Example Of Naturalistic Observation
A. A naturalistic observation is a form of research that takes place in the participant's own
environment. This could be the participant's' workplace or a child's home. Another form of
observation that was also conducted was covert observations is an empirical research were the
participants don't know when they are being observed. Covert methods in general has always been
contentious, on the basis that you can mislead the participant of the study. However, they offer
access to information that would otherwise be nearly impossible. Regarding this, the subject that I've
decided to study was an biracial female that is athletic, roughly 5'7, dark colored hair, brown eyes,
ages between 16–17, and is a senior at Minnetonka High School. The specific behavior of interest
was the amount of socializing with classmates when teacher asks to share their views about the topic
in class.
B. Day 1: The subject look very disinterested at class. While the teacher was discussing about the
code of conduct in class regarding cell phones the subject was on her smartphone. The teacher made
us repeat the words to our classmates. She sat there and still proceeded to look at her phone. She
doesn't seem to be interested of the class. Day 2: Mr. teacher gives the students the first 5 minutes of
class to write in their journals. The teacher also gives the students prompts on the board if they don't

I spoke to L.C last night when she got home as discussed. I informed her that there are

Social Observation Paper
I decided for my social observation the mall would be a good place to start. I came there on a
Friday evening when there should be plenty of people to watch. I also sat in the Barnes and
Noble cafГ© after that to observe. I expected to see a lot of people shopping and conversing. A
few things did stand out to me within the few hours I was there. Some things I didn't expect to
see. We are expected to behave a certain way in public determined by our culture as to what is

The larger group was Dominated by all males, which is another thing I didn't expect. You would
think that the group would have at least one or two females in it, statistically speaking. The smaller
group was female dominated with two females and a single male in it. I observed the male and he
didn't seem to follow his gender role4. This made me think because I have a gay friend and
homosexual men seem to familiarize with females more easily than heterosexual males. Also I
noticed a trend that most gay men spent most of their time being raised by their mother with a more
distant or even non–existent father figure. It is probably not fair to make assumptions about the
lone male in the group, but I'm assuming he fits in this stereotype5. The other thing I noticed
about this group is that they all seemed to be equal; there wasn't one that put themselves before
the others. I also sat in the cafГ© at Barnes and Noble for a while and observed socialization and
interactions. The first people I noticed when I was sitting were a couple walking through the store.
The Female had her man by the hand, I noticed her hand was palm down, signifying authority, and
was leading him off somewhere, maybe she was in a hurry to get somewhere or had just caught him
eying another female. Either way she seemed to be the more dominant one in the relationship, which
does not correspond with gender roles

Sample Classroom Observation
I conducted my observations at the HUB, outside where the tables are located. I decided upon
this location due to its large size, alongside the fact that it is placed in a spot where most people
have to pass by while walking to class. Additionally, I decided to sit outside the HUB rather than
inside due to the fact that I would be exposed to more people, sounds, and smells; I would be out
in the open rather than a closed setting. Almost every UCR faculty member takes pride in

The biggest difference were the population size, drinks of choice, and noise level. The group of
people sitting outside the HUB decreased in size from Wednesday at noon to Friday at 10 am. I
deduce that this was due to the fact that maybe people were not on campus yet as they had later
classes, or most were in class already. Moreover, I noticed that people were mostly drinking water
during my observation period on Wednesday, whereas the overall drink of choice on Friday was
coffee. I presume this shift in drink choice was due to the change in time; people enjoy drinking
coffee in the mornings and/or it helps people reduce the groggy, tired feeling of waking up. The
noise level was the most drastic change. The HUB and its surroundings were boisterous and
lively during Wednesday at noon whereas the HUB fell a bit silent during Friday at 10 am. I
consider this change drastic as the decrease in noise level was outstandingly clear almost
immediately. I assume this was due to the fact that most people were still waking up and had not yet
summoned all energy. With these observations, I not only improved my observational skills,
however, I also realized how fortunate I am to attend a school that celebrates and encourages

I. CONTENT
My first thought about this subject was that it would be really fun and exciting because of the
subject's description, "Observational Child Study", where we can already experience actual child
observation. Fortunately, I was right. Our professor tackled amazing topics that really served as an
eyeopener. We encountered topics about the characteristics of some of the disabilities like autism,
attention deficit hyperactive disorder, learning disabilities, and also, developmental delays. We even

This subject disciplined me in making the task properly and passing it on time. I thought,
observing children would be a hard job to do but I was wrong. It was really interesting and fun
because I witnessed unusual behaviors and happy faces from children I've encountered that really
motivated me to do my very best to pursue my goals and achieve what I really wanted to do and that
is to really become a Special Education teacher. Honestly, I never thought of using checklists in

Each classroom observation I have completed has led to a more productive learning experience,
and I have been able to view teaching theories and strategy first hand. Through my classroom field
experience I have had several opportunities to help with different classroom activities such as work

The entire class, both 3rd and 4th grade do a quick review, then she separates the class. While Mrs.
Richards explicitly teaches new concepts to the 3rd graders, the 4th graders are completing
unfinished work from the day before. Once she has explicitly taught the new concept, guided the 3rd
graders through whole class practice, she introduces their independent practice, and then moves over
to begin the teaching cycle with the 4th grades. As Mrs. Richards worked with the 4th grades, I was
given the opportunity to assist the 3rd graders with any support they might need to successfully
finish their independent math work. If any 3rd grade student finished their math work before Mrs.
Richards was done with the 4th grade they move over to the computer center, where they worked
with the Lexia program. This rotation between grade levels continued throughout the day, except
when it came to science where both grade levels worked on the same lesson. Although Mrs. Richards'
class has a unique dynamic she still utilizes common teaching strategies such as gradually releasing
responsibility on to each student, allowing the students to communicate and support each other
during math, using hands on experiences during math and science, and employing the use of
manipulatives to help the students understand new math concepts.

If I am walking around my hometown and notice that half or more people are overweight, the way
that I would explain this observation is by focusing on the person's diet as it relates to the amount
of processed foods which consist of hormones and GMOs that the people consume every day out
of habit and social acceptance. If I were C. Wright Mills my analysis would differ in the
observation by not focusing on a single person's diet habits but on the public as a whole and how the

The school I went to visit was Public School 69. It was my little brothers elementary school. The

I learned the day before my visit, Miss Suzy threw a pizza party for the children. The day of my
visit they were going to make their own individual pizzas (I did not get to view that part of the
day). I noticed that during circle time, two children seemed uninterested had wandered off. Miss
Suzy did not do anything about it, she just let them be. I thought that was wrong of her because the
two children were not being involved. The children could of already known what they were
speaking about. If that was the case she should of given them some work to do. When circle time
was over, Miss Suzy asked each child which part of the room they wanted to play in. Students
chose dramatic play, arts and crafts, reading, and playing on the computer. Miss Suzy walked

Interview : Interview And Observation
In my interview/observation I chose 4 people. The interview included two women and two men. To
pick the people for my interview I put a survey out and picked random people who chose to do the
survey. The survey was presented by telephone and email . To select people I asked if any of my
friends would like to take place in a survey possibly leading to an interview. I picked from close
friends and family. The survey questions were: Do you smoke cigarettes? How long have you
smoked? How often do you smoke? Do you consider yourself addicted or a social smoker? Would
you like to quit? Have you ever tried? If yes, what happened? My first interviewee was a male 40
years of age who admitted to being a smoker of cigarettes since age 16 but didn't become addicted
until age 18. He stated he smokes 15 times a day. He stated he smokes less when at work due to lack
of breaks, but once in the comfort of his home he smokes over half a pack. When asked if he would
like to stop, he stated yes and has tried, but only lasted two days before he relapsed. He stated he
suffered withdrawals; On the1st day he wasoverly irritable, on 2nd day his head spun and he had a
rapid heartbeat, on the 3rd day he stated he was calm, and felt a bit weird and so he finally bought
cigarette.

Behavioral Observations Student Information Daisy was observed by the examiner on her PPCD
classroom. The students were about to transition to their physical education period. Daisy followed
the teacher directions to line–up with no hesitation. Before entering to the P.E. room, she started
crying for no reason apparently. After calming down she tried to follow the movements conversely
didn't look engaged. Daisy kept participating however when students were sitting down as part of

Results
The seemingly intimate couples observed were quite interesting. Instead of being seated opposite
each other, most couples chose to sit next to each other so as to be within closer proximity of one
another. The couples that did sit opposite each other spent much of their time bent over or leaning
across the table so as to whisper or talk in a more secretive and intimate manner with their partner.
The observed body language of these couples was that of an inclusive "please do not bother us"
attitude. Their behavior compared to the rest of the occupants in the restaurant was very subdued
and much more private. The amount of bodily contact was also much greater than in other groups of
participants. Other than their initial glances around the restaurant when they were first seated,
almost none of the couples made a habit of surveying the restaurant, as were observed quite
frequently with the other members of the study. Also noted was the tendency for the females within
the younger–adult relationships to take leave to the toilet almost as soon as the couple was seated.
In some cases, the male ordered the female's drink while she was still in the toilet. Almost always,
no matter the age of the couple, alcoholic beverages were preferred to order. During the meal the

She was friendly and well socialized. According to Erikson's stages of social and emotional
development this kind of behavior means that the girl was on the 'school age' stage. It is absolutely
normal to be on this stage of social and emotional development at the age of 9. After my observation
I came to the conclusion that the subject meets the milestones and stages for the physical, cognitive,
social, and emotional development. Judging from the drawing that the girl made we can assume that
the girl is gifted. According to my naturalistic observation there is nothing unusual in the
development of the girl. According to her age she is absolutely adequate. The observation was a very
interesting and informative process. It gave me the opportunity to apply different theories of
development. The biggest advantage of this psychological method is the opportunity to observe the
subject in the natural surrounding and watch his natural behavior. To sum up, during my naturalistic
observation I applied Piaget's theory of cognitive development and Erikson's theory of emotional and
social development. Both of these theories gave me the opportunity to understand the subject better.

On Sunday 07/24/16 at 0350 hours I was dispatched for a malicious mischief at 1301 31ST ST SE

Context of Observation
With her mother's permission, I observed my cousin's 33–month–old female daughter named Clara.
This observation occurred at my grandparents' house, who are Clara's great–grandparents. My
grandma frequently babysits Clara and her older and younger sisters, so she is familiar with the
house. It was Thanksgiving when I did the observation with Clara, so she was surrounded by a
combination of familiar faces as well as people that she infrequently sees. For example, I only see
her during major holidays due to the fact I now live out of state, and while she has interacted with
me, I am more or less a stranger to her due to the infrequent nature of our interactions. All of the
Oswald family members came to Thanksgiving this year, so my grandparents small house was
packed with many people. Additionally, it was constantly noisy in the small house, with lots of
different activities occurring throughout the day.

To begin with, one of the most interesting things I observed with Clara is how clearly her behavior
demonstrated a secure attachment with her parents. While my grandmother's home was a familiar
place to Clara, adding so many family members, and family members she did not know, made the
situation somewhat unfamiliar with her. It was interesting to see how she interacted with myself, my
mother, and my fiancГ©, all of us whom do not have much interaction with Clara, at the beginning
of Thanksgiving. When we tried to interact with her, she would stare suspiciously at us, and then run
to her parents or grandmother. When we tried to interact with her in her "secure base", she would
bury her head into the shoulder of whoever was holding her.
Eventually, the cycle of going back to the secure base and exploring got bigger and bigger. As she, I
assume, continued to get confirmation that the unfamiliar situation was safe, and her secure base
was there to protect her, she would feel more comfortable venturing out, exploring the house more,
and interacting with unfamiliar faces. She would check in with her parents, grandparents, or aunts
by sitting on their lap for a little while, but as the night went on, the duration between these
check–ins became longer, and they also became

Examples Of Group Observation
I did not observe a great deal of change the few times I sat in on class but there were some things
that were different from meeting to meeting. First, each meeting I observed there was a different
facilitator who lead the group. Second, the number of members fluctuated each class. One day
the group had nine members the next it had ten and the next it had eight. Third, the mood of the
group was different each time I observed. If it was a facilitator that they really liked and worked
close with daily they were upbeat and talkative but if it was a job coach they didn't really see daily

The group leaders approach to the group is very authoritative but not in a bad way. Since the
group members are adults that have disabilities that range from all over it is difficult to give them
much independence because of how off topic it can get. This group is an educational group
because of this, the group leader takes on a teacher role and approaches the members as an
educator. Most of the group leaders did a very good job at getting the members involved by
answering the worksheets as a class or by having the members repeat what was just said back to
class. These are really good skills to use when working with adults that have a disability because
some of them do not know how to read or write so this allows them to stay engaged and participate in
learning. Some of the group leaders struggled at keeping the members engaged and focused and a
lot of the time it was due to the topic difficulty being taught. Because the group members have such
a wide range of disabilities like some have autism, some have down syndrome, and some are just
intellectually delayed it is hard to teach on level that makes since to

teachers one is a teaching assistant and the other is the teacher of the room. There are 20 children
in the classroom with some students with special needs so in the morning the teacher gives 1/1
help on the side in the room on a table and some get pulled out with a special education teacher. The
