Linking Social Change and Developmental Change: Shifting Pathways of Human Development Patricia M. Greenfield University of California, Los Angeles P. M. Greenfield’s new theory of social change and human development aims to show how changing sociodemographic ecologies alter cultural values and learning environments and thereby shift developmental pathways. Worldwide sociodemographic trends include movement from rural residence, informal education at home, subsistence economy, and low-technology environments to urban residence, formal schooling, commerce, and high-technology environments. The former ecology is summarized by the German term Gemeinschaft (“community”) and the latter by the German term Gesellschaft (“society”; Tönnies, 1887/1957). A review of empirical research dem- onstrates that, through adaptive processes, movement of any ecological variable in a Gesellschaft direction shifts cultural values in an individualistic direction and developmental pathways toward more independent social behavior and more abstract cognition—to give a few examples of the myriad behaviors that respond to these sociodemographic changes. In contrast, the (much less frequent) movement of any ecological variable in a Gemeinschaft direction is predicted to move cultural values and developmental pathways in the opposite direction. In conclusion, sociocultural environments are not static either in the developed or the developing world and therefore must be treated dynamically in developmental research. Keywords: social change, culture, cognitive development, social development, learning The goal in this article is to develop a theory that links social change with developmental change. It therefore deals simulta- neously with two scales of development: change within a lifetime and change across succeeding generations. In the field of developmental psychology, one normally thinks of developmental tra- jectories as a constant across historical time. Indeed, a theoretical problem is that theory and research in cultural psychology, includ- ing cultural developmental psychology, assume that cultures are static rather than dynamic. This article, in contrast, presents a theory that, paradoxically, sees change in developmental trajec- tories as the constant. A major goal of the theory of social change and human development is to explain how, as sociodemographic conditions change, cultural values and developmental patterns are transformed across generations. Because sociodemographic conditions are changing throughout the world—in the direction of greater urbanization, higher levels of formal schooling, increasing commercialization, and ever higher levels of technology—the influence of social change on developmental patterns is an important domain in which theory is needed to guide empirical research and to understand children and youths in the United States and around the world. BIAS AND EQUIVALENCE In designing and evaluating cross-cultural research, no concepts are more important than equivalenceand bias. Bias refers to differences that do not have exactly the same meaning within and across cultures. Equivalence is a state or condition of similarity in conceptual meaning and empirical method between cultures that allows comparisons to be meaningful. These constructs go hand in hand; bias refers to a state of non-equivalence, and equivalence refers to a state of no bias. In its strictest sense, if there is any bias in any aspect of a cross-cultural comparative study, then the comparison loses its meaning (and may in fact be meaningless). Bias (or lack of equivalence) in a cross-cultural study creates the proverbial situation of comparing apples and oranges. Only if the theoretical framework and hypotheses have equivalent meaning in the cultures being compared—and if the methods of data collection, management, and analysis have equivalent meaning—will the results from that comparison be meaningful. Apples in one culture can be compared only to apples in another. Thus it’s important for cross-cultural researchers to understand the many aspects of their studies that may be culturally biased and work to establish equivalence in them. Below we discuss five major areas of bias: conceptual bias, method bias, measurement bias, response bias, and interpretational bias. Conceptual Bias A major concern of cross-cultural research is the equivalence in meaning of the overall theoretical framework being tested and the specific hypotheses being addressed in the first place. If these are not equivalent across the cultures participating in the study, then the data obtained from them are not comparable because they mean different things. If, however, the theoretical framework and hypotheses are equivalent across the participating cultures, the study may be meaningful and relevant. For example, people trained to do research in the United States or Europe may be bound by a sense of “logical determinism” and “rationality” that is characteristic of such formal and systematic educational systems. In addition, because we are so used to drawing two-dimensional theories of behavior on paper, that medium affects the way we think about people and psychology. People of other cultures who have not been exposed to such an educational system or who are not used to reducing their thoughts about the world onto a two-dimensional space may not think in the same way. If this is the case, then a real question arises as to whether a theory created within a Western European or American cultural framework is meaningful in the same way to people who do not share that culture. If the theory is not meaningful in the same way, then it is not equivalent. Many of the differences in employee motivation, management styles, and organizational structures of companies throughout the world can be traced to differences in the collective mental programming of people in different national cultures. Motivation, Leadership, and Organization: Do American Theories Apply Abroad? Geert Hofstede well-known experiment used in organizational behavior courses involves showing the class an ambiguous picture—one that can be interpreted in two different ways. One such picture represents either an attractive young girl or an ugly old woman, depending on the way you look at it. Some of my colleagues and I use the experiment, which demon- strates how different people in the same situation may perceive quite different things. We start by asking half of the class to close their eyes while we show the other half a slightly altered version of the picture—one in which only the young girl can be seen—for only five seconds. Then we ask those who just saw the young girl's picture to close their eyes while we give the other half of the class a five-second look at a version in which only the old woman can be seen. After this preparation we show the ambiguous picture to everyone at the same time. The results are amazing—most of those "conditioned" by seeing the young girl first see only the young girl in the ambiguous 42 Organizational Dynamics, Surfimer 1980. © 1980, AMACOM, a division of American Munagement Associations. We then ask one of those who perceive the old woman to explain to one of those who perceive the young girl what he or she sees, and vice versa, until everyone finally sees both images in the picture. Each group usually finds it very difficult to get its views across to the other one and sometimes there's considerable irritation at how "stupid" the other group is. CULTURAL CONDITIONING I use this experiment to introduce a discussion on cultural conditioning. Basically, it shows that in five seconds 1 can condition half a class to see something different from what the other half sees. If this is so in the simple classroom situation, how much stronger should differences in perception of the same reality be between people who have been conditioned by different education and life experience—not for five seconds, but for twenty, thirty, or forty years? I define culture as the collective mental programming of the people in an environment. Culture is not a characteristic of individuals; it encompasses a number of people who were conditioned by the same education and life experience. When we speak of the culture of a group, a tribe, a geographical region, a national minority, or a nation, culture refers to the collective mental programming that these people have in common; the programming that is different from that of other groups, tribes, regions, minor.

The range of social scientific methods has also expanded. Social researchers draw upon a variety of qualitative and quantitative techniques. The linguistic and cultural turns of the mid-twentieth century led to increasingly interpretative, hermeneutic, and philosophic approaches to the analysis of society. Conversely, recent decades have seen the rise of new analytically, mathematically and computationally rigorous techniques, such as agent- based modelling and social network analysis. Sociology should not be confused with various general social studies courses which bear little relation to sociological theory or social science research methodology.
