- 2. The UCAS System • Central online applications service • The only method of entry to UK degree programmes • Can apply to up to five universities/courses with one application • Choice restrictions: – Medicine, Veterinary, Dentistry – max 4 choices – Oxford or Cambridge

Applying • 2014 entry will open on September 1st 2013 • The student must complete the following sections: • Personal Details • Additional Information (UK applicants only) • Student Finance • Choices • Education • Employment • Personal Statement • A member of staff at school / college must complete the reference

The UCAS Form • Personal statement – Your course choice will tell us that you want to study that subject, but not why – this is your chance! – Overall impression of the student – Most universities do not interview for many of their courses – Helps to persuade an admissions tutor to offer you a place

Leadership skills are essential for success in Business Management and lead to strong skills in project management, presentation, and managing other staff Psychology Action: I have volunteered at a primary school as a part-time classroom assistant for two years Benefit: Close regular contact with children over a reasonable period of time, classroom management, interaction with parents Course Relevance: Excellent for developmental psychology modules, child psychology, family issues, basic understanding of how some special needs affect the learning process. Could have sparked the passion for studying psychology
- 11. 2013 Entry Tuition Fees • Home/EU UG programmes are up to £9,000 a year – International students will have varying tuition fees – Varying fee for Professional Training Year, Year in Industry, Sandwich Year • NHS funded programmes do not incur tuition fees • www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/students

- 13. Helping you understand loans Students can take a ‘Tuition Fee Loan’ from Student Finance England regardless of household income The amount available is up to the level of fees The money will be paid directly to the university

Maintenance Grants Some students can receive a ‘Maintenance Grant’ •This is means tested, and is aimed at students from low income households • If your household income is up for £42,875 you may be entitled to a grant • The maximum available is £3,387 for household incomes of up to £25,000 a year •This is paid directly to the student’s bank account
- 17. Total Maintenance Support So how much financial support will students actually receive from Student Finance England? This depends upon whether you wish to have your household income assessed If you do, then it depends upon what the household income is
- 20. Student Loan Repayment 2013 • Current RPI is 3.1% (as of July 2013) • Any outstanding loan will be written off after 30 years No penalty for early repayment

University of Surrey Support in 2013 Sports Scholarship • • • • £3,000 per year plus free Surrey Sports Park membership: Max of £1,000 cash award Remainder to be used towards University services and Sports Performance Services tailored to your individual sporting needs. Open to all students meeting entry requirements and maintaining academic standards throughout studies: “Be an internationally recognised athlete in a sport that is recognised by BUCS, UK Sport and Sport England or be on a NGB performance pathway programme.”
