Lifting spirits: Bra art raises
support and hope
Each year, the Fargo community
creates fun bra-inspired art
to raise funds and support
for breast cancer research
and awareness. The local
organization Bras on Broadway.
works with local artists who
donate their creations for
auction. The funds support the
American Cancer Society, and
Bras on Broadway also provides
much-needed accommodations,
gas cards, and wigs for those in
need.
Residents also decorated bras,
which joined the thousands
hanging from the historic
downtown Hotel Donalson
(HoDo) on Broadway. Karen
Stoker, owner of HoDo and
Touchmark volunteer, invited
the resident artists to HoDo for
treats and to see the towering
bra-art display. Resident Ray
Green even came up with a song
for this yearly event:

bras that hang on Broadway.
They’re black, they’re pink,
they’re red, white & blue
In this rainbow exhibition,
HoDo is the place to carry on

Senior of the Year

was recently recognized with the
Senior of the Year award. This
annual recognition coordinated by
Bethany Retirement Living honors
the contributions made by seniors
to the fabric of the community in
five categories: business, community
involvement, education/arts, faith
and health/wellness.

Don’s former employee, friend
and fellow Touchmark resident
Mary Nelson nominated him
in the business category for his
contribution as the owner of the
West Fargo Pioneer, a weekly
newspaper Don and his wife Betty
started in 1967.
“I’m quite honored and
complimented,” Witham says of the
recognition.
Don’s development of the West
Fargo Pioneer was instrumental
for two reasons. First, he proved
anything is possible. He and Betty
ventured into the newspaper
business with little newspaper
experience, many – including the
previous owner - predicted he’d fail.
But he and Betty, along with their
dedicated employees, worked side by
side to make it happen.
“Betty worked right with me. She
did layout and design, and I sold
advertising. Together we, along with
the help of our employees, built

300-square-foot-building on Main Street and just continued
to grow.”
Under Don and Betty’s guidance, the West Fargo Pioneer
and its sister publication The Midweek grew to reach a
weekly distribution of 65,000 households before they sold it
to Forum Communications in 2005. Don also owned Davon
Press.
Don credits teamwork for the success of his business. “We
worked for our employees, and they worked for us. Our
whole corporation operated that way. I worked right along
with them, and we had no problem. We worked for each
other and had a ball in the meantime.”
Don reflects on the fun they had at work by recounting their
office birthdays. “We had a big celebration for everyone
who had a birthday. We’d meet in the kitchen, and I’d lead
everyone in a ‘Hip-hip-hooray.’ Then I’d jump and click my
heels,” Don recalls with a laugh.
Aside from proving anything is possible, Don’s nurturing
of the West Fargo Pioneer was instrumental for the city
by helping distinguish it as a separate community from
Fargo. “When we started the Pioneer, it was something
that identified West Fargo, and West Fargo had never been
identified before—its paper was just an extension of The
Forum. When we created the Pioneer, the Pioneer was West
Fargo, and The Forum was Fargo.”
“West Fargo is really something special, because West Fargo
helped me, and I helped West Fargo,” Don says.
In addition to being a former business owner, Don also is
an author of two books. One is a compilation of columns
he wrote for the West Fargo Pioneer over the course of
20 years. His second book chronicles his experiences in
World War II. During his time in the service—four years,
one month, and 11 days to be exact—Don survived four
invasions, being torpedoed, and floating on a life raft.
Don Witham has indeed experienced a full life!

year’s conference was Louie
Anderson,” says Mark. “Louie
is a well-known comedian and
a Minnesota native, and he
shared that this past summer,
after participating in the TV
show Splash, he realized that
he needed to take control of his
health. It was an inspiring and
informative conference.”
