Thank you for your participation in our recent Gartner Research Circle survey on 5G adoption. The input provided by you and
your peers in Gartner Research Circle is valued highly. We will use the results from this survey for our research in 2017, as well
as in presentations for Gartner events attended by CIOs, IT leaders and IT professionals throughout the globe.
The survey was designed to learn the most common use cases for 5G as well as attitudes towards and expectations for 5G. The
survey shows that the most common expected uses for 5G include IoT communications, video, and fixed wireless access. But,
members are unsure of the availability and cost of 5G, and are split on the ability of 5G to mitigate new security threats.
We hope that these findings help you anticipate and prepare for what’s next for mobile communications standards.
Thank you again for your contributions to our research.
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Sylvain Fabre

Methodology
This research was conducted via an online survey from April 3rd to April 24th, 2017 among Gartner
Research Circle Members – a Gartner-managed panel comprised of IT and business leaders, and
supplemented by an external panel
In total, 205 members completed the survey (96 Research Circle Members; 109 External Panel)
Gartner Research Circle IT and IT/Business Members were invited to participate
The survey was developed collaboratively by a team of Gartner analysts, and was reviewed, tested
and administered by Gartner’s Primary Research team

Key takeaways
5G is expected to replace 4G as the standard mobile network technology within the next 5
years, with 5G expected to be broadly available by 2020
– 5G is generally viewed as the next evolution of infrastructure, one that will further enable digital business, with speed,
reliability, and energy efficiency capabilities its central benefits
Organizations will likely utilize 5G to help drive IoT communications, as well as for its video
and fixed wireless access capabilities
– While 5G is likely to be central to IoT initiatives in the future, opinion is split as to whether 5G will help to mitigate new
security risks associated with IOT in the future
Availability and affordability will be key to driving adoption of 5G amongst organizations
– While most companies (74%) could be willing to pay more for 5G, 1 in 4 do not believe their organization to be willing to
pay more for 5G than they currently pay for 4G

For this study, we asked IT professionals to tell us about their thoughts and projections with
regards to 5G
“Most experts say 5G will feature
network speeds that are as fast as 20
G/bps or higher and have a latency that
is mere milliseconds. But, how will
these features be employed in practical
uses - or is it just a lot of hype? What
time frame do you expect 5G to be
available?”
