What I Talk About When I Talk About Design: Understanding Form and Function

Hinweis der Redaktion

  1. The first thing I would like to say is that design is probably something quite different from what we usually think. Often, people consider design as pure decoration. In the press and news, design is identified with the artificially produced. It is very unfortunate the common expression ”Design Drugs”. I would like you to think about the following questions.
  2. So what is (good) design? Design is solving problems related to objects and their use. (Example: NIKE SUN GLASSES: They are light. The crystals are easy to change. Its shape is suitable for the user. The cover is easy to hold.) I know, there is a lot of similar Very much cheaper than these glasses in Chinese shops! “As a verb, "to design" also refers to the process of originating and developing a plan for a product, or campaign. An example could be to put ideas and brands on the market. (Example: I LOVE NY logo) Design should serve society. Design and architecture are involved in social progress. Good designs become icons of contemporary culture.
  3. To understand what design is you have to understand what a designer is. They must have great technical skills. Humanistic knowledge is also important. But it must be complemented with a creative spirit and innovative attitude. The designer must surprise and captivate. Our relationship with objects is also emotional. (Example: ALESSI TOOTHPICK CONTAINER) Toothpick becomes a party!
  4. There are many design-related professions. Industrial Design ……….. Graphic Design …………… Others (Packaging, electronic games, Web, exhibitions, typography, etc…)
  5. There is a famous phrase: FORMS FOLLOW FUNCTION. It is a principle associated with the modern design and architecture. But, what function are we talking about? Any product must fulfill several functions The well designed object should work fine. The practical function is the most common, but sometimes It is not the most important. In any case, the shape of the object depends mainly on its use. (Look at this KNIFE it’s perfect to be held in hand. The shape reveals how it should be used.) Some examples of practical function: A sign must be mostly clear.(CERCANIAS LOGO) The first utility of a chair should be theoretically resting on it. (SHAKERS CHAIR)
  6. In a broader sense, we must consider different functions. It all depends on how we use the product. Mankind will always need beauty around them. Designers seek new paths in the beauty of objects Example: (PHILIPE STARK SQUEEZER) actually is not used as a practical object. It has become a sculpture piece.
  7. Finally, we must consider the representative and symbolic meaning of objects. Last but not least, we could think that people know us through the things we use. We all want to be singular. We all prefer certain brands, depending on our personal style. Different products say different things about us. So the designer should consider where the target is.
  8. Backgrounds Crafts Art Nouveau Japan and other cultures There have always been well resolved artifacts. They were refined for generations and were usually anonymous. No one knew the author. (EXAMPLE: SHINAI) Is a stick used in Kendo Martial Art. A group of bamboo sheets tied with a rope, flexible and strong at the same time. The industrial revolution created the need for mass production. In the nineteenth century many emerging movements predicted the birth of design. The Bauhaus school proclaims that a new profession was born: the designer. We still follow the tradition of the famous German school.
  9. The Bauhaus school proclaims that a new profession was born: the designer. We still follow the tradition of the famous German school.
  10. Electronic devices and interfaces One of the most exciting challenges for designers is to improve the use of new devices coming onto the market. How can we improve the use of an electronic book? How will users employ the new computers in the future? New needs, new metaphors Years ago, the objects lasted decades. The appliances were repaired. Now, we throw the old equipment. That makes it easy to create a personal design, with thousands of variants for the same object. (Examples: SWATCH WATCHES, SMART CARS)
  11. I would like to conclude my talk by showing this slide. The designer is angry because his products are sold too cheap. The Elite designers are against IKEA. I want to show here a fantastic and sophisticated example of the new design and new advertising. IKEA, the paradigm of democratic design, laughs at itself. Two key element of modern design are humor and irony.
