INTRODUCTION :
Geography is the study of places and the relationships between people and
their environments. While a geography teacher take class in geography, teacher
always bear in mind that fact that geography textbook is meant for students and not
for the teachers. A teacher cannot depend textbook for transacting the curriculum.
It is impossible or rather difficult for any one textbook is present to all the
information need to students to gain an understanding of topic. Therefore, teachers
must update and enrich the information by supplementing it with primary and
secondarysources. In addition to study the textbook and explanation for teachers to
supplement reading, we are using reference books. It gives more potential values to
education.
The workbooks which guide the students in solving the simplest cognitive
tasks. The workbooks are not used in every teaching areas and according the level
of development of the opinion of the students from the particular to the abstract.
CONTENT :
A textbook is a bookthat is basically prescribed by a particular institution or
government for a particular subject. Reference books are those that people use to
get extra information about what is already in the textbook or may be to generally
prefer a particular topic. Workbooks allow each of the kids to work at their own
pace at the times that work best for them.
WORKBOOKS
A bookbased on a textbook or courseof study, which contain exercises and
questions for use by students. The essential aim of the workbooks is that if they are
used properly, to create a natural period of thinking with the help of specific items
by using images to solve theoretical tasks. That is initial abstract thinking. The
workbooks in our educational practice in recent years often find application in the
3. educational process.Workbooksusually cover important concepts and tasks
related to syllabus. Workbooks are used for solving extra problems and concepts
which students have already studied from textbooks.
ADVANTAGES OF WORKBOOKS
Workbooks are often used in schools or younger students, either in middle
schoolor elementary school. They are favoured because students can work directly
in their books, eliminating the need for loose-leaf and copying questions from a
textbook.
Workbooks usually cover important concepts and tasks related to syllabus.
Workbooks are used for solving extra problems and concepts which students have
already studied from textbooks.
Workbooks also hold an advantage because they are usually smaller and
lighter than textbooks, which equates to less trouble when the student brings the
bookhome to complete their homework.
USES OF WORKBOOKS
 The workbooks are used while studying in the classroom.
 The workbooks are used for silent studying by the student.
 The workbooks are used for practicing the acquired knowledge at
home.
 The students use them while studying for a long time.
BENEFITSOF USING WORKBOOKS
Kids can work independently

REFERENCE BOOKS
A reference bookis one that may only be used in the library and may not be
borrowed from the library. Keeping reference books in the library assures that they
will always be available for use on demand. Reference books may be shelved in a
reference collection located separately from circulating items. On the other hand a
reference bookis usually consulted briefly to determine specific information.
Reference bookis a bookcontaining useful facts or specially organized
information as an encyclopaedia, dictionary, atlas, yearbook, etc. These are
designed for accessing specific facts or information and can take the form of
indexes, dictionaries, encyclopaedia, bibliographies, almanacs, directories,
handbooks etc. Reference books can have very important information related to
research. A large number of reference books are available electronically.
CHARACTERISTICS OF REFERENCEBOOKS
A reference bookis designed by its arrangement and treatment to serve
certain purpose. Some of the characteristics of reference books are:

 The information included in them is collected from a vast number of
sources.

 The arrangement of information is such that it can be conveniently

chronological or other methods.
 They include only the bird eye view of the topics and rarely deal them
in depth.
 They usually concentrate on facts.
 They are normally not issued on loan and kept for use in library only.
 Information in a reference bookis organized that anyone can easily
get their desired information.

ADVANTAGES OF REFERENCEBOOKS
 Usually written by parents.
 Good starting point if you know very little about a topic.
 Good for definitions of word or brief explanations of a topic.
6. DISADVANTAGES OF REFERENCEBOOKS
 Unlikely to contain the latest research
 Coverage of topics will be brief.
CONCLUSIONS
A good teacher can help us to becomea good human being in the society and good
citizen of the country. The fastest development of every nation is in the hands of a
teacher. The geography teacher should be equipped with the recent developments
in the subject. Reference bookis a prime vehicle for teaching which is used by
teachers. And the workbooks allow the students to work at their own pace at the
times that work best for them. So in education system, workbookand reference
bookplay an important vital role in day by day.
