Essay on Critical Thinking/Reflection
Assessing both critical thinking and the reflection process in learning, these aspects are both
intertwined. Without one, you cannot have the other. With the use of critical thinking and reflection
this thought process allows us to analyse, assess, evaluate, learn and develop arguments. However
this can have a twofold affect in the learning process. The learning process means taking many
aspects and perspectives into account to establish an argument. Critical thinking draws on questions
such as: how, what, when, why and who to determine the quality of an argument and also the
credibility. Although without critical thinking a conclusion cannot be drawn. Barriers to critical
thinking must also be questioned, whether these are: doubt,...show more content...
(Cottrell, Stella, 2005) states "poor criticism can result from making judgment based on too general
an overview of the subject matter." When developing an argument one must be careful not to make
false or unfair assumptions and always look for alternative points of view. Doing this allows you to
analyse and evaluate and make a more informed decision about an argument. Arguments are about
reviewing, speculating and assessing. As a result of doing this, a line of reasoning can be established
and conclusions made. Barriers such as critiquing an argument can have a positive effect in critical
thinking and the learning process as it allows a person to question everything. One must also be
careful when developing an argument and using the critical thinking skills not to make
generalisations and jumping to a conclusion. Critical thinking is the skill of thinking about your own
thinking and perspectives.
Critical questioning is an important part of the critical thinking process. Questioning how, what,
when, why and who are all essential parts to evaluate and analyse a quality of an argument. By
doing this it allows deeper thought and allows you to find an argument. This is described through
(Dwyer, Judith, 2009) stating that critical thinking is: "purposeful, self–regulatory judgement that
occurs when an issue is raised, a problem needs to be solved, opinions are reconsidered or
experiences carefully reflected upon." With

Critical Reflection Essay
Last class Mr. Blake, who works with the Ministry of Education and is living with a disability came
and enlightened us on some core issues that impact persons with disability. The presentation was
very informative as we discussed the context and the nature of disabilities that different persons
experience. As well as the positive and negative attitudes of the interest groups about such persons.
Subsequently, Global Policies pertaining to the United Nations Convention on the Rights with
Persons with Disability Act and the subject of advocacy were critical highlights. Interestingly, Mr.
Blake who is visually impaired/blind shared some key points to note when considering persons with
a disability this included access to information, communication and accommodation. Additionally,
essential to persons living with a disability is the enabling and supportive environment.

Essentially, highlighted were a number of vital issues pertaining to persons living with a disability
and the need for greater inclusion. Also, the use of the group activities brought across the different
points clearly and gave us an opportunity to participate in the discussions. Furthermore, having
someone who is, in fact, living with a disability sharing from their personal experience helped me to

Critical reflection. What do we really mean?
Patricia Lucas
Auckland University of Technology (and PhD student Deakin University)
Do we really know what critical reflection means in the context of work–integrated learning, more
specifically cooperative education? Critical reflection, in some form, is located within many higher
education programmes, including cooperative education and many educators would say this is
important for in–depth student learning. It is a form of reflection that is complicated as well as
challenging for the learner and the educator. It would appear that there is a lack of consensus
regarding the definition of critical reflection, as it is difficult to define and your definition may
depend on your context...show more content...
Guidelines in the literature on how to determine, facilitate and assess critical reflection in practice
appear to be limited (Leijen et al., 2011; Smith, 2011).
Models of critical reflection
This vast area in the literature, which explores models of critical reflection, lacks clarity. There
seems to be similarities within and across the various applications from many fields or disciplines
of education that may have little or no areas of overlap (Fook & Gardner 2007). Many models of
reflection based on a philosophical approach, may be considered to assist students develop an
understanding of critical reflection. These have been briefly outlined in table 1.0 to help visualize
the relationship between the models and frameworks. The framework chosen to guide students'
reflections may be determined by the expectations of the learning outcomes. Some models of
reflection may not encourage critical reflection. Models may guide the process of reflection but
should not impose a prescription of what reflection is. It is not essential to follow a model and some
practitioners choose not to. There is some criticism of models that reduce reflection to levels but this
approach maybe useful for teaching what the focus of reflection entails. The student may choose
whether or not to adopt a model to frame their reflection as a temporary measure until confidence in
the reflective activity is gained and understood.

Critical Thinking Reflection Essay
Critical thinking is a significant and essential topic in recent education. The strategy of critical
thinking skills helps identify areas in one's courses as the suitable place to highlight, expand and use
some problems in exams that test students' critical thinking skills.
Critical thinking means accurate thinking in the search of appropriate and dependable knowledge
about the world. Another way to describe it is sensible, insightful, responsible, and skillful thinking
that is focused on deciding what to believe or do. Critical thinking is not being able to process
information well enough to know to stop for red lights or whether you established the right change at
the supermarket.

My job now isn't bad, but it takes forever to get there, because I do have a car. I need a job that
closer to home and that would give me more hours. I could gather all the information, weigh the pros
and cons and come to a sound decision. Putting my personal feelings aside and avoid errors in
judgment. Sometimes I need to think without my emotions. It would help me not to use snap
judgments, negative labeling and stereotypes in my thought process. I should also try learning to use
a more creative problem solving, because it helps to approach problem from a different direction
and explores news options. It may also help solve easier problems first and help tackle harder
problems. Should I be a 5th year undergraduate or graduate this year?
I decided last year to change my second major and I was presented with the decision to graduate
on time and not have a second major or stay for an extra year and pursuer my second major. I
briefly talked to my advisor before when I was changing my second major and she told me to look
at everything. She always said that I wasn't too late to change my mind, but the decision was
completely up to me.
Decision: Being a 5th year undergraduate.
ProsCons
I would finish undergrad with two majorsI would have to figure out how to pay for it
I'll be able to stay in the circusI would be in school for 4 more years instead of 3 years

Critical Reflection
Critical Analysis and Reflection: key pedagogical concepts Within teaching practice it is important
to be aware of the underlying influences that inform your personal pedagogy. This includes an
understanding of pedagogical theories, personal values, beliefs and past experiences that is brought
into the teaching environment. In order to achieve this, one must practice critical analysis of
everyday situations encountered within the classroom, to understand whether or not your teaching
practice is effective and why this is the case. In order to work towards an understanding of the
influences on my future practice, I will analyse a critical incident where a student was asked to fill
out a quiz to grade herself on particular personal and classroom...show more content...
522) and reflection. Critical reflection can reveal the many details that impact on the creation of an
incident, as well as the response of both teacher and student. Critical incidents can be 'indicative of
underlying trends, motives and structures' (Tripp 1993, p. 25) within the classroom. Therefore,
critical reflection involves the consideration of the larger picture. This involves the social and
cultural influences and the past experiences that impact on the situation, 'not just the individual
actions of the teacher and the class' (McGill 2013, p. 522). Critical reflection also involves 'digging
deep to uncover both the strengths,' (McGill 2013, p. 522) and the shortcomings of a situation. This
will reveal the contextual factors 'that either foster or inhibit that teacher from acting' (Letts 2013, p.
474). Utilising critical reflexivity when practicing reflection will also reveal your own personal
assumptions that stem from personal experiences, beliefs and values, and an immersion in your own
culture (Hinchey 2010, p, 34). Awareness of your own assumptions will also lead to the realisation
that each student will respond differently due to their own values and assumptions. As Hinchey
(2004, p.24) states, students are 'likely to bring very different assumptions, expectations, and norms
into the classroom.' Furthermore, it is critical to avoid making assumptions based on personal
experience when working with students as this can hinder their progress and result in incorrect or
inappropriate strategies for their

So far, I have nearly completed my first sub question and am writing the references and
bibliography of it. Moreover, I have finished my source evaluation template for my question, which
has helped me to know how effective my research sources are and how they had helped me to
know more about my question. As my first sub question requires a lot of depth I think I will require
more time on answering it. For now, to be honest, my management plan is not as effective as I
thought as I am still stuck in my first sub question, which I was supposed to do 1 week earlier
according to my management plan. I think I am using my time wisely as I continue to do research on
my topic whenever I get time. But to complete my work in time, I will have to utilize

The final role play assessment was used to test the knowledge and skills that were learnt and
attained throughout the curriculum which was followed by personal critical reflection on the
interview. According to Payne (1998), critical reflection is the core of social work, as it enhances
one's development and improves practice which ultimately lead to improved outcomes for clients
(Askeland & Fook, 2009). In this paper I will identify the skills, strengths, values, views and the
language that I conveyed in the final role play assessment as well as what I would have done
differently. I will also provide an analysis and an evaluation of the skills that I conveyed in the
interview. When reviewing the video of the interview, I felt that my paralinguistics, including my

With the given case scenario, my views and values about parental control and safety on the
internet could have affected how I approached this scenario. Family is very important to me, and
I have two younger sisters who constantly are using the internet on their devices in their rooms. I
am aware that technology is advancing and the internet is becoming a major platform in meeting
new people and has always been a platform in communicating which is not without exception to
cyberbullies and predators. So when the 'client' was discussing about her daughter being on these
websites which she felt was inappropriate, I did feel that I did have to hold back on recommending
parenting controls, and navigating what her child goes on, on the internet. I did not however take
this approach because problem solving or posing my views on what she should be doing as a
parent was not my role in the first initial session, my role was to explore her worries and concerns
without bringing my views and values into the

Critical Reflection In Nursing
Critical reflection is vital to develop evidence based practice for safe and quality approaches to
professional nursing practice. Nursing professionals should critically reflect on events to identify
what health professionals might do to improve their practice and reduce the risk of a similar error.
Reflective practice can help to learn from their mistakes, be empowered and most importantly to
deliver best possible care to patient as nurses must work closely with their patients to develop a
therapeutic relationship. Critical reflection is a valuable skill to ensure patient centred care. This
practice promotes personal development by enhancing students' self–awareness, their sense of
community, and their sense of their own capacities for...show more content...
It was found that the nurses had insufficient recording of wound care and the staff were not
monitoring the wounds consistently or keeping Mr Selir's GP up to date on his condition. After
this incident, the nursing home introduced new staff, systems and processes to improve the
quality of care to residents. I felt frustrated and disturbed as coming from overseas, my family
background has always taught us to respect and look after our elderly therefore back in our
country we don't believe in nursing homes. According to Nursing and Midwifery Board of
Australia [NMBA] 2016, health professionals ought to provide safe, appropriate and responsive
quality nursing practice. The negligence of this incident had a negative impact on the patient's
family members. Approximately 25% of cases involving medical negligence involve poor nursing
care. Another negative aspect was patient's family follow up was poor resulting in lack of
importance highlighted on the pressure wounds. Ashley (2003) states nurses can be sued for
malpractice, this means he or she is being sued for "negligence". Furthermore, the nursing health
professionals can lose its credibility among a community as they failed to provide a holistic care for
the patient. However, a positive outcome was nurses were able to reflect among this evidence based
practice to assist in better quality in patient

Secondly, one of the ways to find any solution to avoid the loss of at least 200000 jobs in
Australia is with a critical reflection. The Gibbs model has provided an easy tool to analyse in
simple steps a philosophical and practical cycle, to develop a strategic solution to solve and
maintain enterprises in health. In comparison with the Stephenson critical reflection framework,
Gibbs brings a rapid solution, being a pragmatic approach building the knowledge through past and
present events. The tools, as well as, description, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion and an
action plan and again the Gibbs'cycle is repeated (Jasper, 2013)

The Allen Consulting Group (ACG) have prepared a research in regards to this, and they conclude
that the automotive manufacturing in Australia have lost the opportunity to export more or at least
get in balance the competitors. Furthermore, the ACG explains that it is coming a new generation of
cars, the 'green time', electrical cars, and the Australian Government are providing assistance in this
program. However the research shows that the transition between petrol to electrical, could be

Evaluation: What was good and/or bad about the experience?
The 'good' side of this experience could be the lack of need of economic assistance by the
government. Australia is one of the last countries in provide assistance in the Automotive Industry.
The savings are almost 7.1 billion with the closure of the car factories, and more than 200.000 jobs

Critical Reflection In Nursing
Critical reflection is an indispensable tool used in evidence based nursing practice. Critical
reflection is often a difficult concept to define as all health professionals interpret it in diverse
ways. However, one definition of critical reflection is the revision of nursing practice experience
so that it can be described, analysed and evaluated to use that knowledge to improve on future
practice (Bulman & Schutz, 2013). Critical reflection is essential for nursing practice because it
ensures patient safety and provides holistic care. This assignment will discuss in further detail a
description of an event, a reflection of thoughts and feelings and an evaluation of the positive and
negative sides of the incident from both the nurse's and the patient's viewpoint and the
consequences. Followed by an analysis of what can be taken away from the event to further
improve future nursing practice as well as what can be done to improve one's own learning and
develop an action plan using new knowledge. Elder abuse is a growing crisis in modern aged care
facilities and often carers charged with the responsibility of looking after the elder population fail to
provide thorough evaluations for deteriorating individuals. This was true for an elderly resident of
Gold Coast nursing home after nursing staff failed to properly identify, record and treat deteriorating
pressure sore wounds, which became gangrenous, that led to his passing after a family member got
him to the hospital (Lewis,

Critical Reflection Essay

  • 1. Essay on Critical Thinking/Reflection Assessing both critical thinking and the reflection process in learning, these aspects are both intertwined. Without one, you cannot have the other. With the use of critical thinking and reflection this thought process allows us to analyse, assess, evaluate, learn and develop arguments. However this can have a twofold affect in the learning process. The learning process means taking many aspects and perspectives into account to establish an argument. Critical thinking draws on questions such as: how, what, when, why and who to determine the quality of an argument and also the credibility. Although without critical thinking a conclusion cannot be drawn. Barriers to critical thinking must also be questioned, whether these are: doubt,...show more content... (Cottrell, Stella, 2005) states "poor criticism can result from making judgment based on too general an overview of the subject matter." When developing an argument one must be careful not to make false or unfair assumptions and always look for alternative points of view. Doing this allows you to analyse and evaluate and make a more informed decision about an argument. Arguments are about reviewing, speculating and assessing. As a result of doing this, a line of reasoning can be established and conclusions made. Barriers such as critiquing an argument can have a positive effect in critical thinking and the learning process as it allows a person to question everything. One must also be careful when developing an argument and using the critical thinking skills not to make generalisations and jumping to a conclusion. Critical thinking is the skill of thinking about your own thinking and perspectives. Critical questioning is an important part of the critical thinking process. Questioning how, what, when, why and who are all essential parts to evaluate and analyse a quality of an argument. By doing this it allows deeper thought and allows you to find an argument. This is described through (Dwyer, Judith, 2009) stating that critical thinking is: "purposeful, self–regulatory judgement that occurs when an issue is raised, a problem needs to be solved, opinions are reconsidered or experiences carefully reflected upon." Patricia Lucas Auckland University of Technology (and PhD student Deakin University) Do we really know what critical reflection means in the context of work–integrated learning, more specifically cooperative education? Critical reflection, in some form, is located within many higher education programmes, including cooperative education and many educators would say this is important for in–depth student learning. It is a form of reflection that is complicated as well as challenging for the learner and the educator. It would appear that there is a lack of consensus regarding the definition of critical reflection, as it is difficult to define and your definition may depend on your context...show more content... Guidelines in the literature on how to determine, facilitate and assess critical reflection in practice appear to be limited (Leijen et al., 2011; Smith, 2011). Models of critical reflection This vast area in the literature, which explores models of critical reflection, lacks clarity. There seems to be similarities within and across the various applications from many fields or disciplines of education that may have little or no areas of overlap (Fook & Gardner 2007). Many models of reflection based on a philosophical approach, may be considered to assist students develop an understanding of critical reflection. These have been briefly outlined in table 1.0 to help visualize the relationship between the models and frameworks. The framework chosen to guide students' reflections may be determined by the expectations of the learning outcomes. Some models of reflection may not encourage critical reflection. Models may guide the process of reflection but should not impose a prescription of what reflection is. It is not essential to follow a model and some practitioners choose not to. There is some criticism of models that reduce reflection to levels but this approach maybe useful for teaching what the focus of reflection entails. The student may choose whether or not to adopt a model to frame their reflection as a temporary measure until confidence in the reflective activity is gained and understood. Critical reflection can reveal the many details that impact on the creation of an incident, as well as the response of both teacher and student. Critical incidents can be 'indicative of underlying trends, motives and structures' (Tripp 1993, p. 25) within the classroom. Therefore, critical reflection involves the consideration of the larger picture. This involves the social and cultural influences and the past experiences that impact on the situation, 'not just the individual actions of the teacher and the class' (McGill 2013, p. 522). Critical reflection also involves 'digging deep to uncover both the strengths,' (McGill 2013, p. 522) and the shortcomings of a situation. This will reveal the contextual factors 'that either foster or inhibit that teacher from acting' (Letts 2013, p. 474). Utilising critical reflexivity when practicing reflection will also reveal your own personal assumptions that stem from personal experiences, beliefs and values, and an immersion in your own culture (Hinchey 2010, p, 34). Awareness of your own assumptions will also lead to the realisation that each student will respond differently due to their own values and assumptions. As Hinchey (2004, p.24) states, students are 'likely to bring very different assumptions, expectations, and norms into the classroom.' Furthermore, it is critical to avoid making assumptions based on personal experience when working with students as this can hinder their progress and result in incorrect or inappropriate strategies for their Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 11. Critical Reflection In Nursing Critical reflection is an indispensable tool used in evidence based nursing practice. Critical reflection is often a difficult concept to define as all health professionals interpret it in diverse ways. However, one definition of critical reflection is the revision of nursing practice experience so that it can be described, analysed and evaluated to use that knowledge to improve on future practice (Bulman & Schutz, 2013). Critical reflection is essential for nursing practice because it ensures patient safety and provides holistic care. This assignment will discuss in further detail a description of an event, a reflection of thoughts and feelings and an evaluation of the positive and negative sides of the incident from both the nurse's and the patient's viewpoint and the consequences. Followed by an analysis of what can be taken away from the event to further improve future nursing practice as well as what can be done to improve one's own learning and develop an action plan using new knowledge. Elder abuse is a growing crisis in modern aged care facilities and often carers charged with the responsibility of looking after the elder population fail to provide thorough evaluations for deteriorating individuals.
