Slums are densely populated urban areas characterized by substandard housing and lack of basic services like water, electricity, and sanitation. They are inhabited by very poor people and have informal or illegal housing structures made of scrap materials. Some of the largest slums are in Karachi, Pakistan; Nairobi, Kenya; and Mumbai, India, housing over a million people total. Governments have attempted to solve slum problems through redevelopment but this often displaces slum residents without recognizing their property rights.
