The document provides tips for building a career in the space industry. It recommends joining space organizations like SGAC early to build a network, finding a mentor, and attending space events. It notes space careers exist beyond engineering, such as space law, medicine, and art. The summary also suggests getting involved in space activities like hackathons, volunteering with NGOs, public speaking, and analogue missions to gain experience. Website links are provided for various space organizations, events, incubators, and do-it-yourself space projects.

2. My career observations
• It matters less WHAT diplomas you have, as long as you have them
• Your future job probably does not yet EXIST while you are in school
• Knowledge from your education LOSES 30% of its use every year
• It’s NEVER too late to change a career that doesn’t make you happy
• FUN is the most underrated career objective
• Your career should be about what makes you HAPPY
• If you do what you love, you WON’T WORK a single day in your life
• The magic happens outside your comfort zone – just DO IT
3. My career in space:
• I came for the rockets, I stayed for the PEOPLE
• Space is all about PASSION (less about money)
• Space is one of the most INTERNATIONAL and interdisciplinary
industries in the world
• Space is NOT (just) rocket science
• Space will need THOUSANDS of new people in the next decade
• Space needs people from ALL backgrounds and countries
• Becoming active in space is EASIER than you may think
• Space is a very competitive industry, but:
•There is a place in space for EVERYONE

16. Space career tips (Summary 1/2)
• 1 - Build a space network early:
Join and be active at SEDS, SGAC (Space Generation Advisory Council), Women in Aerospace, etc.
• 2 - Get in touch with space workers, find a mentor:
Lots of nice people who want to talk to you. Find your mentor! Ask people at SGAC, your national
space society, UNOOSA Space4Women network, people you meet at webinars, etc.
• 3 - The number of countries active in space is growing:
No space organisations in your country? Help build them! Examples: Project Irazu (Costa Rica),
ESTCube (Estonia), MIR-Sat1 (Mauritius)
• 4 - Not good at maths? Not a problem, space is very interdisciplinary:
Space Law, Space/STEM communications, Space Data Science, Space Medicine, Space Art, Space
Architecture, etc.
• 5 - Attend space events near you (webinars!):
See spaceagenda.com for everything going on. Why not organise your own webinar?
• 6 - Transitioning from another industry?
Go back to school and combine your experience with new space knowledge!
The International Space University (ISU) did it for me: www.isunet.edu
17. Space career tips (Summary 2/2)
• 7 - Hackathons are a great entry point for non-space professionals:
See Copernicus Hackathons, NASA Space Apps Challenge, Act In Space, COVID Challenges, ESA Space
App Camp
• 8 - Have your own idea for a new business in space?
There is a LOT of support at space incubators (e.g. ESA BIC, Copernicus Incubation) and through
competitions (e.g. Copernicus/Galileo Masters)
• 9 - Volunteer in Space and STEM organisations – Make your CV a SPACE CV:
World Space Week, BIS, Space Society, SpaceUp, STEM Ambassadors, SEDS, SGAC, Solar System
Ambassadors, model rocketry clubs, astronomy clubs
• 10 - Build confidence while encouraging others:
Do space talks at your local schools and youth clubs, write blogs for space websites
• 11 - Want to be an astronaut but don’t want to wait to be accepted or go
through 10 years of training? Become an analogue astronaut!
Check out the Austrian Space Forum, the Mars Society MDRS (Mars Desert Research Station), D-MARS
(Desert Mars Analog Ramon Station), Lunares, Habitat Marte, etc.
