5. SoW example ANCIENT & HISTORICAL: British Museum Example PLTS: IE/CT/RL/SF How does sustainability affect the environment? Investigate the evolution and life cycle of the museum from its original founding through to modern day use. Evaluate the contribution of the building to society & the community The BM is a ‘free’ exhibition for everyone enabling them to visit artefacts from different cultures juxtaposed. How could it be improved to benefit individuals & community? Design a new ‘room’ to house an international exhibition. How would you incorporate this into the existing building. Who would you need to ‘employ’ to construct your room. Investigate the job roles with regards to build, maintenance & management. Student is required to spend time with one of the Museum’s staff to understand their job role. It could be a Corporate Relations assistant or Conservation scientist or Gallery assistance or Catering manager. You are required to come back and present this person's job description to the class so that a full overview of the occupational structure and the importance of teamwork is appreciated and understood.
6. SoW example COMMERCIAL PLTS: IE/CT/RL/SF How does sustainability affect the environment? What material is the building constructed from? How old and how long is the building like to last? Devise a maintenance scheme for improving the sustainability of the building. Evaluate the contribution of the building to society & the community Evaluate the function of the building. If it is a ‘new build’ what contribution is being made to the local community. Eg. is a school or housing being proposed along with the planning application? How could it be improved to benefit individuals & community? Is the building well maintained?. Would the building benefit from a change of use? How would that affect the local community? Investigate the job roles with regards to build, maintenance & management. Student is required to spend 1 day on work experience with a firm of Property managers to investigate the role of Facility Managers learning about the lifecycle of a building / how to manage the assets / the maintenance / health & safety requirements.
7. SoW example HOUSING: your own house PLTS: CT/SM/IE/RL How does sustainability affect the environment? When was your house built? What is it made of? What insulation do you use? Work out your carbon footprint using a website calculator. How could you improve your utility bills? Evaluate the contribution of the building to society & the community Is your house private or social? Investigate the value of your house. Explain the financial structure of your home ownership scheme. How could it be improved to benefit individuals & community? Design a new ‘room’ for your house. What would its function be? How would you incorporate this into the existing building. Who would you need to ‘employ’ to construct your room. Investigate the job roles with regards to build, maintenance & management. Who maintains the house? Who pays / manages the bills? Learn how to read you utility meters and bills. Investigate the type of insurances you need.
8. SoW example Group Project Elephant & Castle regeneration Scheme PLTS: TM/EP/SM/RL How does sustainability affect the environment? Why a new life cycle required? What are the social and community issues? Investigate the Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI) to create and advance solutions to the core issues driving climate change in the Elephant & Castle Regeneration Project. Evaluate the contribution of the building to society & the community What range and type of accommodation will be available? How does one access these types of home? How are the commercial property assets managed? What How could it be improved to benefit individuals & community? What are the benefits of this regeneration scheme. How do you think you could improve the regeneration plans or regeneration management? What management and maintenance would be needed for the Elephant & Castle up until 2040?
