Focus on the heart
February is American Heart Month, and
according to the Centers for Disease Control
(CDC), heart disease is the leading cause of
death for both men and women.
PERSONAL TRAINER
Staying active and exercising can keep your
heart (as well as your body) healthy. Research
is showing that a combination of cardiovascular
exercise and strength training is ideal. Visit the
club, and learn what classes and services are
available.
The CDC also list these helpful tips on its
website (http://www.cdc.gov/features/
AWARD
heartmonth/ ) for staying heart healthy and
keeping up a fitness program:
• Don’t become overwhelmed.
• Don’t go it alone. Exercising with a friend is a
great way to stick to your program.
• Don’t get discouraged.
• Reward yourself. Find fun things to do to
LIFE STORY
decrease your stress.
• Eat a healthy diet.
• Maintain a healthy weight.
• Exercise regularly.
• Monitor your blood pressure.
• Don’t smoke.
PERSONAL CARE
• Limit alcohol use.
• Have your cholesterol checked.
• Manage your diabetes.
• Take your medicine.
This month, as we focus on heart health, it is
also helpful to remember the signs of a heart
attack. The CDC states that the five major
symptoms of a heart attack are:
• Pain or discomfort in the jaw, neck, or back.
• Feeling weak, light-headed, or faint.
• Chest pain or discomfort.
• Pain or discomfort in arms or shoulder.
•Shortness of breath.
• If you think that you or someone you know is
having a heart attack, call 911 immediately.
