12. Mobile learning and statistics The CEO of Ericsson, Carl-Heinric Sandberg, announced a short time ago that the number of mobile subscriptions in the world had reached 3.300.000.000. This is for a world population of about 6.5 billion. This means there is a wireless device for every 2 persons in the world, including all ages, the poorest and also developing countries.
13. Mobile learning and distance education Technology: There is an old truth in distance education research which states that ‘it is not technologies with inherent pedagogical qualities that triumph in distance education but technologies which are generally available to citizens’. If this is true there has never been a technology as available to citizens as mobile telephony. The figure is now 3.3 billion and rising rapidly. Distance education cannot disregard mobile technologies.
