International Experience
Partners for Rural Health in the Dominican Republic
o Dec 31, 2010 - January 13, 2011
o July 13, 2012- July 24, 2012
In 2010 the trip afforded me the opportunity to travel as a University of Southern Maine BSN to
RN student to the Dominican Republic to fulfill a community health credit.
In 2012, I returned as a volunteer nurse provider upon my own volition. Moved by the initial
experience I returned in the role of provider.
The experience afforded provision of health care in an impoverished rural region. Educational
exposure included community health assessment, basic physical assessment, differential
diagnosis process, and community and individual education. Autonomy, problem solving,
innovative thinking and the ability to adapt quickly and frequently to challenging needs and
environments were required along with physical, mental and emotional stamina. I gained a
valuable perspective on culture, community, poverty, and global and individual responsibility.
