Turn to person Shake hand Call and response Me – who I am. WISER, WISERBridge Co-Founder, Current Job
One facet of development = education; selfishly want all of you to pursue careers in education What ed means to me UN officials may argue that their cause is the greatest – I disagree
How this directly relates to what you talk about in Model UN – development goals #1 goal for me – Universal Primary Ed
Why I joined an organization in Muhuru Bay, Kenya called WISER Secondary School (high school) for girls
Southwest corner of Kenya, on the banks of Lake Victoria – if anyone seen Darwin’s Nightmare, know a bit more about the fishing industry around Lake Victoria Basically – impoverished, not water, no electricity
Girls – return to village and help it develop, boys stay in the cities and start families there
Carrying for siblings/children Not a priority for schooling Burden of physical labor
A voice for women, the ability for women to add to community development
As mentioned, goal of UN = Universal Primary Education Some stats in Muhuru Bay
We thought to ourselves – need a program to link primary school to high school So this is my little joke of one of the names were thinking about
Instead – WISERBridge Going to give a quick video that is from 2009 that gives a little more background as to what WISERBridge is, and if you’re a visual person like me, what it’s like to live in a rural African village like Muhuru Bay
Purple = Before WB Yellow = Actual exam results 2009 = 29% passing 2010 = 48% passing
So many more kids expected! More kids in high school!
Kids pay Teachers chronically absent Poor teaching quality Power of incentives – pay for performance, bonuses, student bonuses WB still changing today… Must must keep adjusting course, nothing is static in educational dvmt
When people given opportunity – they flourish. Make connection to microfinance All community leaders, cannot manage from US – must do it there MESSY! Have to deal with all issues of dvmt in order to grow (ex: girls’ group) School businesses
