an organization, you can have ideas that
positively affect the company. Do not be contented with just doing your own work.
Do not be shy or embarrassed about sharing them either. What’s the worst that can
happen? They laugh at it and reject the idea? Well, then you turn it into something
positive. Ask why can’t it work, and you would have learned something new. That
information can be used to come out with better ideas.
2. Impact
Be smart enough to choose some projects in a year that are considered a challenge
for your level of experience. Be hardworkingenough to see it through. But have the
wisdom to cross check with your bosses to make sure it is a challenge and not
impossible for your experience. That way you can create an impact in the company.
This positive work behavior ensures that you aren’t just the average worker
clocking in and clocking out without making an impression.
3. Impeccable
This positive work behavior is to be flawless in your language and dressing. Know
that you are judged at all times. First impression or not, people judge you on how
you talk and what you wear. You are lucky if you work in a company with dress
codes, then just dress up or down accordingly. Being impeccable when it comes to
dressing doesn’t mean expensive clothes. It simply means to dress well. Being
impeccable with your language doesn’t mean using bombastic words. Quite simply,
it means abstaining from vulgarity.
4. Independent
Learn to work independently. In the age of empowerment, most employees are
given the freedom to fail. Even if this culture is not practiced in your company,
learn to work with minimal supervision. When you can work independently, it allows
your boss to concentrate on other things. But remember to always update your
boss on what and how you are doing. Working independently as part of positive
work behaviors will help you in moving up the corporate ladder.
5. Ignite
Be an ignition of your company. Take the initiative to start something. It does not
always have to be work oriented. It can be something fun or informal. For example,
if you know some of your colleagues enjoy exploring different restaurants, why not
start a group that does it after work Fridays? When you are a positive ignition, you
can move up the corporate ladder quickly.
6. Interest
Show interest in your company’s initiatives. Be an interested party in things
involving your department. Some career newbies I know come across as being
cynical with initiatives that are being carried out by the company. As part of
positive work behaviors, showinterest in these initiatives. Give it a chance and
support them. Do not send signals that your bosses see you as being merely
contented as being a passenger of the company. That doesn’t help in your plan of
moving up the corporate ladder.
7. Intangible
Do not always focus on the tangible benefits when working. There are a lot of
values in doing things that at the moment does not seem to benefit you. For
example, helping a colleague on a project. Volunteering to cover for someone who’s
sick. Taking on an extra project when your boss seems inundated with work.
Positive work behaviors like these may not have immediate tangible benefits but in
the long run, helps you in moving up the corporate ladder.
8. Integrity
This positive work behavior means to have a sound moral character. Practiced at its
most basic level for a career newbies, it can be as simple as not talking bad about a
colleague andgossiping. Do not be drawn into wrong doings like cutting corners. Be
honest in your dealings with colleagues, clients, business partners and suppliers.
These positive work behaviors are straightforward and simple to practice. You need
not have an evil plan when thinking about moving up the corporate ladder. Cliché as
it maybe, the cunning plans makes you fall off the corporate ladder faster than you
can climb it.

What Are Work Values
Throughout your life you acquired a set of values — beliefs and ideas that are important to you. For example you may believe
that one should always be honest or that one must always be a loyal friend. You live your life according to this set of values. In
order to have a happy, successful and fulfilling life, you must act upon your values, both in your personal life and at work.
Taking your values into account when you choose a career could be the most important factor that determines whether you will
or won't be satisfied with that aspect of your life.
Clarifying your work values, that subset of values that relate to your career, is essential. Your work values are both intrinsic,
relating to the actual tasks involved in practicing a particular occupation, and extrinsic, relating to the by-products of an
occupation. An intrinsic value might be helping others, while an example of an extrinsic value is earning a lot of money.
How to Identify Work Values
Career development professionals, including career counselors and career development facilitators, use work value inventories to
measure how important various work values are to you. Generally, a work value inventory is simply a list of values that you are
asked to rate. For example, the instructions may tell you to rate each value on a scale of one to 10, giving a one to those values
that are most important to you and a 10 to those that are least important. Alternatively, you may be asked to list a series of work
values in order of importance.
The results of a work value inventory are used to identify appropriate career choices, by matching an individual's work values
with characteristics of occupations. A work value inventory is best used in conjunction with otherself assessment instruments that
help identify one's personality, interests and skills.
Examples and Definitions of Work Values
Here are examples of items that could appear on a work value inventory, along with a definition of each one. When reading this
list, think about how important each value is to you.
Autonomy: receiving no or little supervision
Helping Others: providing assistance to individuals or groups
Prestige: having high standing
Job Security: a high probability that one will remain employed
Collaboration: working with others
Helping Society: contributing to the betterment of the world
Recognition: receiving attention for your work
Compensation: receiving adequate pay
Achievement: doing work that yields results
Utilizing Your Skills and Background: using your education and work experience to do your job
Leadership: supervising/managing others
Creativity: using your own ideas
Variety: doing different activities
Challenge: performing tasks that are difficult
Leisure: having adequate time away from work
Recognition: receiving credit for achievements
Artistic Expression: expressing one's artistic talents
Influence: having the ability to affect people's opinions and ideas

1. Developing a Positive Work Attitude Darwin B. Rivers
2. INTRODUCTION:• Where negativity exists in a workplace, people are
quick to blame each other and feel a sense of injustice. With a negative
attitude, you are less likely to be accountable and reliable.• A positive
attitude will enable you to take risks, innovate, communicate, have
confidence and create a better workplace. This means you are more
productive and achieve more.
3. OBJECTIVES:• Define What is an Attitude?• Define What is a Work
Attitude?• Define What does Positive Work Attitude means?• Learn the
Different Positive Work Attitude Equations• Describe How to Develop a
Positive Work Attitude• Know the Importance of having a Positive Work
Attitude• Benefits of having a Positive Work Attitude• Achieving a Positive
Work Attitude
4. ATTITUDE• What is an Attitude?• An attitude is a favorable or
unfavorable evaluation of something. Attitudes are generally positive or
negative views of a person, place, thing, or event - this is often referred to
as the attitude object. People can also be conflicted or ambivalent toward
an object, meaning that they simultaneously possess both positive and
negative attitudes toward the item in question. (Wikipedia)• Carl Gustav
Jung – a well known psychiatrist and founder of analytical psychology
defines attitude as a "readiness of the psyche to act or react in a certain
way“ (Chapter XI of Psychological Types)
5. TYPES OF ATTITUDESWithin Jung‟s broad definition he defines
several attitudes.3.Consciousness and the Unconscious - The "presence of
two attitudes is extremelyfrequent, one conscious and the other
unconscious. This means that consciousness hasa constellation of
contents different from that of the unconscious, a duality particularlyevident
in neurosis" (Jung, [1921] 1971: par. 687).2. Extraversion and introversion
-This pair is so elementary to Jungs theory of typesthat he labeled them
the "attitude-types".3. Rational and Irrational attitudes. "I conceive reason
as an attitude" (Jung, [1921]1971: par. 785).
6. ATTITUDE• The rational attitude subdivides into the thinking and feeling
psychological functions, each with its attitude.• The irrational attitude
subdivides into the sensing and intuition psychological functions, each with
its attitude. "There is thus a typical thinking, feeling, sensation, and intuitive
attitude" (Jung, [1921] 1971: par. 691).4. Individual and social attitudes.
Many of the latter are "isms“5. Abstract attitude – IT is a type of cognitive
functioning that includes assuming a mental set voluntarily; shifting
voluntarily from a specific aspect of a situation to the general; keeping in
mind simultaneously various aspects of a situation; grasping the essentials
of a whole, and breaking it into its parts and isolating them voluntarily;
planning ahead ideationally; and/or thinking or performing symbolically.
7. ATTITUDE• A characteristic of many psychiatric disorders is the
person‟s inability to assume the abstract attitude or to shift readily from the
concrete to the abstract and back again as demanded by circumstances.6.
Concretism – It means a peculiarity of thinking and feeling which is the
antithesis of abstraction” (Jung, [1921] 1971: par. 696).• For example: "I
hate his attitude for being Sarcastic."
8. WORK ATTITUDES: TWO TYPES1. Work Attitude Behavior•WAB
refers to the „feel‟ part of your work.It relates to how you feel about your
workand your approach towards work. Hence, work attitude behavior is
intangible. Youcannot see it. Your colleagues cannot seeit. But people can
feel it. People whom youwork with can feel your work
attitudebehavior.•Your Colleagues “knows” it if you carryout your tasks with
pride. They can feelwhether you belief in your work or not. They know if you
have passion in yourwork.
9. WORK ATTITUDES: TWO TYPES2. Work Behavior Attitude•WBA
refers to the „do‟ part of your work.It relates to how you do your work and
howyou get your work done. Work behaviorattitude can be seen. It is the
actual work. You can see the result of your workbehavior attitude be it a
report or a finishedgood. Your colleagues can see it. It is theaction.•They
can see if you worked hard. Theycan see if you do your work with skills
andapplied the knowledge you know into thework. They can see for
themselves if youare the "all talk and no work" type.
10. WORK ATTITUDES•Work attitudes are also the feelings we have
toward different aspects of thework environment. Job satisfaction and
organizational commitment are two keyattitudes that are the most relevant
to important outcomes.•In addition to personality and fit with the
organization, work attitudes areinfluenced by the characteristics of the job,
perceptions of organizational justiceand the psychological contract,
relationships with coworkers and managers, and the stress levels
experienced on the job. Positive Quotes: "I found that the men and women
who got to the top were those who did the jobs they had in hand, with
everything they had of energy and enthusiasm and hard work." -Harry S.
Truman
11. FACT:• Institutions such as Gallup or the Society for Human Resource
Management (SHRM) periodically conduct studies of job satisfaction to
track how satisfied employees are at work.• According to a recent Gallup
survey, 90% of the employees surveyed said that they were at least
somewhat satisfied with their jobs. A recent SHRM study revealed 40%
who were very satisfied.
12. QUESTION:• Have you recently had a bad day?• How could that day
been better?• Has another person‟s bad day had a reflection on your day?•
How would a person having a bad day effect the attitude of a work place?
13. POSITIVE WORK ATTITUDE• What is a Positive Work Attitude?A
“positive work attitude" is an attitude about working. It is often used to refer
to someone who has positive outlook and behavior at work. It also refers to
someone possessing good work values and ethics in the work place.
14. POSITIVE WORK ATTITUDE EQUATIONS• 1. Pride and
Skills/KnowledgePride as a positive attitude in the workplace is taken to
mean self-dignity. It means the realization that everything you do has your
personal signature on it. When you realize this, you give everything
assigned to you your best shot. However, there is a danger here. That
danger is excessive pride without the necessary skills and knowledge is
arrogance.So, Pride – Skills/Knowledge = ArroganceThis equation of
positive attitude in the workplace has to go hand in hand. It has to be in
good balance. What about doing your work with just skills and knowledge
and with no pride? Well, you end up with mediocre work. You get it right
but it wouldn‟t be the best. Is this your attitude in the workplace?
15. POSITIVE WORK ATTITUDE EQUATIONSHence, Skills/Knowledge –
Pride = Mediocre WorkWhen you add this set of positive attitudes in the
workplace together, pride andskills/knowledge – what do you get?•Pride +
Skills/Knowledge = The Best Work Each Time2. Passion and
DirectionPassion as a positive attitude in the workplace is the burning
desire and love for the workthat you do, which will pull you through the
tough times. It is an intense enthusiasm thatall things worth doing are
worth doing well.
16. POSITIVE WORK ATTITUDE EQUATIONSHowever, like the previous
set of positive attitudes in the workplace it needs to bebalanced by another
factor - Direction. Your enthusiasm and burning desire must beharnessed
to focus on the objectives at hand for it to show positive results.
Passionwithout direction would just mean wasted energy.•Passion –
Direction = Wasted Energy•What about Direction without Passion? Well,
what if you know where you want to go butdo not have the fuel for it? It just
means success takes longer to achieve, if ever.•Direction – Passion =
Success Takes Far Longer, If Ever When you add direction andpassion as
positive attitude in the workplace you get goals galore!•Passion + Direction
= Goals Galore
17. POSITIVE WORK ATTITUDE EQUATIONS• 3. Belief and Action• My
last equation of positive attitude in the workplace involves belief and action.
The more your personal belief is aligned to the organization you are
attached to the better your chances for career success. A deep believe in
yourself will create the vigor and force that fuels your journey of seeking
career success.• This belief must be balanced with action. Action means
making your plans work. It means doing. Working. A believe that is not
backed by a plan of action is just fantasies.
18. POSITIVE WORK ATTITUDE EQUATIONS• Belief – Action =
Fantasies• What if you work your plans without a belief? Anyone without
believe in themselves and their dreams but continue to work their plans is a
fool at work.• Action – Belief = Fool at Work• When you are able to
synergize believe and action into one, your dreams come true!• Belief +
Action = Dreams Come True
19. FACT• In the world of work, employers not only look at your ability to
apply your technical skills & knowledge effectively on the job, they also
look at your attitude at work.• Positive attitudes in the workplace are
recognized and valued by employers.• Developing positive attitude at work
can determine how successful you are in your career.
20. HOW TO DEVELOP POSITIVE WORK ATTITUDES• A positive
attitude does not pop into your mind by itself. How you feel is a decision
you make every day. If you don‟t automatically feel upbeat, look around
and find something to feel good about. Aim: Start out each day in a positive
way. SMILE!!!• Use a clock radio that plays music that is soft and pleasant
to wake up to. Don‟t use a loud alarm clock.• Allow yourself enough time to
prepare for the day‟s activities at a civilized pace. Don‟t get up at the last
possible moment. Source: Dr. Wolf J. Rinke, author of Make It A Winning
Life: Success Strategies For Life, Love And Business.
21. HOW TO DEVELOP POSITIVE WORK ATTITUDES• Think about the
positive things you expect to accomplish today. Don‟t listen to news of the
world‟s problems or worry about your own problems while you are
dressing.• Eat a healthy breakfast. Don‟t drug yourself with coffee or
cigarettes.• Discuss your plans for the day with your partner. Don‟t bury
your face in the newspaper.• Each day, find some positive feature about
your partner and compliment him/her on it.• As you go about your day‟s
activities, always expect the best. Source: Dr. Wolf J. Rinke, author of
Make It A Winning Life: Success Strategies For Life, Love And Business.

that a healthier and more successful than those positive attitude can result

relationships - leading to greater success at work and at home.
23. IMPORTANCE OF POSITIVE WORK ATTITUDEA Positive Work
Attitude leads to:•Resilience•Optimism•Confidence•Creativity•Conflict
Resolution•Emotional Intelligence•Achievement Drives•Motivation•Focus
Positive Quotes: “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an
optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” ~ Winston Churchill
24. BENEFITS OF POSITIVE WORK ATTITUDE• 1. Less stressTo begin
with, it‟s healthier for you and everyone around you. More and more
studies are showing that stress can bring about a host of physical and
mental problems, from insomnia, fatigue, and loss of concentration to more
serious ailments like severe depression, bodily aches and pains,
hypertension (high blood pressure), digestive disorders (as severe as
ulcers), and even heart attack and stroke. You need to nip it in the bud now
to avoid both short- and long-term side effects
25. BENEFITS OF POSITIVE WORK ATTITUDE• 2. Happy peersYour
stress level will certainly effect those around you, whether you are so
scattered that you can‟t organize your thoughts enough to send a coherent
email, or you lash out in anger and frustration at a startled (and
undeserving) co-worker. Improving your disposition will have a ripple effect
that positively influences everyone you come in contact with
26. BENEFITS OF POSITIVE WORK ATTITUDE• 3. Job securityA bad
attitude (and subsequent side effects) can get you fired, so take it down a
notch, take a deep breath, and take a break before you go off the deep end
(and into the abyss). An employee who gets the ball rolling and keeps
everyone on track is a much better asset.
27. BENEFITS OF POSITIVE WORK ATTITUDE• 4. BoundariesHaving a
positive attitude is not only necessary for your health (and job stability), it is
also required to enjoy life. But you will have to take steps to get to your
happy place. You may not have the career you dreamed of. Most of us
don‟t end up doing what we want, or even what we plan, but you can‟t
focus on the negative. Keep in mind that you work to make money. Nothing
more, nothing less. You are not obligated to do anything other than provide
the services for which you were hired, so setting your limits may help you
to keep an even keel in the workplace.
28. BENEFITS OF POSITIVE WORK ATTITUDE• 5. EmpowermentDon‟t
let the man get you down. There will certainly be times when you‟ll have to
deal with tasks you don‟t enjoy, ridiculous deadlines and demands, and
rude co-workers or managers. An excellent way is to empower yourself by
saying no. If you are unable or unwilling to perform a task, simply say no.
It‟s not easy, but it will make you feel pretty good.
29. BENEFITS OF POSITIVE WORK ATTITUDE• 6. ControlYou control
your life, your path, and your decisions (including, often, how you feel). So
don‟t be afraid to leave your job and look for something better. As for
difficulties with others in your office, try to be rational and forthright. A lot of
people are willing to meet standards of behavior if you let them know their
actions are inappropriate. And there‟s always the HR department if all else
fails.• Source: Breana Orland is a writer for Grants for College.

30. A Positive Attitude Tip about Work:• Keeping a positive work attitude
can be one of the most challenging things you do. Especially, when you
are impacted by negative influences in the workplace. One of the ways to
keep your attitude positive is to think of your work as your business. If it
was your business and more importantly your money that was being put
into the workplace how would you act, what would you do to make the
workplace, the product or service better.
31. SUMMARY• A positive work attitude creates an opportunity for
advancement and success in your professional career, because it helps
you appreciate your job/role in the company/organization where you
belong.• Having a positive attitude makes you a valuable asset to the
company in terms of both performance and attitude, which is likely to
spread to others. Positive Quotes: "You dont have to be great to start, but
you have to start to be great." {Zig Ziglar}

Work behavior

  • 1. Work behavior From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia This article needs additional citations for verification. Please help improve this article byadding citations to reliable sources. Unsourced material may be challenged and removed.(November 2009) Work behavior is the behavior one uses in employment and is normally more formal than other types of human behavior. This varies from profession to profession, as some are far more casual than others. For example, a computer programmer would usually have far more leeway in their work behavior than a lawyer. People are usually more careful than outside of work in how they behave around their colleagues, as many actions intended to be in jest can be perceived as inappropriate or even harassment in the work environment. In some cases, men may take considerably more care so as not to be perceived as being sexually harassing than they would ordinarily. Counterproductive work behavior[edit] Counterproductive work behavior is also a type of work behavior. Most of the people do not know what counterproductive work behavior is.[1] Even people do not recognize this behavior, it seems normal to them. Here are some examples in order to understand what counterproductive behavior is: 1. References[edit] 1. ^ Alexa, Adrian F (2010), What Is Counterproductive Work Behaviour? • 2. Positive Work Behaviors: 8 Straightforward Tips For Moving Up The Corporate Ladder Positive work behaviors is by far one of the most straightforward tips I can give you when it comes tomoving up the corporate ladder. Do you sometimes feel that whenever people speak about moving up the corporate ladder, it almost always has a cunning undertone? For career newbies especially, my recommendation is to always focus on positive work behaviors that you can start practicing now. When the time comes, moving up the corporate ladder will seem effortless. This is because you do what is right and focus on the positive. Bosses will notice and when the right time comes, the promotionyou want is just a natural next step. So what are the 8 straightforward positive work behaviors for moving up the corporate ladder? 1. Ideas Regardless of how junior you are in an organization, you can have ideas that positively affect the company. Do not be contented with just doing your own work. Do not be shy or embarrassed about sharing them either. What’s the worst that can happen? They laugh at it and reject the idea? Well, then you turn it into something positive. Ask why can’t it work, and you would have learned something new. That information can be used to come out with better ideas. 2. Impact Be smart enough to choose some projects in a year that are considered a challenge for your level of experience. Be hardworkingenough to see it through. But have the wisdom to cross check with your bosses to make sure it is a challenge and not impossible for your experience. That way you can create an impact in the company. This positive work behavior ensures that you aren’t just the average worker clocking in and clocking out without making an impression. 3. Impeccable This positive work behavior is to be flawless in your language and dressing. Know that you are judged at all times. First impression or not, people judge you on how you talk and what you wear. You are lucky if you work in a company with dress codes, then just dress up or down accordingly. Being impeccable when it comes to dressing doesn’t mean expensive clothes. It simply means to dress well. Being impeccable with your language doesn’t mean using bombastic words. Quite simply, it means abstaining from vulgarity. 4. Independent Learn to work independently. In the age of empowerment, most employees are given the freedom to fail. Even if this culture is not practiced in your company, learn to work with minimal supervision. When you can work independently, it allows your boss to concentrate on other things. But remember to always update your boss on what and how you are doing. Working independently as part of positive work behaviors will help you in moving up the corporate ladder. 5. Ignite Be an ignition of your company. Take the initiative to start something. It does not always have to be work oriented. It can be something fun or informal. For example, if you know some of your colleagues enjoy exploring different restaurants, why not start a group that does it after work Fridays? When you are a positive ignition, you can move up the corporate ladder quickly. 6. Interest
  • 3. Show interest in your company’s initiatives. Be an interested party in things involving your department. Some career newbies I know come across as being cynical with initiatives that are being carried out by the company. As part of positive work behaviors, showinterest in these initiatives. Give it a chance and support them. Do not send signals that your bosses see you as being merely contented as being a passenger of the company. That doesn’t help in your plan of moving up the corporate ladder. 7. Intangible Do not always focus on the tangible benefits when working. There are a lot of values in doing things that at the moment does not seem to benefit you. For example, helping a colleague on a project. Volunteering to cover for someone who’s sick. Taking on an extra project when your boss seems inundated with work. Positive work behaviors like these may not have immediate tangible benefits but in the long run, helps you in moving up the corporate ladder. 8. Integrity This positive work behavior means to have a sound moral character. • 5. 6. Interest Show interest in your company’s initiatives. Be an interested party in things involving your department. Some career newbies I know come across as being cynical with initiatives that are being carried out by the company. As part of positive work behaviors, showinterest in these initiatives. Give it a chance and support them. Do not send signals
  • 6. that your bosses see you as being merely contented as being a passenger of the company. Practiced at its most basic level for a career newbies, it can be as simple as not talking bad about a colleague andgossiping. Do not be drawn into wrong doings like cutting corners. Be honest in your dealings with colleagues, clients, business partners and suppliers. These positive work behaviors are straightforward and simple to practice. For example you may believe that one should always be honest or that one must always be a loyal friend. You live your life according to this set of values. In order to have a happy, successful and fulfilling life, you must act upon your values, both in your personal life and at work. Taking your values into account when you choose a career could be the most important factor that determines whether you will or won't be satisfied with that aspect of your life. Clarifying your work values, that subset of values that relate to your career, is essential. Your work values are both intrinsic, relating to the actual tasks involved in practicing a particular occupation, and extrinsic, relating to the by-products of an occupation. An intrinsic value might be helping others, while an example of an extrinsic value is earning a lot of money. How to Identify Work Values Career development professionals, including career counselors and career development facilitators, use work value inventories to measure how important various work values are to you. Generally, a work value inventory is simply a list of values that you are asked to rate. For example, the instructions may tell you to rate each value on a scale of one to 10, giving a one to those values that are most important to you and a 10 to those that are least important. Alternatively, you may be asked to list a series of work values in order of importance. The results of a work value inventory are used to identify appropriate career choices, by matching an individual's work values with characteristics of occupations. A work value inventory is best used in conjunction with otherself assessment instruments that help identify one's personality, interests and skills. Examples and Definitions of Work Values Here are examples of items that could appear on a work value inventory, along with a definition of each one. When reading this list, think about how important each value is to you. Autonomy: receiving no or little supervision Helping Others: providing assistance to individuals or groups Prestige: having high standing Job Security: a high probability that one will remain employed Collaboration: working with others Helping Society: contributing to the betterment of the world Recognition: receiving attention for your work Compensation: receiving adequate pay Achievement: doing work that yields results

This means you are more productive and achieve more. 3. OBJECTIVES:• Define What is an Attitude?• Define What is a Work Attitude?• Define What does Positive Work Attitude means?• Learn the Different Positive Work Attitude Equations• Describe How to Develop a Positive Work Attitude• Know the Importance of having a Positive Work Attitude• Benefits of having a Positive Work Attitude• Achieving a Positive Work Attitude
  • 13. 4. ATTITUDE• What is an Attitude?• An attitude is a favorable or unfavorable evaluation of something. Attitudes are generally positive or negative views of a person, place, thing, or event - this is often referred to as the attitude object. People can also be conflicted or ambivalent toward an object, meaning that they simultaneously possess both positive and negative attitudes toward the item in question. (Wikipedia)• Carl Gustav Jung – a well known psychiatrist and founder of analytical psychology defines attitude as a "readiness of the psyche to act or react in a certain way“ (Chapter XI of Psychological Types) 5. TYPES OF ATTITUDESWithin Jung‟s broad definition he defines several attitudes.3.Consciousness and the Unconscious - The "presence of two attitudes is extremelyfrequent, one conscious and the other unconscious. This means that consciousness hasa constellation of contents different from that of the unconscious, a duality particularlyevident in neurosis" (Jung, [1921] 1971: par. 687).2. Extraversion and introversion -This pair is so elementary to Jungs theory of typesthat he labeled them the "attitude-types".3. Rational and Irrational attitudes. "I conceive reason as an attitude" (Jung, [1921]1971: par. 785). 6. ATTITUDE• The rational attitude subdivides into the thinking and feeling psychological functions, each with its attitude.• The irrational attitude subdivides into the sensing and intuition psychological functions, each with its attitude. "There is thus a typical thinking, feeling, sensation, and intuitive attitude" (Jung, [1921] 1971: par. 691).4. Individual and social attitudes. Many of the latter are "isms“5. Abstract attitude – IT is a type of cognitive functioning that includes assuming a mental set voluntarily; shifting voluntarily from a specific aspect of a situation to the general; keeping in mind simultaneously various aspects of a situation; grasping the essentials of a whole, and breaking it into its parts and isolating them voluntarily; planning ahead ideationally; and/or thinking or performing symbolically. 7. ATTITUDE• A characteristic of many psychiatric disorders is the person‟s inability to assume the abstract attitude or to shift readily from the concrete to the abstract and back again as demanded by circumstances.6. Concretism – It means a peculiarity of thinking and feeling which is the antithesis of abstraction” (Jung, [1921] 1971: par. 696).• For example: "I hate his attitude for being Sarcastic."
  • 14. 8. WORK ATTITUDES: TWO TYPES1. Work Attitude Behavior•WAB refers to the „feel‟ part of your work.It relates to how you feel about your workand your approach towards work. Hence, work attitude behavior is intangible. Youcannot see it. Your colleagues cannot seeit. But people can feel it. People whom youwork with can feel your work attitudebehavior.•Your Colleagues “knows” it if you carryout your tasks with pride. They can feelwhether you belief in your work or not. They know if you have passion in yourwork. 9. WORK ATTITUDES: TWO TYPES2. Work Behavior Attitude•WBA refers to the „do‟ part of your work.It relates to how you do your work and howyou get your work done. Work behaviorattitude can be seen. It is the actual work. You can see the result of your workbehavior attitude be it a report or a finishedgood. Your colleagues can see it. It is theaction.•They can see if you worked hard. Theycan see if you do your work with skills andapplied the knowledge you know into thework. They can see for themselves if youare the "all talk and no work" type. 10. WORK ATTITUDES•Work attitudes are also the feelings we have toward different aspects of thework environment. Job satisfaction and organizational commitment are two keyattitudes that are the most relevant to important outcomes.•In addition to personality and fit with the organization, work attitudes areinfluenced by the characteristics of the job, perceptions of organizational justiceand the psychological contract, relationships with coworkers and managers, and the stress levels experienced on the job. Positive Quotes: "I found that the men and women who got to the top were those who did the jobs they had in hand, with everything they had of energy and enthusiasm and hard work." -Harry S. Truman 11. FACT:• Institutions such as Gallup or the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) periodically conduct studies of job satisfaction to track how satisfied employees are at work.• According to a recent Gallup survey, 90% of the employees surveyed said that they were at least somewhat satisfied with their jobs. A recent SHRM study revealed 40% who were very satisfied. 12. QUESTION:• Have you recently had a bad day?• How could that day been better?• Has another person‟s bad day had a reflection on your day?• How would a person having a bad day effect the attitude of a work place?
  • 15. 13. POSITIVE WORK ATTITUDE• What is a Positive Work Attitude?A “positive work attitude" is an attitude about working. It is often used to refer to someone who has positive outlook and behavior at work. It also refers to someone possessing good work values and ethics in the work place. 14. POSITIVE WORK ATTITUDE EQUATIONS• 1. Pride and Skills/KnowledgePride as a positive attitude in the workplace is taken to mean self-dignity. It means the realization that everything you do has your personal signature on it. When you realize this, you give everything assigned to you your best shot. However, there is a danger here. That danger is excessive pride without the necessary skills and knowledge is arrogance. So, Pride – Skills/Knowledge = ArroganceThis equation of positive attitude in the workplace has to go hand in hand. It has to be in good balance. What about doing your work with just skills and knowledge and with no pride? Well, you end up with mediocre work. You get it right but it wouldn‟t be the best. Is this your attitude in the workplace? 15. POSITIVE WORK ATTITUDE EQUATIONSHence, Skills/Knowledge – Pride = Mediocre WorkWhen you add this set of positive attitudes in the workplace together, pride andskills/knowledge – what do you get?•Pride + Skills/Knowledge = The Best Work Each Time2. Passion and DirectionPassion as a positive attitude in the workplace is the burning desire and love for the workthat you do, which will pull you through the tough times. It is an intense enthusiasm thatall things worth doing are worth doing well. 16. POSITIVE WORK ATTITUDE EQUATIONSHowever, like the previous set of positive attitudes in the workplace it needs to bebalanced by another factor - Direction. Your enthusiasm and burning desire must beharnessed to focus on the objectives at hand for it to show positive results. Passionwithout direction would just mean wasted energy.•Passion – Direction = Wasted Energy•What about Direction without Passion? Well, what if you know where you want to go butdo not have the fuel for it? It just means success takes longer to achieve, if ever.•Direction – Passion = Success Takes Far Longer, If Ever When you add direction andpassion as positive attitude in the workplace you get goals galore!•Passion + Direction = Goals Galore 17. POSITIVE WORK ATTITUDE EQUATIONS• 3. Belief and Action• My last equation of positive attitude in the workplace involves belief and action.
  • 16. The more your personal belief is aligned to the organization you are attached to the better your chances for career success. A deep believe in yourself will create the vigor and force that fuels your journey of seeking career success.• This belief must be balanced with action. Action means making your plans work. It means doing. Working. A believe that is not backed by a plan of action is just fantasies. 18. POSITIVE WORK ATTITUDE EQUATIONS• Belief – Action = Fantasies• What if you work your plans without a belief? Anyone without believe in themselves and their dreams but continue to work their plans is a fool at work.• Action – Belief = Fool at Work• When you are able to synergize believe and action into one, your dreams come true!• Belief + Action = Dreams Come True 19. FACT• In the world of work, employers not only look at your ability to apply your technical skills & knowledge effectively on the job, they also look at your attitude at work.• Positive attitudes in the workplace are recognized and valued by employers.• Developing positive attitude at work can determine how successful you are in your career. 20. HOW TO DEVELOP POSITIVE WORK ATTITUDES• A positive attitude does not pop into your mind by itself. How you feel is a decision you make every day. If you don‟t automatically feel upbeat, look around and find something to feel good about. Aim: Start out each day in a positive way. SMILE!!!• Use a clock radio that plays music that is soft and pleasant to wake up to. Don‟t use a loud alarm clock.• Allow yourself enough time to prepare for the day‟s activities at a civilized pace. Don‟t get up at the last possible moment. Source: Dr. Wolf J. Rinke, author of Make It A Winning Life: Success Strategies For Life, Love And Business. 21. HOW TO DEVELOP POSITIVE WORK ATTITUDES• Think about the positive things you expect to accomplish today. Don‟t listen to news of the world‟s problems or worry about your own problems while you are dressing.• Eat a healthy breakfast. Don‟t drug yourself with coffee or cigarettes.• Discuss your plans for the day with your partner. Don‟t bury your face in the newspaper.• Each day, find some positive feature about your partner and compliment him/her on it.• As you go about your day‟s activities, always expect the best. IMPORTANCE OF POSITIVE WORK ATTITUDEA Positive Work Attitude leads to:•Resilience•Optimism•Confidence•Creativity•Conflict Resolution•Emotional Intelligence•Achievement Drives•Motivation•Focus Positive Quotes: “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” ~ Winston Churchill 24. BENEFITS OF POSITIVE WORK ATTITUDE• 1. Less stressTo begin with, it‟s healthier for you and everyone around you. More and more studies are showing that stress can bring about a host of physical and mental problems, from insomnia, fatigue, and loss of concentration to more serious ailments like severe depression, bodily aches and pains, hypertension (high blood pressure), digestive disorders (as severe as ulcers), and even heart attack and stroke. You need to nip it in the bud now to avoid both short- and long-term side effects 25. BENEFITS OF POSITIVE WORK ATTITUDE• 2. Happy peersYour stress level will certainly effect those around you, whether you are so scattered that you can‟t organize your thoughts enough to send a coherent email, or you lash out in anger and frustration at a startled (and undeserving) co-worker. Improving your disposition will have a ripple effect that positively influences everyone you come in contact with
  • 18. 26. BENEFITS OF POSITIVE WORK ATTITUDE• 3. Job securityA bad attitude (and subsequent side effects) can get you fired, so take it down a notch, take a deep breath, and take a break before you go off the deep end (and into the abyss). An employee who gets the ball rolling and keeps everyone on track is a much better asset. 27. BENEFITS OF POSITIVE WORK ATTITUDE• 4. BoundariesHaving a positive attitude is not only necessary for your health (and job stability), it is also required to enjoy life. But you will have to take steps to get to your happy place. You may not have the career you dreamed of. Most of us don‟t end up doing what we want, or even what we plan, but you can‟t focus on the negative. Keep in mind that you work to make money. Nothing more, nothing less. You are not obligated to do anything other than provide the services for which you were hired, so setting your limits may help you to keep an even keel in the workplace. 28. BENEFITS OF POSITIVE WORK ATTITUDE• 5. EmpowermentDon‟t let the man get you down. There will certainly be times when you‟ll have to deal with tasks you don‟t enjoy, ridiculous deadlines and demands, and rude co-workers or managers. An excellent way is to empower yourself by saying no. If you are unable or unwilling to perform a task, simply say no. It‟s not easy, but it will make you feel pretty good. 29. BENEFITS OF POSITIVE WORK ATTITUDE• 6. ControlYou control your life, your path, and your decisions (including, often, how you feel). So don‟t be afraid to leave your job and look for something better. As for difficulties with others in your office, try to be rational and forthright. A lot of people are willing to meet standards of behavior if you let them know their actions are inappropriate. And there‟s always the HR department if all else fails.• Source: Breana Orland is a writer for Grants for College. (www.collegegrant.net) 30. A Positive Attitude Tip about Work:• Keeping a positive work attitude can be one of the most challenging things you do. Especially, when you are impacted by negative influences in the workplace. One of the ways to keep your attitude positive is to think of your work as your business. If it was your business and more importantly your money that was being put into the workplace how would you act, what would you do to make the workplace, the product or service better.
  • 19. 31. SUMMARY• A positive work attitude creates an opportunity for advancement and success in your professional career, because it helps you appreciate your job/role in the company/organization where you belong.• Having a positive attitude makes you a valuable asset to the company in terms of both performance and attitude, which is likely to spread to others.
