Reading Enrichment Unit <br />Unit Title:  Greek Mythology meets Modern Day <br />Subject:  EnglishGrades: 3-5<br />Learner Analysis: This unit will focus on students in grades 3-5 since the book The Lightning Thief is written at an advanced level and its content is advanced.  The elementary school has included the media center as part of its rotation, so the media specialist will be able to use the rotation to share the beginning of the book with the group of students as well as an overview of the gods and goddesses who play a role in the book. <br />Stage 1 – Desired Results <br />Established Goal(s):<br />21st Century Learner Standards:<br />4.1.1 Read, view, and listen for pleasure and personal growth.<br />4.1 5 Connect ideas to own interests and previous knowledge and experience.<br />4.1.7 Use social networks and information tools to gather and share information. <br />4.3.1. Participate in the social exchange of ideas, both electronically and in person. <br />Georgia Performance Standards: <br />ELA3R3 The student uses a variety of strategies to gain meaning from grade-level text. The student <br />a. Reads a variety of texts for information and pleasure. <br />b. Makes predictions from text content. <br />ELA3W2 The student produces a response to literature that: <br />a. Captures a reader’s interest by developing a point of view. <br />b. Demonstrates understanding of the text, formulates an opinion, and supports a judgment. <br />c. The media specialist will ask if anyone has seen the movie.  Next, she will ask, “What is the difference between watching the movie and reading the book?”  This conversation will prompt a conversation about being able to see your own pictures of the characters and setting.  The media specialist will introduce the book by asking the students if anyone knows anything about Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, or Athena.  She will then explain how these gods and goddesses from ancient Rome play a key role in the quest of Percy Jackson as well as the tests and obstacles he must overcome in order to be deemed a hero. <br />Explore, Experience and Equip<br />Learning Activities:<br />,[object Object]
The media specialist will also have a graphic organizer that demonstrates a typical hero cycle.
The media specialist will read the first chapter of The Lightning Thief to the students, stopping to discuss what they think is going on as Percy Jackson introduces himself.  Students will also be asked why they think the chapter is entitled “I Accidentally Vaporize My Pre-Algebra Teacher” and if that titles motivates them to want to continue reading.

Reading enrichment unit

  • 1.
  • 2. The media specialist will also have a graphic organizer that demonstrates a typical hero cycle.
  • 3. The media specialist will read the first chapter of The Lightning Thief to the students, stopping to discuss what they think is going on as Percy Jackson introduces himself. Students will also be asked why they think the chapter is entitled “I Accidentally Vaporize My Pre-Algebra Teacher” and if that titles motivates them to want to continue reading.
  • 4. After completing chapter 1, students will discuss what appeals to them about how Percy tells his story. The media center specialist will ask the students what they think happened that makes Percy feel the way he does at the end of the first chapter.
  • 5. Students will continue to read independently and post to the blog HalfBlood.blog.blogspot.com weekly until they are scheduled to come back into the media center and discuss the book as a group again.
  • 6. The challenge will be to be a true half blood and complete the book by a specific date and continue reading the other four books in the series.
