A presentation prepared by Reel Works in preparation for an Hive NYC's Project Learning Lab. This is a working document intended to share resources and get feedback on an ongoing project funded by The Hive Digital Media Learning Fund.
3. THE PARTNERSHIP
Reel Works and Urban Arts Partnership have
collaborated over the past year to fine-tune how
we teach media to young people. We continue
our work to develop a badging system that
represents a unique way to frame educational
competencies that students can easily take with
them into the real world.
4. HIVE NYC PROJECT LEARNING LAB
Our goals are:
● to create an open system for all organizations to use
● to extend this system to middle and high schools
● to obtain and increase buy-in from the film, media, and
TV industry to use badges as indicators of work-
readiness
5. WHAT IS BADGING?
Digital badges are a visual symbol of a
competency -- they signal to others what you
know and can do.
6. WHAT IS MEDIA BADGING?
We have developed and
implemented a new badge system
for our introductory filmmaking
workshops that consists of 6
learning modules that span the
filmmaking sequence -- from Idea
Formation to Exhibition.
KEY MODULES:
○ Storytelling
○ Camera
○ Editing
○ Sound
○ Production
○ Leadership

Research to Build and Present Knowledge
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.9-10.7
Conduct short as well as more sustained
research projects to answer a question
(including a self-generated question) or solve a
problem; narrow or broaden the inquiry when
appropriate; synthesize multiple sources on the
subject, demonstrating understanding of the
subject under investigation.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.9-10.8
Gather relevant information from multiple
authoritative print and digital sources, using
advanced searches effectively; assess the
usefulness of each source in answering the
research question; integrate information into
the text selectively to maintain the flow of
ideas, avoiding plagiarism and following a
standard format for citation.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.9-10.9
Draw evidence from literary or informational
texts to support analysis, reflection, and
research.
Creativity and Innovation - Think
Creatively; Use a wide range of idea
creation techniques (such as
brainstorming); Create new and
worthwhile ideas (both incremental and

filmmaking
Students demonstrate
responsible actions when caring
for technical equipment and in
keeping footage organized during
shoot by: labeling tapes as soon
as they are shot, replacing lens
caps when cameras are not in
use, rolling up cords, and keeping
equipment in cases when not in
use.

18. Staff Reflection on Badging:
“Badging allowed for reflection as we looked at
our curriculum to see holes that we had, in
terms of providing clear expectations and
benchmarks to measure those expectations.
That process of reflection really strengthened
the curriculum.” - Laurel Gwizdak, Education
Director
