Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer
Even before the turn of the century, movies began to develop in two major directions: the realistic and the
formalistic. Realism and formalism are merely general, rather than absolute, terms. When used to suggest a tendency
toward either polarity, such labels can be helpful, but in the end they are still just labels. Few films are exclusively
formalist in style, and fewer yet are completely realist. There is also an important difference between realism and reality,
although this distinction is often forgotten. Realism is a particular style, whereas physical reality is the source of all the
raw materials of film, both realistic and formalistic. Virtually all movie directors go to the photographable world for their
subject matter, but what they do with this material - how they shape and manipulate it - determines their stylistic
emphasis.
Generally speaking, realistic films attempt to reproduce the surface of concrete reality with a minimum of distortion.
In photographing objects and events, the filmmaker tries to suggest the copiousness of life itself. Both realist and
formalist film directors must select (and hence emphasize) certain details from the chaotic sprawl of reality. But the
element of selectivity in realistic films is less obvious. Realists, in short, try to preserve the illusion that their film world
is unmanipulated, an objective mirror of the actual world. Formalists, on the other hand, make no such pretense. They
deliberately stylize and distort their raw materials so that only the very naive would mistake a manipulated image of an
object or event for the real thing.
We rarely notice the style in a realistic movie; the artist tends to be self-effacing. Some filmmakers are more
concerned with what is being shown than how it is manipulated. The camera is used conservatively. It is essentially a
recording mechanism that reproduces the surface of tangible objects with as little commentary as possible. A high
premium is placed on simplicity, spontaneity, and directness. This is not to suggest that these movies lack artistry,
however, for at its best the realistic cinema specializes in art that conceals art.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer
In the last third of the nineteenth century a new housing form was quietly being developed. I n 1869 the
Stuyvesant, considered New York‟s first apartment house was built on East Eighteenth Street. The building was financed
by the developer Rutherfurd Stuyvesant and designed by Richard Morris Hunt, the first American architect to graduate
from the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Each man had lived in Paris, and each understood the economics and social
potential of this Parisian housing form. But the Stuyvesant was at best a limited success. In spite of Hunt‟s inviting
façade, the living space was awkwardly arranged. Those who could afford them were quite content to remain in the more
sumptuous, single-family homes, leaving the Stuyvesant to newly married couples and bachelors.
The fundamental problem with the Stuyvesant and the other early apartment buildings that quickly followed, in
the 1870‟s and early 1880‟s was that they were confined to the typical New York building lot. That lot was a rectangular
area 25 feet wide by 100 feet deep–a shape perfectly suited for a row house. The lot could also accommodate a
rectangular tenement, though it could not yield the square, well-lighted, and logically arranged rooms that great
apartment buildings require. But even with the awkward interior configurations of the early apartment buildings, the idea
caught on. It met the needs of a large and growing population that wanted something better than tenements but could not
afford or did not want row houses.
So while the city‟s newly emerging social leadership commissioned their mansions, apartment houses and hotels
began to sprout in multiple lots, thus breaking the initial space constraints. In the closing decades of the nineteenth
century, large apartment houses began dotting the developed portions of New York City, and by the opening decades of
the twentieth century, spacious buildings, such as the Dakota and the Ansonia finally transcended the tight confinement
of row house building lots. From there it was only a small step to building luxury apartment houses on the newly created
Park Avenue, right next to the fashionable Fifth Avenue shopping area.

each of the questions from 1 to 10:
Animation traditionally is done by hand-drawing or painting successive frame of an object, each slightly different
than the proceeding frame. In computer animation, although the computer may be the one to draw the different frames, in
most cases the artist will draw the beginning and ending frames and the computer will produce the drawings between the
first and the last drawing. This is generally referred to as computer-assisted animation, because the computer is more of a
helper than an originator.
In full computer animation, complex mathematical formulas are used to produce the final sequences of pictures.
These formulas operate on extensive databases of numbers that defines the objects in the pictures as they exist in
mathematical space. The database consists of endpoints, and color and intensity information. Highly trained professionals
are needed to produce such effects because animation that obtains high degrees of realism involves computer techniques
fro three-dimensional transformation, shading, and curvatures.
High-tech computer animation for film involves very expensive computer systems along with special color terminals
or frame buffers. The frame buffer is nothing more than a giant image memory for viewing a single frame. It temporarily
holds the image for display on the screen.
A camera can be used to film directly from the computer‟s display screen, but for the highest quality images possible,
expensive film recorders are used. The computer computers the positions and colors for the figures in the picture, and
sends this information to the recorder, which captures it on film. Sometimes, however, the images are stored on a large
magnetic disk before being sent to the recorder. Once this process is completed, it is replaced for the next frame. When
the entire sequence has been recorded on the film, the film must be developed before the animation can be viewed. If the
entire sequence does not seem right, the motions must be corrected, recomputed, redisplayed, and rerecorded. This
approach can be very expensive and time- consuming. Often, computer-animation companies first do motion tests with

Reading the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer.
Some animal behaviorists argue that certain animals can remember part events, anticipate future ones, make plans and
choices, and coordinate activities within a group. These scientists, however, are cautious about the extent to which
animals can be credited with conscious processing.
Explanations of animal behavior that leave out any sort of consciousness at all and ascribe actions entirely to instinct
leave many questions unanswered. One example of such unexplained behavior: Honeybees communicate the sources of
nectar to one another by doing a dance in a figure-eight pattern. The orientation of the dance conveys the position of the
food relative to the sun‟s position in the sky, and the speed of the dance tells how far the food source is from the hive. Most
researchers assume that the ability to perform and encode the dance is innate and shows no special intelligence. But in one
study, when experimenters kept changing the site of the food source, each time moving the food 25 percent father from the
previous site, foraging honeybees began to anticipate where the food source would appear next. When the researchers
- 2013

trang: 60
Trung tâm Luyện thi Đại học CLC QSC-45
arrived at the new location, they would find the bees circling the spot, waiting for their food. No one has yet explained how
bees, whose brains weigh four ten-thousandths of an ounce, could have inferred the location of the new site.
Other behaviors that may indicate some cognition include tool use. Many animals, like the otter who uses a stone to
crack mussel shells, are capable of using objects in the natural environment as rudimentary tools. One researcher has
found that mother chimpanzees occasionally show their young how to use tools to open hard nuts. In one study,
chimpanzees compared two pairs of food wells containing chocolate chips. One pair might contain, say, five chips and
three chips, the other four chips and three chips. Allowed to choose which pair they wanted, the chimpanzees almost
always chose the one with the higher total, showing some sort of summing ability. Other chimpanzees have learned to
use numerals to label quantities of items and do simple sums.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the
following questions.
"The economic history of the United States", one scholar has written, "is the history of the rise and development
of the capitalistic system". The colonists of the eighteenth century pushed forward what those of the seventeenth century
have begun: the expansion and elaboration of an economy born in the great age of capitalist expansion.
Our excellent natural resources paved the way for the development of abundant capital to increase our growth.
Capital includes the tools – such as: machines, vehicles, and buildings – that makes the outputs of labor and resources
more valuable. But it also includes the funds necessary to buy those tools. If a society had to consume everything it
produced just to stay alive, nothing could be put aside to increase future productions. But if a farmer can grow more corn
than his family needs to eat, he can use the surplus as seed to increase the next crop, or to feed workers who build
tractors. This process of capital accumulation was aided in the American economy by our cultural heritage. Saving
played an important role in the European tradition. It contributed to American‟s motivation to put something aside today
for the tools to buy tomorrow.
The great bulk of the accumulated wealth of America, as distinguished from what was consumed, was derived
either directly or indirectly from trade. Though some manufacturing existed, its role in the accumulation of capital was
negligible. A merchant class of opulent proportions was already visible in the seaboard cities, its wealth as the obvious
consequence of shrewd and resourceful management of the carrying trade. Even the rich planters of tidewater Virginia
and the rice coast of South Carolina finally depended for their genteel way of life upon the ships and merchants who sold
their tobacco and rice in the markets of Europe. As colonial production rose and trade expanded, a business community
emerged in the colonies, linking the provinces by lines of trade and identity of interest.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the
following question.
Although they are an inexpensive supplier of vitamins, minerals, and high-quality protein, eggs also contain a high
level of blood cholesterol, one of the major causes of heart diseases. One egg yolk, in fact, contains a little more than
two-thirds of the suggested daily cholesterol limit. This knowledge has driven egg sales to plummet in recent years,
which in turn has brought about the development of several alternatives to eating regular eggs. One alternative is to eat
substitute eggs. These egg substitutes are not really eggs, but they look somewhat like eggs when they are cooked. They
have the advantage of having low cholesterol rates, and they can be scrambled or used in baking. One disadvantage,
however, is that they are not good for frying, poaching, or boiling. A second alternative to regular eggs is a new type of
egg, sometimes called „designer‟ eggs. These eggs are produced by hens that are fed low-flat diets consisting of
ingredients such as canola oil, flax, and rice bran. In spite of their diet, however, these hens produce eggs that contain the
same amount of cholesterol as regular eggs. Yet, the producers of these eggs claim that eating their eggs will not raise the
blood cholesterol in humans.
Egg producers claim that their product has been portrayed unfairly. They cite scientific studies to back up their
claim. And, in fact, studies on the relationship between eggs and human cholesterol levels have brought mixed result. It
may be that it is not the type of eggs that is the main determinant of cholesterol but the person who is eating the eggs.
Some people may be more sensitive to cholesterol derived from food than other people. In fact, there is evidence that
certain dietary fats stimulate the body‟s production of blood cholesterol. Consequently, while it still makes sense to limit
one‟s intake of eggs, even designer eggs, it seems that doing this without regulating dietary fat will probably not help
reduce the blood cholesterol level.
61. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To introduce the idea that dietary at increases the blood cholesterol level
B. To make people know about the relationship between eggs and cholesterol
C. To persuade people that eggs are unhealthy and should not be eaten
D. To convince people to eat „designer‟ eggs and egg substitutes.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
Our demand for water is constantly increasing. Every year there are more and more people in the world.
Factories turn out more and more products and need more and more water. We live in a world of water. But almost all of
it - about 97% - is in the oceans. This water is too salty to be used for drinking, farming, and manufacturing. Only about
3% of the world's water is fresh. Most of this water is not easily available to man because it is locked in glaciers and
icecaps. There is as much water on earth today as there ever was or will ever be. Most of the water we use finds its way
to the oceans. There, it is evaporated by the sun. It then falls back to the earth as rain.
Water is used and reused over again. It is never used up. Although the world as a whole has plenty of fresh
water, some regions have a water shortage. Rain does not fall evenly over the earth. Some regions are always too dry, and
others too wet. A region that usually gets enough rain may suddenly have a serious dry spell and another region may be
flooded with too much rain.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the
questions.
It is commonly believed in the United States that school is where people go to get as education. Nevertheless, it
has been said that today children interrupt their education to go to school. The distinction between schooling and
education implied by this remark is important.
Education is much more open-ended and all-inclusive than schooling. Education knows no bounds. It can take place
where, whether in the shower or on the job, whether in a kitchen or on a tractor. It includes both the formal learning that
takes place in schools and the whole universe of informal learning. The agents of education can range from a reserved
grandparent to the people debating politics on the radio, from a child to a distinguished scientist. Whereas schooling has
certain predictability, education quite often produce surprise. A change conversation with a stranger may lead a person
to discover how little is known of other religions.

People are engaged in education from infancy on. Education, then, is a very broad, inclusive term. It is a lifelong
process, a process that starts long before the start of school and one that should be an integral part of one‟s entire life.
Schooling, on the other hand, is a specific, formalized process, whose general pattern varies little from one setting to the
next. Throughout a country, children arrive at school at approximately the same time, take assigned seats, and are taught
by an adult, use similar textbook, do homework, take exams, and so on. The slices of reality that are to be learnt, whether
they are the alphabet or an understanding of the workings of government, have usually been limited by the boundaries of
the subject being taught. For example, high school students know that they are not likely to find out in their class the
truth about political problems in their communities or what the newest filmmakers are experimenting with. There are
definite conditions surrounding the formalized process of schooling.
76. What does the author probably mean by using the expression “children interrupt their education to go to school”?

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
Herman Melville, an American author best known today for his novel Moby Dick, was actually more popular during his
lifetime for some of his other works. He traveled extensively and used the knowledge gained during his travels as the
basis for his early novels. In 1837, at the age of eighteen, Melville signed as a cabin boy on a merchant ship that was to
sail from his Massachusetts home to Liverpool, England.
His experiences on this trip served as a basis for the novel Redburn (1849). In 1841, Melville set out on a whaling
ship headed for the South Seas. After jumping ship in Tahiti, he wandered around the islands of Tahiti and Moorea. This
South Sea island sojourn was a backdrop to the novel Omoo (1847). After three years away from home, Melville joined
up with a U.S. naval frigate that was returning to the eastern United States around Cape Horn. The novel White Jacket
(1850) describes this lengthy voyage as a navy seaman.

With the publication of these early adventure novels, Melville developed a strong and loyal following among readers
eager for his tales of exotic places and situations. However, in 1851, with the publication of Moby Dick, Melville's
popularity started to diminish. Moby Dick, on one level the saga of the hunt for the great white whale, was also a heavily
symbolic allegory of the heroic struggle of humanity against the universe.
The public was not ready for Melville's literary metamorphosis from romantic adventure to philosophical
symbolism. It is ironic that the novel that served to diminish Melville's popularity during his lifetime is the one for which
he is best known today.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
An air pollutant is defined as a compound added directly or indirectly by humans to the atmosphere in such
quantities as to affect humans, animals, vegetation, or materials adversely. Air pollution requires a very flexible
definition that permits continuous change. When the first air pollution laws were established in England in the fourteenth
century, air pollutants were limited to compounds that could be seen or smelled - a far cry from the extensive list of
harmful substances known today. As technology has developed and knowledge of the health aspects of various chemicals
has increased, the list of air pollutants has lengthened. In the future, even water vapor might be considered an air
pollutant under certain conditions.
Many of the more important air pollutants, such as sulfur oxides, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides, are found in
nature. As the Earth developed, the concentration of these pollutants was altered by various chemical reactions; they
became components in biogeochemical cycles. These serve as an air purification scheme by allowing the compounds to
move from the air to the water or soil. On a global basis, nature's output of these compounds dwarfs that resulting from
human activities.
However, human production usually occurs in a localized area, such as a city. In such a region, human output
may be dominant and may temporarily overload the natural purification scheme of the cycles. The result is an increased

concentration of noxious chemicals in the air. The concentrations at which the adverse effects appear will be greater than
the concentrations that the pollutants would have in the absence of human activities. The actual concentration need not be
large for a substance to be a pollutant; in fact, the numerical value tells us little until we know how much of an increase
this represents over the concentration that would occur naturally in the area. For example, sulfur dioxide has detectable
health effects at 0.08 parts per million (ppm), which is about 400 times its natural level. Carbon monoxide, however, has
a natural level of 0.1 ppm and is not usually a pollutant until its level reaches about 15 ppm.
56. What does the passage mainly discuss?
A. The economic impact of air pollution.
B. What constitutes an air pollutant.
C. How much harm air pollutants can cause.
D. The effects of compounds added to the atmosphere.
57. The word "adversely" in the first paragraph is closest in meaning to …………………

C. a substance becomes an air pollutant only in cities D. the definition of air pollution will continue to change
59. The word "These" in the second paragraph is closest in meaning to.............................
A. the various chemical reactions
B. the pollutants from the developing Earth
C. the compounds moved to the water or soil
D. the components in biogeochemical cycles
60. For which of the following reasons can natural pollutants play an important role in controlling air pollution?
A. They function as part of a purification process.
B. They occur in greater quantities than other pollutants.
C. They have existed since the Earth developed.
D. They are less harmful to living beings than other pollutants.
61. According to the passage, human-generated air pollution in localized regions .............................

Anhvan thay hai trung tam luyen thi dai hoc qsc-45 - de cuong on thi tsdh-cd - 2013

  • 1. Trung tâm Luyện thi Đại học CLC QSC-45 1 Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer Even before the turn of the century, movies began to develop in two major directions: the realistic and the formalistic. Realism and formalism are merely general, rather than absolute, terms. When used to suggest a tendency toward either polarity, such labels can be helpful, but in the end they are still just labels. Few films are exclusively formalist in style, and fewer yet are completely realist. There is also an important difference between realism and reality, although this distinction is often forgotten. Realism is a particular style, whereas physical reality is the source of all the raw materials of film, both realistic and formalistic. Virtually all movie directors go to the photographable world for their subject matter, but what they do with this material - how they shape and manipulate it - determines their stylistic emphasis. Generally speaking, realistic films attempt to reproduce the surface of concrete reality with a minimum of distortion. In photographing objects and events, the filmmaker tries to suggest the copiousness of life itself. Both realist and formalist film directors must select (and hence emphasize) certain details from the chaotic sprawl of reality. But the element of selectivity in realistic films is less obvious. Realists, in short, try to preserve the illusion that their film world is unmanipulated, an objective mirror of the actual world. Formalists, on the other hand, make no such pretense. They deliberately stylize and distort their raw materials so that only the very naive would mistake a manipulated image of an object or event for the real thing. We rarely notice the style in a realistic movie; the artist tends to be self-effacing. Some filmmakers are more concerned with what is being shown than how it is manipulated. The camera is used conservatively. It is essentially a recording mechanism that reproduces the surface of tangible objects with as little commentary as possible. A high premium is placed on simplicity, spontaneity, and directness. This is not to suggest that these movies lack artistry, however, for at its best the realistic cinema specializes in art that conceals art. 1. What does the passage mainly discuss? A. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer In the last third of the nineteenth century a new housing form was quietly being developed. I n 1869 the Stuyvesant, considered New York‟s first apartment house was built on East Eighteenth Street. The building was financed by the developer Rutherfurd Stuyvesant and designed by Richard Morris Hunt, the first American architect to graduate from the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Each man had lived in Paris, and each understood the economics and social potential of this Parisian housing form. But the Stuyvesant was at best a limited success. In spite of Hunt‟s inviting façade, the living space was awkwardly arranged. Those who could afford them were quite content to remain in the more sumptuous, single-family homes, leaving the Stuyvesant to newly married couples and bachelors. The fundamental problem with the Stuyvesant and the other early apartment buildings that quickly followed, in the 1870‟s and early 1880‟s was that they were confined to the typical New York building lot. That lot was a rectangular area 25 feet wide by 100 feet deep–a shape perfectly suited for a row house. The lot could also accommodate a rectangular tenement, though it could not yield the square, well-lighted, and logically arranged rooms that great apartment buildings require. But even with the awkward interior configurations of the early apartment buildings, the idea caught on. It met the needs of a large and growing population that wanted something better than tenements but could not afford or did not want row houses. So while the city‟s newly emerging social leadership commissioned their mansions, apartment houses and hotels began to sprout in multiple lots, thus breaking the initial space constraints. In the closing decades of the nineteenth century, large apartment houses began dotting the developed portions of New York City, and by the opening decades of the twentieth century, spacious buildings, such as the Dakota and the Ansonia finally transcended the tight confinement of row house building lots. From there it was only a small step to building luxury apartment houses on the newly created Park Avenue, right next to the fashionable Fifth Avenue shopping area. 71. In computer animation, although the computer may be the one to draw the different frames, in most cases the artist will draw the beginning and ending frames and the computer will produce the drawings between the first and the last drawing. This is generally referred to as computer-assisted animation, because the computer is more of a helper than an originator. In full computer animation, complex mathematical formulas are used to produce the final sequences of pictures. These formulas operate on extensive databases of numbers that defines the objects in the pictures as they exist in mathematical space. The database consists of endpoints, and color and intensity information. Highly trained professionals are needed to produce such effects because animation that obtains high degrees of realism involves computer techniques fro three-dimensional transformation, shading, and curvatures. High-tech computer animation for film involves very expensive computer systems along with special color terminals or frame buffers. The frame buffer is nothing more than a giant image memory for viewing a single frame. It temporarily holds the image for display on the screen. A camera can be used to film directly from the computer‟s display screen, but for the highest quality images possible, expensive film recorders are used. The computer computers the positions and colors for the figures in the picture, and sends this information to the recorder, which captures it on film. Sometimes, however, the images are stored on a large magnetic disk before being sent to the recorder. Once this process is completed, it is replaced for the next frame. When the entire sequence has been recorded on the film, the film must be developed before the animation can be viewed. If the entire sequence does not seem right, the motions must be corrected, recomputed, redisplayed, and rerecorded. This approach can be very expensive and time- consuming. Often, computer-animation companies first do motion tests with - 2013 trang: 56

Some animal behaviorists argue that certain animals can remember part events, anticipate future ones, make plans and choices, and coordinate activities within a group. These scientists, however, are cautious about the extent to which animals can be credited with conscious processing. Explanations of animal behavior that leave out any sort of consciousness at all and ascribe actions entirely to instinct leave many questions unanswered. One example of such unexplained behavior: Honeybees communicate the sources of nectar to one another by doing a dance in a figure-eight pattern. The orientation of the dance conveys the position of the food relative to the sun‟s position in the sky, and the speed of the dance tells how far the food source is from the hive. Most researchers assume that the ability to perform and encode the dance is innate and shows no special intelligence. But in one study, when experimenters kept changing the site of the food source, each time moving the food 25 percent father from the previous site, foraging honeybees began to anticipate where the food source would appear next. When the researchers - 2013 trang: 60
  • 11. Trung tâm Luyện thi Đại học CLC QSC-45 arrived at the new location, they would find the bees circling the spot, waiting for their food. No one has yet explained how bees, whose brains weigh four ten-thousandths of an ounce, could have inferred the location of the new site. Other behaviors that may indicate some cognition include tool use. Many animals, like the otter who uses a stone to crack mussel shells, are capable of using objects in the natural environment as rudimentary tools. One researcher has found that mother chimpanzees occasionally show their young how to use tools to open hard nuts. In one study, chimpanzees compared two pairs of food wells containing chocolate chips. One pair might contain, say, five chips and three chips, the other four chips and three chips. Allowed to choose which pair they wanted, the chimpanzees almost always chose the one with the higher total, showing some sort of summing ability. Other chimpanzees have learned to use numerals to label quantities of items and do simple sums. 71. What does the passage mainly discuss? A. "The economic history of the United States", one scholar has written, "is the history of the rise and development of the capitalistic system". The colonists of the eighteenth century pushed forward what those of the seventeenth century have begun: the expansion and elaboration of an economy born in the great age of capitalist expansion. Our excellent natural resources paved the way for the development of abundant capital to increase our growth. Capital includes the tools – such as: machines, vehicles, and buildings – that makes the outputs of labor and resources more valuable. But it also includes the funds necessary to buy those tools. If a society had to consume everything it produced just to stay alive, nothing could be put aside to increase future productions. But if a farmer can grow more corn than his family needs to eat, he can use the surplus as seed to increase the next crop, or to feed workers who build tractors. This process of capital accumulation was aided in the American economy by our cultural heritage. Saving played an important role in the European tradition. It contributed to American‟s motivation to put something aside today for the tools to buy tomorrow. The great bulk of the accumulated wealth of America, as distinguished from what was consumed, was derived either directly or indirectly from trade. Though some manufacturing existed, its role in the accumulation of capital was negligible. A merchant class of opulent proportions was already visible in the seaboard cities, its wealth as the obvious consequence of shrewd and resourceful management of the carrying trade. Even the rich planters of tidewater Virginia and the rice coast of South Carolina finally depended for their genteel way of life upon the ships and merchants who sold their tobacco and rice in the markets of Europe. As colonial production rose and trade expanded, a business community emerged in the colonies, linking the provinces by lines of trade and identity of interest. - 2013 trang: 64

Although they are an inexpensive supplier of vitamins, minerals, and high-quality protein, eggs also contain a high level of blood cholesterol, one of the major causes of heart diseases. One egg yolk, in fact, contains a little more than two-thirds of the suggested daily cholesterol limit. This knowledge has driven egg sales to plummet in recent years, which in turn has brought about the development of several alternatives to eating regular eggs. One alternative is to eat substitute eggs. These egg substitutes are not really eggs, but they look somewhat like eggs when they are cooked. They have the advantage of having low cholesterol rates, and they can be scrambled or used in baking. One disadvantage, however, is that they are not good for frying, poaching, or boiling. A second alternative to regular eggs is a new type of egg, sometimes called „designer‟ eggs. These eggs are produced by hens that are fed low-flat diets consisting of ingredients such as canola oil, flax, and rice bran. In spite of their diet, however, these hens produce eggs that contain the same amount of cholesterol as regular eggs. Yet, the producers of these eggs claim that eating their eggs will not raise the blood cholesterol in humans. Egg producers claim that their product has been portrayed unfairly. They cite scientific studies to back up their claim. And, in fact, studies on the relationship between eggs and human cholesterol levels have brought mixed result. It may be that it is not the type of eggs that is the main determinant of cholesterol but the person who is eating the eggs. Some people may be more sensitive to cholesterol derived from food than other people. In fact, there is evidence that certain dietary fats stimulate the body‟s production of blood cholesterol. Consequently, while it still makes sense to limit one‟s intake of eggs, even designer eggs, it seems that doing this without regulating dietary fat will probably not help reduce the blood cholesterol level. 61. What is the main purpose of the passage? A.To introduce the idea that dietary at increases the blood cholesterol level B. To make people know about the relationship between eggs and cholesterol C. To persuade people that eggs are unhealthy and should not be eaten D. To convince people to eat „designer‟ eggs and egg substitutes. - 2013 trang: 65

Our demand for water is constantly increasing. Every year there are more and more people in the world. Factories turn out more and more products and need more and more water. We live in a world of water. But almost all of it - about 97% - is in the oceans. This water is too salty to be used for drinking, farming, and manufacturing. Only about 3% of the world's water is fresh. Most of this water is not easily available to man because it is locked in glaciers and icecaps. There is as much water on earth today as there ever was or will ever be. Most of the water we use finds its way to the oceans. There, it is evaporated by the sun. It then falls back to the earth as rain. Water is used and reused over again. It is never used up. Although the world as a whole has plenty of fresh water, some regions have a water shortage. Rain does not fall evenly over the earth. Some regions are always too dry, and others too wet. A region that usually gets enough rain may suddenly have a serious dry spell and another region may be flooded with too much rain. 71. It is commonly believed in the United States that school is where people go to get as education. Nevertheless, it has been said that today children interrupt their education to go to school. The distinction between schooling and education implied by this remark is important. Education is much more open-ended and all-inclusive than schooling. Education knows no bounds. It can take place where, whether in the shower or on the job, whether in a kitchen or on a tractor. It includes both the formal learning that takes place in schools and the whole universe of informal learning. The agents of education can range from a reserved grandparent to the people debating politics on the radio, from a child to a distinguished scientist. Whereas schooling has certain predictability, education quite often produce surprise. A change conversation with a stranger may lead a person to discover how little is known of other religions. - 2013 trang: 71
  • 22. Trung tâm Luyện thi Đại học CLC QSC-45 People are engaged in education from infancy on. Education, then, is a very broad, inclusive term. It is a lifelong process, a process that starts long before the start of school and one that should be an integral part of one‟s entire life. Schooling, on the other hand, is a specific, formalized process, whose general pattern varies little from one setting to the next. Throughout a country, children arrive at school at approximately the same time, take assigned seats, and are taught by an adult, use similar textbook, do homework, take exams, and so on. The slices of reality that are to be learnt, whether they are the alphabet or an understanding of the workings of government, have usually been limited by the boundaries of the subject being taught. For example, high school students know that they are not likely to find out in their class the truth about political problems in their communities or what the newest filmmakers are experimenting with. There are definite conditions surrounding the formalized process of schooling. 76. What does the author probably mean by using the expression “children interrupt their education to go to school”? A. Herman Melville, an American author best known today for his novel Moby Dick, was actually more popular during his lifetime for some of his other works. He traveled extensively and used the knowledge gained during his travels as the basis for his early novels. In 1837, at the age of eighteen, Melville signed as a cabin boy on a merchant ship that was to sail from his Massachusetts home to Liverpool, England. His experiences on this trip served as a basis for the novel Redburn (1849). In 1841, Melville set out on a whaling ship headed for the South Seas. After jumping ship in Tahiti, he wandered around the islands of Tahiti and Moorea. This South Sea island sojourn was a backdrop to the novel Omoo (1847). After three years away from home, Melville joined up with a U.S. naval frigate that was returning to the eastern United States around Cape Horn. The novel White Jacket (1850) describes this lengthy voyage as a navy seaman. - 2013 trang: 74
  • 25. Trung tâm Luyện thi Đại học CLC QSC-45 With the publication of these early adventure novels, Melville developed a strong and loyal following among readers eager for his tales of exotic places and situations. However, in 1851, with the publication of Moby Dick, Melville's popularity started to diminish. Moby Dick, on one level the saga of the hunt for the great white whale, was also a heavily symbolic allegory of the heroic struggle of humanity against the universe. The public was not ready for Melville's literary metamorphosis from romantic adventure to philosophical symbolism. It is ironic that the novel that served to diminish Melville's popularity during his lifetime is the one for which he is best known today. 46. An air pollutant is defined as a compound added directly or indirectly by humans to the atmosphere in such quantities as to affect humans, animals, vegetation, or materials adversely. Air pollution requires a very flexible definition that permits continuous change. When the first air pollution laws were established in England in the fourteenth century, air pollutants were limited to compounds that could be seen or smelled - a far cry from the extensive list of harmful substances known today. As technology has developed and knowledge of the health aspects of various chemicals has increased, the list of air pollutants has lengthened. In the future, even water vapor might be considered an air pollutant under certain conditions. Many of the more important air pollutants, such as sulfur oxides, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides, are found in nature. As the Earth developed, the concentration of these pollutants was altered by various chemical reactions; they became components in biogeochemical cycles. These serve as an air purification scheme by allowing the compounds to move from the air to the water or soil. On a global basis, nature's output of these compounds dwarfs that resulting from human activities. However, human production usually occurs in a localized area, such as a city. In such a region, human output may be dominant and may temporarily overload the natural purification scheme of the cycles. The result is an increased - 2013 trang: 75
  • 26. Trung tâm Luyện thi Đại học CLC QSC-45 concentration of noxious chemicals in the air. The concentrations at which the adverse effects appear will be greater than the concentrations that the pollutants would have in the absence of human activities. The actual concentration need not be large for a substance to be a pollutant; in fact, the numerical value tells us little until we know how much of an increase this represents over the concentration that would occur naturally in the area. For example, sulfur dioxide has detectable health effects at 0.08 parts per million (ppm), which is about 400 times its natural level. Carbon monoxide, however, has a natural level of 0.1 ppm and is not usually a pollutant until its level reaches about 15 ppm. 56. What does the passage mainly discuss? A.
