However, the other major resourcing issue faced by CIO’s is the provision of skilled labour to develop, support and maintain a increasing wide range of IT applications. This session will show attendees how the worldwide pool of freelance developers, the "Crowd", can be utilised as a ubiquitous, metered, unit priced and on demand resource pool to work in the "Cloud" to improve responsiveness to customer demands, reduce development timeframes and achieve significant cost savings. Although the crowd can bring enormous benefits in terms of cost and agility, there are some technical and business barriers to adoption in large organisations. Cisco’s video solutions were historically designed for on-premises dedicated hardware deployments. Typically, major releases occurred annually or bi-annually. The release process lacked the ability to absorb frequent changes and adapt to rapid market trends. This session looks into how Cisco’s IVP Solution team evolved a production system from its monolithic design into a microservices platform, leveraging cloud services, automated deployments, and delivery pipelines. Through this transition the team adopted a biweekly deployment cadence. This ultimately enabled a fast-paced migration to an AWS environment, using AWS services such as Amazon EC2, Amazon RDS, and Amazon Elasticsearch Service.

Après 2 ans à mettre en place des plateformes managées de ce type, nous partagons nos expériences de ce qu’il faut faire pour mettre en œuvre du serverless en entreprise, en évitant les douleurs et en limitant les contraintes au maximum. Tout d’abord l’architecture technique, avec 2 implémentations très différentes : Kubernetes et Helm d’un côté, Clever Cloud on-premise de l’autre. Ensuite, la mise en place et l’utilisation d’OpenFaaS. Comment tester et versionner du Function as a Service. Mais aussi les problématiques de blue/green deployment, de rolling update, d’A/B testing. Comment diagnostiquer rapidement les dépendances et les communications entre services. Enfin, en abordant les sujets chers à la production : * vulnerability management et patch management, * hétérogénéïté du parc, * monitoring et alerting, * gestion des stacks obsolètes, etc.

While everyone is talking about ‘stateless’ services as a way to achieve scalability and high availability, the truth is that they are about as real as the unicorns. Building applications and services that way simply pushes the problem further down the stack, which only makes it worse and more difficult to solve (although, on the upside, it might make it somebody else’s problem). This is painfully obvious when building microservices, where each service must truly own its state. The reality is that you don’t need ‘stateless’ services to either scale out or be fault tolerant — what you really need is a scalable, fault tolerant state management solution that you can build your services around. In this talk we will discuss how some of the popular microservices frameworks are tackling this problem, and will look at technologies available today that make it possible to build scalable, highly available systems without ‘stateless’ service layers, whether you are building microservices or good ol’ monoliths.

But the thing that sets them apart from the previous generation of apps is that they are expected to function flawlessly even while the environment they are running in is constantly changing, or even failing. All of this requires applying a new set of design patterns and practices and this session will introduce the key ones. The Twelve Factor App (12factor.net) is a high-level articulation of some of these techniques that you may well have heard of, but its descriptions are relatively dense and the industry knowledge has evolved a fair bit since its publication. Cornelia Davis will go through the best practices for cloud-native applications and clear some of the mystery that shrouds 12-factor today. At the conclusion, attendees will understand what is needed for cloud-native applications, as well as why and how to deliver on those requirements.

It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
