Salary Information
The information provided in this document constitutes a guide to salaries being paid against
particular job titles/functions at the time the guide was published. The figures shown are in €000 ad
£000 per anum. The guide provides an indication against each listed job, of how little, how much and
the average we have seen being paid to such individuals coming onto our database within the
preceding 6 months. It is not a formal survey and does not detail variances between sectors,
company size or industry. These variances can be inferred from salary spreads e.g. in general terms
an MIS manager in a very small company may be earning towards the lower end of the scale whereas
the same role in a huge multinational corporation may attract much more in the way of salaries and
benefits. The titles would be the same.

36. Benefits THE WAY WORK CAN BE
A member of the Group
Of increasing importance in recent times has been the provision of comprehensive benefits packages
to staff all companies as a means of attracting and retaining top talent.
The Standard
The industry standards in Ireland at present are full medical cover, (BUPA or VHI) participation in a
defined contribution pension scheme, (up to 15% of gross annual salary) Life Assurance (4 times
annual salary) and in many cases permanent health insurance.
In addition to these standard benefits, employers are increasingly seeking to reward high
performance with attractive bonus schemes which can range from 10% of salary to in some cases,
especially Financial Services, 100% of salary.
Educational assistance programmes exist in virtually all companies but there are many diverse ways
in which this can feature, from fully subsidising an educational programme to refunding fees on
successful completion of exams.
Cars and car allowances continue to be included as part of the overall benefits package for manager
level employees upward. Car allowances are generally preferred as increasingly punitive benefits
taxation filters through.
The Perks
Popular extras include contribution towards gym or golf membership, subsidised canteen,
free parking, and payment of membership few for professional bodies or associations.
Companies are also seeking to reward longevity of tenure with additional holiday entitlements
after on full year service.
Many employers also now offer a ‘refer a friend’ bonus to employees hired based on a
recommendation of an existing member of staff.
‘Signing on’ business have not been to the fore of late as stock options or equity participation
become more common.
In the digital age and the instant economy more and more employers pay for their employees’
mobile phones.
Stock Options
There has been a great deal of press covering the subject of stock options, share participation
schemes and equity arrangements as a method of attracting and retaining staff. These vary
enormously depending on the company and industry sector. Equity where possible is expected at
most executive levels nowadays although with the increasingly changeable stock market conditions,
the attractiveness of stock options may well change over the course of 2002/3 onwards.
