3. Pleven is located in the central part of Moesia /
Danube Valley / equidistant from the Danube and the
Balkan Mountains. It is the administrative center of the
North West . The town is located 160 km from the
capital Sofia. The population is 106 000 people.

Pleven has an ancient history - the end of the 5th
millennium BC . Numerous archaeological findings are evidence of
the high material and spiritual culture of the Thracians , who
inhabited the region thousands of years .
At the beginning of the new era these lands became part of
the Roman Empire. On the road from Oescus to Philippopolis in
today Pleven the Roman road station Storgozia and later castle of
the same name . Archaeological studies talk about the massive
construction of administrative, military and religious buildings. One
of the most valuable archaeological monuments is the early
Christian basilica from the 4th century , the second largest in
Bulgaria after the royal basilica in Pliska.
