Brief Summary of responsibilities:
Visiting Professor responsible for managing a number of funded research and
development projects involving e-Learning. The role includes liaising with
management, academic and support staff across the university; ensuring the
successful delivery of project outputs; liaising with the funding agencies, and
managing the project budgets. Additional work includes PhD supervision,
representing the university on EU and other Research Groups and acting in an
advisory capacity for TEL developments across the university.
Projects and Consultancy:
Currently three TEL projects/consultancies are being managed:
1. SMUDIE (Swansea Metropolitan University Data Integration Exercise): A
JISC funded project to optimize student information management systems at
Swansea Metropolitan using Enterprise Architecture, VSM and Soft Systems
modeling. Budget £15k. Scheduled completion: July 2013.
2. HPC Wales e-Learning Project: A consultancy through e-College.ac Ltd for
Fujitsu/HPC Wales for the development of HPC training online and guidance
in the validation as a PGCert in high performance computing. Budget £12k.
Scheduled completion: April 2014.
3. Strategic Insight Programme: A project with Swansea Metropolitan in
collaboration with JISC Advance and RSC Wales aimed at enhancing
institutional capacity to develop technology enhanced learning. Budget £2.5k.
Scheduled completion: July 2013.
Planning for future innovative projects is a part of the current role. Advice on EU and
JISC project funding opportunities is provided and engagement with the community
of practice ensured through participation in National and European practitioner
groups.

1. PotsPan (Pilot of the SWANI Project Administrative Network): An
Embedding Benefits project based at Coleg Sir Gâr focused on sharing the
successful outcomes of a JISC project to digitize the management and
administration systems for work-based learning in Wales. Budget £40k.
Completed April 2013.
2. DEWI (Delivering Work-Based Improvements): A JISC Embedding
Benefits project based at Swansea Metropolitan in collaboration with Cardiff
Metropolitan University, aimed at implementing the JISC WBL Maturity Toolkit
in a number of Welsh universities to improve the quality of delivery. Budget
£40k. Completed April 2013.
3. JISC Curriculum Design Support and Synthesis project: a JISC funded
project to act as a Critical Friend to a cluster of technology enhanced
curriculum design projects managed by Staffordshire University, Bolton
University, Manchester Metropolitan University and Leeds Metropolitan
University. Budget £50k. Completed 2012.
4. SVEA: an EU funded multi-national project to develop training materials for
academic staff to use Web 2.0 technologies in the delivery of the curriculum.
Management of the Wales regional component for Coleg Sir Gâr. Budget
€96k. Completed 2011.
5. SWANI (Secure Work-based learning Administration through Networked
Infrastructure): A JISC funded project based at Coleg Sir Gâr to digitize the
work-based learning provision and implement a digital signature system that
meets EU and Welsh Assembly Government audit requirements. Budget
£50k. Completed 2011.
6. Bracken (Business Resource and Community Knowledge Exchange
Network): a JISC funded project, based at Swansea Metropolitan University,
to develop the business and community engagement activities of a multi-
institutional collaborative network in South West Wales. Lead partner:
Swansea Metropolitan University. Budget £100k. Completed 2011.
7. Review of the HEFCW e-Learning Strategy: e-College.ac Ltd was a partner
in the team of consultants evaluating and reporting on the progress against
targets for the e-Learning Strategy for Wales. Budget £18k. Completed 2011.
8. RATATAT (Remote Access to Academic Trials and Testing): a JISC
funded project to develop an online learning environment to allow distance
learning MSc NDT students at Swansea Metropolitan University access and
carry out sophisticated laboratory experiments remotely. Lead partner:

9. WALES (Work-Based Access to Learning through E-Services):
management of a JISC funded research and development project evaluating
the use of mobile technology and social networking software in the support of
on-line distance learners. Lead partner: University of Glamorgan. Budget:

10. eTutor (Education Through Ubiquitous Technologies and On-line
Resources): management of a JISC funded research and development
project exploring the concept that on-line distance learning can be facilitated
using existing personal computing resources and learning materials freely
available on the Internet. Lead partner: Swansea Metropolitan University.

11. ReCITE (Reusable Content for IT Education): management of a JISC
funded development project evaluating the ability to re-purpose on-line
educational content developed by one institution in different curriculum areas

12. The Wales e-Training Network (Phases 1 & 2): management of a KEF

SWANI (Secure Work-based learning Administration through Networked Infrastructure): A JISC funded project based at Coleg Sir Gâr to digitize the work-based learning provision and implement a digital signature system that meets EU and Welsh Assembly Government audit requirements. Bracken (Business Resource and Community Knowledge Exchange Network): a JISC funded project, based at Swansea Metropolitan University, to develop the business and community engagement activities of a multi- institutional collaborative network in South West Wales.
