In this paper, a self-attention based neural network architecture to address human activity recognition is proposed. The dataset used was collected using smartphone. The contribution of this paper is using a multi-layer multi-head self-attention neural network architecture for human activity recognition and compared to two strong baseline architectures, which are convolutional neural network (CNN) and long-short term network (LSTM). The dropout rate, positional encoding and scaling factor are also been investigated to find the best model. The results show that proposed model achieves a test accuracy of 91.75%, which is a comparable result when compared to both the baseline models.

The increasing criminal activities in the current world has drawn lot of interest activity recognition techniques which helps to perform the sophistical analytical operations on human activity and also helps to interface the human and computer interactions. From the existing review analysis it is found that most of the existing systems are not emphasize on computational performance but are more application specific by identifying specific problems. Hence, it is found that all the features are not required for accurate and cost effective human activity detection. Thus, the human skelton action can be considered and presented a simple and accurate process to identify the significant joints only. From the outcomes it is found that the proposed system is cost effective and computational efficient activity recognition technique for human actions.

An Efficient Activity Detection System based on Skeleton Joints Identification

In recent times, fitness trackers and smartphones equipped with different sensors like gyroscopes, accelerometers, global positioning system sensors and programs are used for recognizing human activities. In this paper, the results collected from these devices are used to design a system that can assist an application in monitoring a person’s health. The proposed system takes the raw sensor signals as input, preprocesses it and using machine learning techniques outputs the state of the user with minimum error. The objective of this paper is to compare the performance of different algorithms logistic regression (LR), support vector machine (SVM), k-nearest neighbor (k-NN) and random forest (RF). The algorithms are trained and tested with an original number of features as well as with transformed number of features (using linear discriminant analysis). The data with a smaller number of features is then used to visualize the high dimensional data. In this paper, each data point is mapped in the high dimensional data to two-dimensional data using t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding technique. Overall, the first high dimensional data is visualized and compared with model’s performance with different algorithms and different number of coordinates.

The spectacular growth of wearable sensors has provided a key contribution to the field of human activity recognition. Due to its effective and versatile usage and application in various fields such as smart homes and medical areas, human activity recognition has always been an appealing research topic in artificial intelligence. From this perspective, there are a lot of existing works that make use of accelerometer and gyroscope sensor data for recognizing human activities. This paper presents a comparative study of ensemble learning methods for human activity recognition. The methods include random forest, adaptive boosting, gradient boosting, extreme gradient boosting, and light gradient boosting machine (LightGBM). Among the ensemble learning methods in comparison, light gradient boosting machine and random forest demonstrate the best performance. The experimental results revealed that light gradient boosting machine yields the highest accuracy of 94.50% on UCI-HAR dataset and 100% on single accelerometer dataset while random forest records the highest accuracy of 93.41% on motion sense dataset.

The adoption of the occupancy sensors has become an inevitable in commercial and non-commercial security devices, owing to their proficiency in the energy management. It has been found that the usages of conventional sensors is shrouded with operational problems, hence the use of the Doppler radar offers better mitigation of such problems. However, the usage of Doppler radar towards occupancy sensing in existing system is found to be very much in infancy stage. Moreover, the performance of monitoring using Doppler radar is yet to be improved more. Therefore, this paper introduces a simplified framework for enriching the event sensing performance by efficient selection of minimal robust attributes using Doppler radar. Adoption of analytical methodology has been carried out to find that different machine learning approaches could be further used for improving the accuracy performance for the feature that has been extracted in the proposed system of occuancy system.

We verify the hypothesis that Microsoft’s Kinect device is tailored for defining more efficient interaction compared to the commodity mouse device in the context of information visualization. For this goal, we used Kinect during interaction design and evaluation considering an application on information visualization (over agrometeorological, cars, and flowers datasets). The devices were tested over a visualization technique based on clouds of points (multidimensional projection) that can be manipulated by rotation, scaling, and translation. The design was carried according to technique Participatory Design (ISO 13407) and the evaluation answered to a vast set of Usability Tests. In the tests, the users reported high satisfaction scores (easiness and preference) but, also, they signed out with low efficiency scores (time and precision). In the specific context of a multidimensional-projection visualization, our conclusion is that, in respect to user acceptance, Kinect is a device adequate for natural interaction; but, for desktop-based production, it still cannot compete with the traditional long-term mouse design.

In this paper, Viterbi algorithm based on a hidden Markov model is applied to recognize activity sequences from observed sensors events. Alternative features selections of time feature values of sensors events and activity length size feature values are tested, respectively, and then the results of activity sequences recognition performances of Viterbi algorithm are evaluated. The results show that the selection of larger time feature values of sensor events and/or smaller activity length size feature values will generate relatively better results on the activity sequences recognition performances.

This work discusses the application of an Artificial Intelligence technique called data extraction and a process-based ontology in constructing experimental qualitative models for video retrieval and detection. We present a framework architecture that uses multimodality features as the knowledge representation scheme to model the behaviors of a number of human actions in the video scenes. The main focus of this paper placed on the design of two main components (model classifier and inference engine) for a tool abbreviated as VASD (Video Action Scene Detector) for retrieving and detecting human actions from video scenes. The discussion starts by presenting the workflow of the retrieving and detection process and the automated model classifier construction logic. We then move on to demonstrate how the constructed classifiers can be used with multimodality features for detecting human actions. Finally, behavioral explanation manifestation is discussed. The simulator is implemented in bilingual; Math Lab and C++ are at the backend supplying data and theories while Java handles all front-end GUI and action pattern updating. To compare the usefulness of the proposed framework, several experiments were conducted and the results were obtained by using visual features only (77.89% for precision; 72.10% for recall), audio features only (62.52% for precision; 48.93% for recall) and combined audiovisual (90.35% for precision; 90.65% for recall).

Traditional motion capture (mocap) has been well - stud ied in visual science for the last decades . However the fie ld is mostly about capturing precise animation to be used in specific application s after intensive post processing such as studying biomechanics or rigging models in movies. These data set s are normally captured in complex laboratory environments with sophisticated equipment thus making motion capture a field that is mostly exclusive to professional animators. In addition , obtrusive sensors must be attached to actors and calibrated within t he capturing system, resulting in limited and unnatural motion. In recent year the rise of computer vision and interactive entertainment opened the gate for a different type of motion capture which focuses on producing optical marker less or mechanical sens orless motion capture. Furtherm ore a wide array of low - cost device are released that are easy to use for less mission critical applications . This paper describe s a new technique of using multiple infrared devices to process data from multiple infrared sensors to enhance the flexibility and accuracy of the markerless mocap using commodity devices such as Kinect . The method involves analyzing each individual sensor data, decompose and rebuild them into a uniformed skeleton across all sensors. We then assign criteria to define the confidence level of captured signal from sensor. Each sensor operates on its own process and communicates through MPI. Our method emphasize s on the need of minimum calculation overhead for better real time performance while being able to maintain good scalability
