and the protests and
clashes which followed
his self-immolation
were initially largely
overlooked by
international media.
Much of the

16. We hacked a new use for an app called
curated.by
Allowed users to curate tweets and add
them to “bundles”
Curation could be done as an individual or

19. Needed a simple way to indicate a tweet
was a translation so we used: #AREN (later
#Ar2En) & #ENAR (later #En2Ar)
This let people know we were translating
AND created a useful feed of translated
content (as a #hashtag)

Hinweis der Redaktion
Start by explaining why I think translation of social media is important, going to borrow some ideas
Director of MIT Media Lab, gives a great TED talk in 2010. ”The infrastructures of a globalized world lead us to believe that we’re living in a flat, Friedmanesque world.”
Note English speaking countries consume more media from one another
Technoliberalism, rose-tinted view of internet and “democratization”
Twitter has 550 million users. Multilingual space – majority of English content ended in 2009
Twitter a different space in different languages.
Machine Translation limited but communicative for web content. Generally horrible for social media.
