Upian creates web documentaries that are designed specifically for online viewing and participation. They discuss two of their projects: Gaza Sderot and Prison Valley. Gaza Sderot documented life on both sides of the Gaza/Israel border and was very popular, receiving over 500,000 unique visitors. Prison Valley examines a town with many prisons in Colorado and incorporates interactivity, allowing users to communicate with characters. It was released online, as a TV documentary, iPhone app, book, and photo exhibition. Both projects aimed to have nonlinear stories and maximize participation through social networks and online discussion forums.

Very important. Our productions consider Internet as First Plateform. All of them. So no matter if some of our programs are broadcasted later o,n TV all our projects are broadcasted first on the internet.  3) That the project is planned foremost to be published on the web. 4) That the project would not be possible without the web. 5) The project can only function on the web and has to speak the language of the web. BUT of course the project can later on function on different platforms. Of course the stories can be modified or translated according to the media theyâre used on : (short story, long documentary) or on different Platforms (mobile phones, theatre, radio, installations etcâŠ) 6) The project has ongoing, continuous/non static nature. 7) That the project is changing on the web all the time. 8) That the stories are on-going on the web 9) That the interactivity continues story lines and changes the project on the web. 10) That the project can have long/permanent lifespan. The project is based on short form of storytelling 11) the project is based on clear kernel stories, to whom the first form Is short and mostly with a strong personal approach and that the form can be a story told: a) by a person in front of camera b) in a form of a short documentary c) in a form of dialogue of two persons communicating with each others d) in a form of videos sent by anyone e) in a form of video blogs f) in an another form, that is_______________  Something I want to had about the budget : The project has to be realistic and ambitious at the same time 1. It has to have a clear and realistic finance strategy 2. It has to be by nature something that does not need exceptional capabilities 3. It has to be ambitious by content and form 4. It has to have strong interactive element, even anarchist by nature 5. It has to be capable to use and interest the existing social networks // Authors are integrated in the workflow, initiating a parallel creation : story / investigation ï material webdesign / usability ï user experience Design fits the content Again, this is something very specific here. But it is true that everytime we worked on a webdocumentary, we were able to have the authors sitting with us and completely re-thinking their idea of the story, and what their work would look like in the end. Once that is done, for the next weeks / months, we work very closely with them : they make the story, we use it to build the user experience. Â
THE TOPIC PROJECT DESCRIPTION Backbone of the program is a very cinematographic stand-alone narrative. At different points of the narrative, the user is offered access to different interactive «zones». Each zone offers a different experience: debates, discoveries, complements. Once a zone is visited, the user continues the story where he left it upon entering.  Prison Valley is a road movie. The internet user will be driving the U.S. conditioned nightmare, a total trip, intimate immersion, with its choices, forks, its truths. And he will meet the different characters as he progresses through the story. For the Internet User, one place will be of high importance: the Riviera Motel. The Riviera Motel is the starting point of the story. And the starting point of the web userâs journey through Prison Valley. A place used as a base camp. He will be able to register (login), access the different parts of the webdocumentary, explore bonuses and objects, receive instructions to continue the trip and notifications, contact the characters he encountered in the documentary, etc. The motel has a real meaning in the existence in the city, he is not cover-ups of the website navigation. On prisonvalley.com, story and navigation are fully blending into one another. We want to mix the intimacy of the story and user experience. The confusion is complete, the viewer finds himself fully at the core of the film. FEEL AND MEET THE OTHERS  The website will feature: â Free discussionsâ (direct discussions between viewers and characters) Inter-users discussions on specific topics Live chats with protagonists from the justice branch (ministers, lawyers, activists, former prisoners, etc). Guests also play a role in the program. In each country, the broadcaster can invite a local expert Discussions with authors and protagonists of the program (at all times whenever they are present in the program, they are identifiable) Reactions to different sound portfolios offered by emotional keywords Reactions in video to this question: in your opinion, where does fear come from?  Prison Valley, the first documentary carrying its own tools of discussion within. * Prison Valley is a collective adventure that started in december 2008 It is a photo-video investigation and a litterary road movie at the same time. It is a hybride production, a cross over between 3 approaches : the photoreportage (Philippe Brault), the documentary (David Dufresne) and the webdesign (Upian). In its webform, Prison Valley will offer diverse narrative experiences, as there will be mutliple layers to the story telling : Linear stand alone story Crossings : video bonuses, text complements, stats, biographies Once logged into the movie, the user is immersed in the shoes of the authors (motel room, movie theater, and so on : without really knowing it, the user is following the steps of the authors). Exlusive Interactivity : the user can talk to the caracter of the movie. Everybody is playing a part in this project : authors, producers, but also caracters of the movie and the web user. Classic interactivity : forums, chat Items borrowed from the video game universe : rooms system, number of user connected, Emotional interactivity : the question of fear, the emotional portfolios. The user is invited to reflect on what he is seeing and to express is emotions. Some of the texts hidden in the site tell the story of the making off : another layer of experience. The main idea : technology allows the object webdocumentary to carry within itself the means of the discussion it is supposed to initiate. Freedom of writing and imagination, powered by the system of a single story interrupted by interactive pauses. By this brings constraints : how do we avoid becoming boring ? Confusing ? how do we keep focused on the storytelling ? Thatâs where we invented the timeline. The web is flexible : until the very last minutes, we can add new informations, email interviews, video testimonies. The webdocumentary is very adaptative. Internet is the first actor of the storytelling : Long form : 59 mn Web broadcast before tv broadcast Written focusing primarily on the web Original sound design similar in many ways to the video game sound design. The whole thing was shot after having been storyboarded : we had to produce a lot extra images (for the motel room, for the rooms, the portraits) Prison Valley will also be a TV documentary and a book (published in autumn).  What else can i say ? New form of writing, new horizons, new partnerships.
