OVERVIEW
• What is Wireless Power Transfer(WPT)?
• Why is WPT needed?
• History of WPT.
• Types of WPT.
• Advantages & Disadvantages.
• Applications.
• Conclusion.
WHAT IS WIRELESS POWER
TRANSFER
• Wireless power transfer (WPT),or
electromagnetic power transfer is
the transmission of electrical energy
from a power source to an electrical
load, without the use of discrete
human-made conductors.
• Wireless transmission is useful to
power electrical devices in cases
where interconnecting wires are
inconvenient, hazardous, or are not
possible.
WHY IS WPT NEEDED ?
• To reduce the losses in power transmission &
distribution.
• It is Reliable , Efficient and fast technology.
• Highly resonant wireless power transfer has
made our day to day product more efficient
and reliable.
• On average 400 die from
electrocution and 4,400 are injured each year
because of electric lines hazard.
• Total economic losses due to electric line hazards
are estimated to exceed $4 billion annually.
• The risk of having fault increases in Electric Lines.
PERCENTAGE Output Losses due to Transmission & Distribution lines.
HISTORY
• From the 1890s through
1906 Tesla spent great
deal in developing the
transmission of electrical
power without wires.
• In 1891 Tesla invented
TESLA COIL which was
the greatest invention for
wireless transmission.
• His vision is to
make Electrical
Transmission
Wireless.

Imagination leads to Innovation
TESLA COIL
• Inventor Nikola Tesla invented Tesla Coil in 1891.
• It works on the principle of Electromagnetic Induction.
• Wardenclyffe Tower was a huge tower made by tesla.
• This tower was actually a huge tesla coil.
• Through which Tesla could transmit Wireless Electricity.
INDUCTIVE COUPLING
• In Inductive Coupling (electromagnetic induction
or inductive power transfer, IPT), power is
transferred between coils of wire by a magnetic
field.
• It induces an alternating EMF (voltage) by
Faraday's law of induction, which creates an AC
current in the receiver.
• The fastest growing use is wireless charging pads
to recharge mobile and handheld wireless devices
such as laptop and tablet computers.
RESONANT INDUCTIVE COUPLING
• Resonant inductive coupling is a form of inductive coupling in
which power is transferred by magnetic fields (B) between two
resonant circuits (tuned circuits).
• Resonant circuits interact with each other with so much
intensity that stray magnetic fields doesn’t do any severe
effect in transmission.
• This technology can be used to power every electronic
item in our room e.g. fan , table lamp , T.V.
CAPACITOR COUPLING
• In capacitive coupling (electrostatic induction), energy
is transmitted by electric fields between electrodes
such as metal plates. The transmitter and receiver
electrodes form a capacitor, with the intervening
space as the dielectric.
• Capacitive coupling has only been used practically in
a few low power applications, because the very high
voltages on the electrodes required to transmit
significant power can cause unpleasant side effects
such as noxious ozone production
MAGNETO DYNAMIC COUPLING
• In this method, power is transmitted between two rotating
armatures, one in the transmitter and one in the receiver,
which rotate synchronously, coupled together by a magnetic
field generated by permanent magnets on the armatures.
• This device has been proposed as an alternative to
inductive power transfer for noncontact charging of electric
vehicles.
• Google is now using this wireless E.V charging technique
to charge their electric vehicles.
MICROWAVE
S• Power transmission via radio waves can be made
more directional, allowing longer distance power
beaming, with electromagnetic radiation, typically in
the microwave range.
• In World War II, the idea of using microwaves to
transfer power was researched and was used to
propelled miniature helicopter by microwave power.
• Power beaming using microwaves has been
proposed for the transmission of energy from
orbiting solar power satellites to Earth and the
beaming of power to spacecraft.
LIGHT WAVES
• In the case of electromagnetic radiation closer to the
visible region of the spectrum , power can be
transmitted by converting electricity into a laser
beam that is then pointed at a photovoltaic cell.
• Laser 'power beaming' technology was explored in
military weapons and aerospace applications. Also,
it is applied for powering of various kinds of sensors
in industrial environment.
ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGESADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES
ADVANTAGES
• Wireless Power Transmission system would
completely eliminates the existing high-tension power
transmission line cables, towers and sub-stations.
• Loss of transmission is negligible in the Wireless
Power Transmission. Therefore, the efficiency of this
method is much higher than the wired transmission.
• The power failure due to short circuit and fault on
cables would never exist in the transmission.
DISADVANTAGES
• The Capital Cost for practical implementation of WPT
seems to be very high.
• Long distance charging ,High current and voltage
charging are not supported & very fast charging is not
possible.
• The interference is seen in microwave wireless
transmission with present communication systems.
APPLICATION
S
•Charging of Electric Hybrid Cars.
•Wireless Mobile Charging.
•Wireless Electricity Transfer.
•More Efficient power transfer for Offices , Industries.
•Entire office buildings will run on wireless electricity.
•Employees computers, cell phones, printers will all stay
charged throughout the business day.
•Electric appliances will not have to be placed around
power outlets , running cords is no longer a hassle.
Future Technology & Uses
• Haier America Digital Products group has already
developed a HDTV that transmits electricity and the
HD signal, making the TV completely wireless.
• Delphi Automotive is working with WiTricty to develop
a wireless charging system for electric cars. The
ground breaking technology will enable automotive
manufacturers to integrate wireless charging into the
design of hybrid and electric vehicles. This wireless
charging system would not use plugs or charging
cords.
CONCLUSION
• Wireless power Transfer is quickly
becoming a viable reality.
• This Technology offers an extremely
efficient alternative to previous
attempts at providing wireless power.
• Future improvements in wireless
technology offer world changing
implications.
