2. The Problem with Summer
• Summer means more down time, which
sometimes creates more opportunities for
children to get into trouble, especially when
parents aren’t around. About 70 percent of
school-aged children live in homes where
both parents work.
• Summer can also mean boredom, and a
bored child is a child who's more likely to
take risks to introduce excitement. Kids may
try things they wouldn't otherwise try, give
into peer pressure, or make new – and
potentially questionable – online friends so
they don't have to feel alone all summer.
3. Summer Digital Dangers
• Social networking sites
• Sexually-oriented websites
• Websites with privacy concerns
• Cyberbullying
• Meet-up sites
• Offensive websites
4. The Role of Technology
• In a world filled with cyber dangers, it's easy to
say to yourself, “I never had a cell phone or a
computer, and I turned out fine!”
• However, completely banning technology is not
only unfair; it's also unlikely to work, because
technology is everywhere and no parent can
supervise their child every minute of every day.
Instead, you'll have to get savvy about what you
do and don't allow.
5. Why Technology is Important
• Better spatial reasoning.
• Access to friends.
• Technology skills.
• Project opportunities and rapid-fire
learning.
• Accommodation of learning styles.
6. Striking a Balance
• Parents need to strike a balance between
banning technology altogether and giving
their children free access to whatever they
can find. During the summer months, this
can become more challenging, and parents
may need to enlist the assistance of parental
intelligence software such as uKnowkids.
• Basic parenting practices such as regular
communication, clear boundaries, and
adequate supervision can go a long way
toward bridging the gap between healthy use
of digital technologies and the digital danger
zones.
7. Technological Strategies for
Keeping Kids Safe
• Technological Monitoring
• We've all heard the expression, “Fight fire
with fire!” and parents can fight the
dangers of technology using technology
itself.
• Parental Intelligence
• Parental Intelligence programs can tell
you how your child is using digital
technology and, if there's a
problem, knowing how your child uses
technology can provide valuable insight
into why there's a problem.
8. • Parental Controls
• You can also block certain sites on
your home computer. Blocking
software allows you to select a list of
banned sites, or to plug in keywords
associated with the sorts of sites you
don't want your child to have access
to.
