2. A Brief Introduction to Triathlons
With origins in the early 20th century, the triathlon is a multisport
competitive endurance contest consisting of swimming, cycling, and
running events performed back-to-back. Modern triathlons measure
in several different distance categories ranging from relatively short
sprints to long Ironman events. The following list covers some of the
basic requirements for each triathlon category.

1. Swimming: This event can take place in a pool or open water with
distances ranging from 0.5 to 2.4 miles.

2. Cycling: Immediately following the swimming event, athletes
begin the cycling phase of the triathlon. This event ranges from 12.4
to 112 miles.

3. Running: After completing the cycling phase, athletes transition
directly into the running event, a traditional foot race ranging from
3.1 miles to a full marathon of 26.2 miles.

Bernier has competed in a number of events, including the 2011 Life
Time Chicago Triathlon, the 2011 Tri-Shark Triathlon, and 2010 Ford
Ironman Wisconsin.
