Caring for Your Floors in Every Season
Every season brings new dangers for your floors, which can make it hard for you to
keep them clean and in good condition. Carpet, hardwood, tile and all kinds of floors
are prone to damage all year, but when you know how to care for them, no matter what
the seasons bring, you can keep your floors in excellent condition.
When you maintain your floors all year, you can also avoid major stains and damages
that are expensive and difficult to repair. The best way to take care of your floors is to
form some habits and take certain steps all year long.
Spring
With new flowers, plants, rain and spring weather
comes water and mud, two of the worst things for
your carpet. While you may not be able to control the
mud outside your home, you can control it inside.
One of the easiest ways to prevent mud from entering
your home and ruining your carpet is to place
doormats outside every door and rugs inside every
door. Ask people to wipe their feet and have your
family, especially kids, take their shoes off before they
come inside.
You can make this easy by setting up a station next to your door where it’s convenient
for people to take their shoes off. Put a chair in the entryway and even add a shoe rack
to avoid clutter. You can add a table for mail, keys and bags and add artwork and other
accessories to design the space and make it blend in with the rest of your home.
The spring is also the perfect time to hire a carpet cleaner to give your carpets a good,
deep clean. When you use a carpet cleaner, you can rid the carpet of all the dust, dirt
and even mud that has worked its way deep down into your carpets over the winter.
Summer
It can be easier to take care of your floors
during the summer because the warm
weather means sandals, which are easy to
slip off when you walk inside the door.
Keep up the habit of taking your shoes off
inside by using the organisation system
you put in place during the spring.
You cleaned your carpets in the spring, so
now is a good time to give your
hardwood, tile or linoleum floors a good
clean. Spot clean your floors as needed and use a mop regularly to keep them looking
good. Then, use a floor scrubber on tile floors to make them shine and look like new.
Hardwood floors require special care. You can sweep them throughout the year to keep
them clean but during the summer, you’ll need to do a more thorough clean.
To do this, use a cleaning product that is labeled safe for hardwood floors, immerse the
mop in it, and then wring it out. To prevent water damage, you should use a mop that
is only slightly damp, so make sure you wring most of the water out of it.
Then, mop the hardwood just like you would any other floor, but be careful not to
create puddles of standing water. After you have mopped the entire floor, use a dry
towel to wipe up excess water and then set up a fan to help the floor dry quickly.
Standing water can damage your floor, especially if it is a humid day.
Fall
Use the fall to make repairs to your floor to
keep them looking their best. The type of
repairs you make will depend on the kind of
floors you have. If you have tile floors, you can
replace broken tiles very easily.
First, surround the broken tile with painter’s
tape and use a drill to very carefully make a
few small holes into the tile. Do not drill deep
enough to damage the floorboards beneath the tile. Then, use a chisel to carefully
remove the broken pieces. Replace the tile using adhesive and grout. Scratches in
hardwood floors are also easy to repair. Start by lightly sanding scratched areas and
then rubbing mineral spirits into the damaged spots. Then, fill the scratches with filler
and when it is dry, sand it to make it smooth and level with the rest of the floor. Finish
the area with a hardwood floor sealer. It’s also a good idea to hire a carpet cleaner again
in the fall. You need to deep clean your carpets regularly, and now, after summer dirt
and pollen have landed on your carpet, is a good time to do it.
Winter
During the winter, you can complete
floor maintenance projects that are
needed to keep floors looking their best.
Things like cleaning and repairs need to
be done often, but once a year or so,
you’ll have to take some extra
maintenance steps, depending on the
types of floors you have.
For tile floors, you’ll need to repair the grout. If there are areas where the grout has
become loose or even worn away, use matching grout to fill the spaces in. If there is
loose grout, use a chisel to carefully remove it. Then, wipe the area clean to remove dust
and broken grout before you apply new grout.
Wood floors need to be resealed so they will stay in top condition. First, use a floor
sander to lightly sand the surface. As you do this, just work to sand the finish, not the
wood itself. Then, use a cleaning product that is safe for hardwood floors to clean the
floor well and remove all the dust from sanding. When the floor is clean and dry, use a
sealer, or polyurethane, depending on the finish that is already on your floor, to reseal
it. Follow the directions that came with the product to make sure you use it correctly.
When you adopt some maintenance and cleaning habits all year you can avoid damage
and keep your floors looking their best. The processes you use will depend on the type
of floors you have, but these seasonal tips can help you start a floor-care routine that
will make your floors look like new all year.
