The pignut hickory is a tree that typically grows 80-90 feet tall with a slender trunk. It has alternate, compound leaves with 5-7 leaflets and produces monoecious flowers in the spring. The fruit is variable in shape but usually pear-shaped, containing a sweet but bitter nut encased in a thick shell. It is distinguished by its smooth twigs and buds that are reddish-brown and smaller than other hickories. The pignut hickory prefers dry upland areas and its range includes parts of north and central Alabama.
