1. Merchiston Publishing are relaunching forgotten
sci-fi classic A Voyage to Arcturus by Scottish
writer David Lindsay. A Voyage to Arcturus follows
one man’s intergalactic journey through space, a
sprawling pilgrimage where interactions with alien
lifeforms lead to philosophical questions of morality,
faith, life, death, gender relations, and what it means
to be human.
Originally published in 1920 A Voyage to Arcturus was
unsuccessful in its time, selling less than six hundred
copies. However, he now has some prominent fans,
with C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien citing A Voyage to
Arcturus as an influence on their fantasy works. Some
critics now see Lindsay’s brand of metaphysical science
fiction as the missing link between prominent Scottish
writers George Macdonald and Alasdair Gray.
In May 2016 we are launching a hard-back, limited
edition version of this epic novel to allow it the
recognition it deserves. With additional content by
Scottish sci-fi writer Gary Gibson and Alan Moore,
writer of world famous graphic novels, V for Vendetta
and Watchmen (and no.1 AVTA fan). Alongside our
limited edition hardback we will be launching a free
e-book to celebrate this novel with a global market to
share the success of this largely unknown Scottish sci-fi
writer.
